The Summer of the Mojito
2006 will be the summer of the Mojito!
Vodka has had its day in the sun with Cosmos and Martinis. Margaritas have been done to death with Tequila. Now it’s the Mojito’s turn in the spotlight.
The Mojito has taken off as one of America’s favorite new drinks. Made with rum, fresh lime juice, mint, club soda, sugar and ice. There are also numerous variations popping up in trendy clubs and restaurants. Some add a bit of mango juice or pomegranate juice for a refreshing twist. Experiment, have fun with it!
Here is a classic Mojito recipe:
1½oz of good quality white rum (Barcardi)
12 mint leaves
½ lime
2 dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Simple Syrup
In a collins glass, place the 12 mint leaves and ½ a lime. Crush well using a muddler. Add 2 dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters, cover lime with Simple Syrup (or add 4 tsp. of sugar) and fill glass with ice. Add rum and top off with club soda. Stir well and garnish with sprigs of mint or a lime wheel.
KegWorks carries a really nice set of Mojito Glasses that include a wooden muddler.
