When Holidays Fall on a Hump Day…Can You Still Get Drunk?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 by Jm

I love the Fourth of July; it’s one of my favorite holidays. I love the ease of picnic-style parties, poolside cocktails with my family and late-night fireworks.

Most of all, I love to wrap the Fourth around a long weekend. Enjoy the day, sipping cocktails, knowing that I don’t have to start deleting spam first thing in the morning under the glare of fluorescent lighting.

That’s why this whole Wednesday thing is killing me. We should be celebrating our freedom: our freedom to blow off work for a few days in the prime of summer, our freedom to drink free from the worry of the office albatross. But a holiday on hump day…Yuk! Thursday morning, most of us will have to be fully functioning for a busy day - up bright-and-early, Star Bangled Spanner Cocktailshowered, dressed and coherent. Ugh.

I guess that feeling a sense of accomplishment on Thursday will strip me of my desire to get sauced on Wednesday (who am I kidding).

Regardless, to my dismay, I plan to lay low on the booze (after…noon) and be bright eyed and (relatively) bushy tailed post holiday.

For those ace-holding Americans that are taking the extended weekend – here’s a slammin’, patriotic drink. Throw one back for me, please!

Star-Bangled Spanner

Chill all ingredients before pouring.

½ oz green Chartreuse
½ oz Triple Sec
½ oz cherry brandy
½ oz crème violette
½ oz yellow Chartreuse
½ oz blue Curacao
½ oz brandy

Pour green Chartreuse into a chilled flute. Gently pour in Triple Sec to make the second layer. Gently add the cherry brandy for the third layer, the crème violette for the fourth, the yellow Chartreuse for the fifth and the Curacao to make the sixth. Lastly, float the brandy on top.

Enjoy!

Belikin Beer

Thursday, June 21st, 2007 by Pete

Belikin BeerIt states right on the bottle “Belikin - the beer of Belize” and they aren’t kidding. Belikin is “the” only beer available in most places in Belize. I was in Belize for 9 days and I only saw Belikin products and occasionally Red Stripe. Belikin Brewing makes 4 products: Belikin Lager, Belikin Stout, Light House, and Belikin Premium. The Belikin Company also produces Guinness Foreign Extra Stout under license from Guinness. Belikin Lager is by far the most popular beer you will find in Belize. Every place that serves alcohol will have it in bottles, and if you ask for a Belikin or just a “beer” you will get a Belikin Lager. The others can be more elusive, but are generally available at better bars and resorts. They all pretty much taste the same, the differences being that Light House is a light beer and the Belikin Premium comes in 12 ounce bottle with a alcohol content around 5.5%. I understand that Belikin on draft exists, but I never saw any draft beer in Belize.

Belikin Lager tastes pretty much like most tropical beers: slightly sweet with very low hops flavor and a clean finish, making it a refreshing beer you can drink a lot of in the tropical heat. I found the taste similar to, but even milder than, Miller High Life (which is my favorite summertime drinking beer). Belikin Lager CapThe lager goes great with the seafood and rice and beans dishes that are a staple of the Belizean diet. Belikin Lager’s alcohol content is a little lower in than most US domestic lagers at 4.8% alcohol by volume. The stout is a dark, very sweet stout with a higher alcohol content at 6.3% by volume. The stout is Belikin Stout Capsurprisingly good, but a bit too sweet to drink more than a couple of bottles in a row in the heat of Belize.

Belikin Lager and Stout come in the same bottle, the only difference is the bottle cap; green caps for lager and blue caps for stout. The bottles are the heaviest I have ever felt. They are the same size as a U.S. 12 ounce bottle, but hold 9.6 ounces. The locals joke that the bottles are as heavy empty as they are full. So, if you are US tourist looking to tie on a tropical beer buzz, be ready to put away few more bottles than you are used to drinking at home due to the smaller bottle volume and lower alcohol content. If you get sick of Belikin beer, Belize also produces many excellent rums.

Are you Garlicious? Recipe of the Week

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 by Jm

FostersFor me, this beautiful Buffalo weekend was jam packed with beautifully blown glass, life-like oil paintings, mesmerizing sculptures, and oversized cans of ultra-cold fosters at the annual Allentown Arts Festival. I spent most of the weekend browsing, bumping into friends, and buying art.

Since the weekend was busy, and I had Sunday dinner plans – I needed something quick and easy to bring to my dinner party.

Popped my head through my cupboards: soup, pretzels, oatmeal. Not gonna cut it. Scoped the freezer: dumplings, frozen edamame, soy patties. Not gonna work either. Then, I opened my fridge and remembered I had gotten my summer bonus on Friday.

SpiedieDave had come in my office and slapped my “bonus” on my desk: two bottles of Salamida’s, a bottle of the Lemon Garlicious and a bottle of Spiedie sauce. Nice!

Going to college and grad school in central New York I, of course, have had “Spiedies” pronounced “spee-dee”. For those of you outside NY, the colloquial definition of a Spiedie is a hoagie filled with marinated chicken. Similar to a chicken gyro, but immensely better. So, I figured that any sauce by Salamida would be fantastic.

ShrimpI ran to the store, picked up some shrimp and tossed them in a Ziplock with the Garlicious marinade, while I enjoyed my afternoon. When I got home, threw the shrimp on skewers and off to dinner.

We grilled the shrimp for a few minutes on each side, tossed them in a bowl with some freshly squeezed lemon. What a hit!

I would recommend you give it a try. Not only is this “recipe” quick, easy and Garlicious, but also let’s you sip beers, play all day and still show up with a great dish.

Too Many Taps To Handle

Friday, June 15th, 2007 by Tim

Our resident beer tap wizard, Dave, has once again conjured up a magnificent mélange of beer tap handles. He called in favors, trolled his top-secret locations and tapped (apologies, I couldn’t resist) his myriad connections all for you, our valued, beer-loving customers. Whether you have a particular beer on tap that you want properly marked or you’re a collector looking for rare and obscure handles, there’s a decent chance we have a tap handle you’ll be interested in.

The good news for you (and bad news for my all-around productivity) is I currently have over 80 recently acquired faucet handles on my desk, all of which need to be put online. And there are more on the way. The last time I saw this many tap handles at once was back in my restaurant management days. A keg would kick and the bartender and I would have to rummage through large plastic storage containers overflowing with handles in search of the new keg’s corresponding tap marker. Now, you have the chance to browse our digital “storage containers” to decorate your beer faucet appropriately.

Too Many Tap Handles

Our selection of beer tap handles, which will more than triple by the time all the new ones are up, is constantly changing and the most popular ones don’t last long. I’ve already managed to get a handful of the new arrivals online, some of which disappeared within a few hours of their first going live. There is always an ebb and flow to our stock, and at the moment we’re firmly entrenched in ‘flow’ mode. There will be a consistent stream of handles going up over the next little while, so check back frequently this week and beyond.
