Troubleshoot Common Draft Beer Problems

Thursday, March 15th, 2007 by David

Problems serving a perfect beer? We’re here to help!

Condition Causes Corrections
Cloudy Beer
Beer appears hazy and not clear.
Over chilling Keep refrigerator temperature between 36º to 40ºF.
Partial opening of beer faucet Always open faucet quickly and completely.
Having anything warm on or near your keg When anything that is not cold is placed on or near a cold keg, the beer may absorb warmth too.  So, be careful what you store in your kegerator!
Flat Beer
Foamy head disappears quickly.  Beer lacks usual zestful brewery-fresh flavor.

Or

Loose Foam
Large soap-like bubbles.  Foam settles quickly.

Greasy Glasses Wash glasses thoroughly with a good detergent; do not use soap.  Allow glasses to air dry.  Rinse in cold water just before serving beer.  Use beer glasses for beer only.
Improper pour Open the faucet quickly and completely, and practice for perfect foam.  Proper foam should be a tight creamy head, and should be ½” to 1″ high.
Not enough pressure Check CO2 tank - make sure it is on and not empty.

You should be able to fill a 10 oz glass in 4 seconds.  If beer runs slowly, increase pressure.

Make sure that there are no obstructions in the airline.

Check and, if needed, replace the airline or CO2 regulator and gauge.  Regulators will wear down, so be sure to replace after 4 - 6 years.

Foamy or "Wild" Beer
Too much foam, not enough liquid.
Warm beer Always keep your keg between 36º to 40ºF.
Excessive CO2 Lower the amount of CO2 going to the keg by adjusting the regulator.  Typically, you should keep your regulator set between 10 and 12 PSI.  If a keg is over pressurized, pull the relief valve on your keg coupler for a few seconds to release CO2.  Wait about 15 minutes, then turn your CO2 tank back on.  If your regulator is older and is not operating corectly, you may need to replace it.
Old beer lines Replace old beer lines.  If you bought or inherited an older system, it would be wise to replace the beer line.
Obstruction in faucet The faucet should be removed, disassembled and cleaned with hot water and a brush every few weeks.
Worn faucet parts Replace worn washers.  If faucet does not open wide, worn parts or entire faucet must be replaced.
Warm spots in your beer line All beer tubing should be kept inside your fridge.  Long beer line runs (more than 6 feet) can cause your CO2 pressure to be out of whack.  A larger inside diameter of beer tubing may be necessary.

We Carry Couplers for Any Beer
A coupler attaches to, and taps, your keg. It is the hub between the keg, the beer line to the faucet, and the air line to the CO2 tank.

It allows the gas to enter the keg and the beer to dispense, keeping your beer fresher, longer. At the right temperature, your beer will stay brewery-fresh for up to 45 days.

Some of our Most Popular Keg Couplers

US Sankey Coupler US Sankey Lever Handle Coupler - “D” System: The most popular coupler, this is used with all major USA and Canadian breweries, such as Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Molson-Coors and Labatt. Yep. West Coast Pale Ale beer mix will make beer with the same alcohol content as a standard commercial beer.

Want stronger beer?
The amount of malt extract, sugars and fruit added to a beer determine how high the alcohol content will be. The Mr. Beer® Brewer’s Guide will show you how you can make your unique brew better.

About the Process
Mr Beer® mixes are designed to naturally carbonate, so CO2 cartridges are not necessary. Carbonation naturally occurs when brewing - the yeast produces both alcohol and carbon dioxide, making perfectly pure, natural beer. Naturally carbonated beers usually have a better head and clarity.

Draft Beer Lines - How to Serve Great Tasting Beer All the Time

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007 by David

Keeping your beer lines clean makes for great tasting beer. So, it’s important to keep your entire system - beer line, faucet and couplers - clean. Regular cleaning eliminates bacteria, yeast, mold and other build-up that takes away from the flavor of your favorite beers. For best results, we recommend you clean your lines after each ½ keg.

Practice Makes Perfect - even when it comes to beer!
Cleaning your draft beer system is easy, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. Here’s our cleaning recommendation using the Deluxe Beer Line Cleaning Kit:

1. Prepare

  • Shut off the CO2 tank by turning the valve clockwise.
  • Mix one quart of warm water and 1 tbsp of Beer Line Cleaner in a one-gallon bucket.
  • Fill the Plastic Jar with the mixture of water and cleaner from the bucket.

2. Soak and Scrub Parts

  • Disconnect the coupler from the keg.
  • Unscrew the hex nut on the beer line from the top of the keg coupler.
  • Using the Spanner Wrench, remove the faucet from the tower or shank. Take the faucet apart and set it in the remaining mixture in the bucket.
  • Use the cleaning brush to scrub the faucet and its parts.
  • Rinse the faucet with cool water and reassemble it.

3. Flush Out Lines

  • Connect the Pump Assembly from the Plastic Jar to the faucet shank coupling nut with the Rubber Washer in between.
  • Tighten slightly with the Spanner Wrench and place the end of the beer line in the bucket.
  • Pump the solution through the beer line to clean

4. Final Wash

  • Now, using the Cleaning Brush, clean out all of the faucet parts that have been sitting in the Beer Line Cleaning solution. Rinse all parts under cool, fresh water and then reassemble.
  • Disconnect the Plastic Jar and rinse it with cool, fresh water.
  • Fill the Plastic Jar with fresh water and reconnect it to the faucet shank coupling nut.
  • With the end of the beer line in the bucket, pump fresh water through the beer line.

5. Reassemble

  • Disconnect the Plastic Jar, replace the assembled faucet, and tighten the coupling nut with the Spanner Wrench.
  • Attach the beer line and tap your keg!

Serving Ice Cold Suds - All About Jockey Boxes

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007 by David

Kegged beer always beats cans and bottles. Jockey Boxes are the ultimate in tailgating supplies - serve the coldest, crispest beer faster!

View our selection of Jockey Boxes

Often called a “coil box” or “cold plate box,” the name “jockey” comes from “jockey around,” meaning that these systems are easy to move from place to place.

Coil boxes are leagues above cold plates - they turn beer colder, faster. We only sell coil jockey boxes, and recommend you use these over cold plate kits.

Our jockey boxes come with everything you need to serve cold, crisp beer anywhere - even in your stadium’s parking lot! Our complete kits come with a cooler box, beer line, stainless steel coils, shank, faucet, CO2 regulator, CO2 tank and beer line connectors. Don’t be fooled by other companies that advertise lower prices, but do not give you EVERYTHING you need!

What’s Great About Them?

  • The coil system keeps the beer chilled to just the right serving temperature. All you need inside the chest is some ice and a little bit of water to keep the coils chilled. The ideal serving temperature is between 36º and 40ºF. Our coils are 50 feet long each - plenty to cool your beer.
  • Does not require electricity! So, it can be set up anywhere.
  • Uses CO2 to serve the crispest beer possible! No comparison to beer served using a traditional pump. Traditional pumps use oxygen that causes beer to go flat very quickly. With CO2, beer is fresh and your keg will last longer.
  • Faucets allow you to pour beer fast! Easily pour pitchers.

Tricks and Tips

  • Keeping the keg cool is important. So, we recommend Keg Jackets. This will keep kegs cold in most climates. Remember, kegs should never be stored in direct sunlight or in extreme heat.
  • The coil should be kept submerged in an ice water bath. As the ice melts you may need
to drain some water and add extra ice.
  • Just like all draft beer systems, jockey box systems require regular cleaning. All beer contact points - faucet body and faucet parts, coils or cold plates, beer line connectors and drain tray should be cleaned after each use.
