Mother’s Day is More than Just Gift Giving

Wednesday, April 27th, 2005 by David

Mother’s day is right around the corner - May 8th - and as everyone scrambles to find Mom that perfect gift don’t forget to think about the real reason we celebrate Mother’s Day.

The roots of Mother’s Day go back to the ancient festivals dedicated to mother goddess. In the ancient Greek empire, Rhea, the wife of Cronus, and mother of the Gods and Goddesses, was worshipped and honored at this time every year in a spring celebration. In Rome too, Cybele, a mother Goddess, was worshipped, as early as 250 BC. It was known as Hilaria, and it lasted for three days, called the Ides of March, that is from March 15 to March 18. In more recent times, during the 1600s, England observed “Mothering Sunday”, or the “Mid-Lent-Sunday, on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It was quite identical to the modern-day celebrations.

You can get the full history behind Mother’s Day here, here, and here, but that is not really what I mean by thinking about the real reason we celebrate Mother’s Day.

So what do I mean? I mean we should take the time to thank our moms for the small things they have done for us all our life. Washing our clothes, driving us to practice, cutting the crust off our PB&J’s, making our skinned knees better with a kiss. All those things they have done for us our whole lives.

Giving Mom a gift is a great way to show her appreciation for everything she has done, but to make the day special for her tell her how much you appreciated that time when you were 11 years old and she left work to pick you up from school because you were not feeling well. I guarantee that will make her eyes light up brighter than any present would have.

Cinco de Mayo

Sunday, April 24th, 2005 by David

The fifth of May celebration is often thought to be the Mexican Independence day. Not true, you can find the real reason Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo here.

Now that we all know why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, let’s talk about how to celebrate it!

I like to sit back and have a few beers and margaritas with friends. My beer of choice that day is usually Corona, Dos Equis, or Tecate.

If you would rather have a margarita, here is a great recipe:

  • 1½ oz Tequila
  • ¾ oz Triple Sec (or Cointreau)
  • Splash of Sour Mix & a dash of Lime Juice

Shake with ice & serve in a salt rimmed glass on the rocks or strain to serve up
Add more liquid and blend with ice for a frozen variation
Garnish with a lime wedge

If you prefer frozen margaritas, I recommend one of our blenders.

No matter how you celebrate, be sure to be safe!

Great Beer Bar in Philadelphia Airport

Thursday, April 21st, 2005 by David

With increased security and exorbitant cost of beers in an airport I would not recommend making a special trip to the Philly airport, but if you are there waiting for a flight, go to Jet Rock

Why? Because Jet Rock has 48 beers on tap. And I am not talking about Budweiser every way, they had Grolsh, John Courage, Bass, Guinness. All the good stuff.

If you are getting ready for Cinco de Mayo, check out our Corona Bar Signs, they are on sale!

Virtual Bartender

Friday, April 15th, 2005 by David

Beer.com has released their second installment of the “Virtual Bartender.” The first Virtual Bartender was Tammy and she would do the normal bartender stuff like get you a beer, etc. And also some of the stuff you wish a bartender would do.

Now, there are two Virtual Bartenders! That’s right, twice the service, so be sure to tip well. Some interesting requests are to ask for a beer, ask them to dance, even ask them to fight! What else can you get them to do?

Thanks to Beer Bytes for noticing the new Bartenders!

Did the Masters get you in the Mood to Golf?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2005 by David

Wow! What a finish. I golfed earlier that day and got to finish my Sunday golf experience off watching Tiger Woods and Chris DiMarco battle into a playoff!

Man, I wish I had half the skill those guys do. Unfortunately I don’t, so when I hit the links I like to balance my game out by drinking a few beers. Buying beers on the course is expensive! Most courses don’t let you bring your Coleman cooler full of beer and toss it in the cart basket. They know they’ve got’cha and are not afraid to charge you $3.50 for a can of beer. Maybe if you buy a six pack they will knock $2 off the cost, but that is still pretty expensive.

I found away around it with this Bag Boy Cart Bag! It has a 12-pack cooler built in. Sweet! It works great too, I used it this weekend and it kept everything nice and cold.

I didn’t shoot to well, but at least I didn’t get beat up by cart girl prices!

Championship Monday

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005 by David

After Saturday’s games we are now down to the final game of the NCAA Championship Tournament. More importantly, we have a match-up of two Amber beers in our Beer March Madness game. Although Labatt Blue and Ommegang are great beers they just could not hold up to Michelob’s AmberBock or Flying Bison’s Aviator Red.

Who will win? We will find out on Monday evening, but my hope rests with Flying Bison’s Aviator Red. Stick around, we can see how this unfolds.

Meanwhile, Buffalo got socked again with snow, in April! Who would have guessed? Thousands of Buffalonians, that’s who. How are most folks dealing with the additional wet stuff? By following the advise of Buffalo’s former mayor Jimmy Griffin.
