Sangria

Thursday, July 26th, 2007 by Mike

Red SangriaIngredients:
2 bottles of inexpensive red wine (one cab, one merlot)
½ cup brandy (you can use gin)
2 fresh squeezed oranges
1 fresh squeezed lime
1 fresh squeezed lemon
2 cups of halved red grapes
1 lemon for slicing
1 lime for slicing
1 orange for slicing
1 apple for slicing
1 L ginger ale (you can use club soda)
1 tsp fine bar sugar

Mix:
Pour the 2 bottles of wine and ½-cup brandy in a glass pitcher. Squeeze the 2 oranges, 1 lime and 1 lemon into the pitcher. Cut grapes in half and add them to the pitcher. Slice the apple, orange, lemon and lime in thin slices and add 5 slices of each to the pitcher. Add the 1 tsp fine bar sugar.

Brew:
Chill in fridge for 24 hours. Make sure to cover as wine and fruits absorb scents from other foods in the fridge.

Serve:
Wine or pint glasses are ideal for serving. Add ice to the glass and fill ½ of the glass with ginger ale, fill the rest of the glass with the sangria. Take some of the fruit from the sangria and garnish the glass.

Drink:
Get hammered! Make sure to eat the fruit, as this is where all the alcohol is absorbed. You can get drunk just from eating the fruit.

Next time… White Strawberry - Raspberry Sangria!

Beer Worthy of a Light

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 by Kris

MicrobrewsWith the dramatic rise in the distribution and popularity of quality microbrews Cigarsand imported European beers there has also been an evolution in how these beers are enjoyed. Pairing these fine brews with quality hand-rolled (hecho a mano) cigars from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua or Honduras, to name a few, is also on the rise. In the past, cigars were reserved for a single-malt scotch or cognac. However, today with the availability of such a variety of quality beers - from Hefeweizens to Belgian Ales, Pale Ales to Oatmeal Stouts and everything in between - we no longer have to sacrifice enjoying our favorite smoke because we don’t want to waste it on a Bud.

Come back next week as I start pairing up smokes and brews. Feel free to respond with pairings that have worked for you, I am always looking to try new combinations!

Jello Shots Tampa Style

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 by Jm

Recently, I took a weekend trip to Tampa to see my brother. The air was so thick I could barely breathe. It took my Western New York chassis the entire trip to adjust to the syrupy breeze and the scalding sun.

Just like here in Buffalo, those that live there seem to adjust; They adjust to the sweltering summers just as New Yorkers adjust to the blistery winters. In Florida, adapting appears to rely on a few simple staples: air-conditioning, Xbox and Jello shots.

On a visit to a friend’s house, we were greeted with a tray of Jello shots to cool us down. Now this seemed to take the sizzle out of the air for a bit. I haven’t had a Jello shot in years, but these were not your average college Jello shot – they were loaded with tequila and Grand Marnier. Whoa.

The party host didn’t have a name for them, so we’ll just call them Jello Shots – Tampa Style. So, if you’re really hot this summer (or just want a really nice buzz) give these a try.Jello Shot

12 oz boiling ginger ale
2 boxes lemon Jell-O
8 oz tequila
4 oz amaretto
8 oz Grand Marnier

Mix the Jell-O and boiling ginger ale until the powder is fully dissolved. Let this mixture cool to room temperature. (If you don’t let it cool, the alcohol will evaporate.) Then, add the tequila, amaretto and Grand Marnier. Pour the mixture into paper cups. Refrigerate until set.
