Jewel of the East

Friday, February 27th, 2009

One of my very favorite types of cuisine is Indian. The curries and spices are like none other. When I’m off to enjoy a meal at Tandoori’s, or whipping up a curry dish of my own at home, I’m oftentimes stuck on what type of cocktail or beer to match up with my meal. The lassi-based martini is always a respectable choice, but I find it’s too sweet and thick for something to enjoy before or during the meal… so what to do?

I almost literally fell upon this article on yumsugar.com today and, quite frankly, am really glad I did. The author had the opportunity to sit down with Dale Degroff, the man who, to many in the mixology world, is the reviver of classic cocktails.

According to Degroff, the East India Cocktail was the Cosmopolitan of its day, back in the 19th century. A popular cocktail that everyone enjoyed that pairs especially well with Indian food. It’s a recipe like none I’ve ever tried, so I’m truly looking forward to it.

East India CocktailEast India Cocktail

1 ½ oz cognac
1 oz orange curaƧao
1 ½ oz pineapple juice
1 dash Angostura bitters
Flamed orange peel, for garnish
Nutmeg, for grating

Combine the first four ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until well mixed. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, dust with freshly grated nutmeg, and garnish by flaming the orange peel over the top of the drink.

Have another cocktail that pairs up nicely with Indian food? Tell us!

Follow the Leprechaun

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Ah, St. Patrick’s Day. It’s just 19 days away – do you know what you’ll be imbibing in? Many of the Irish-inspired St. Patty’s cocktails are quite heavy, touting a milk, cream or cream liqueur base. Those types of cocktails are fine by me in small quantities, but when I’m looking for something refreshing, I’m looking for a Leprechaun.

The Leprechaun is, quite simply, a whiskey tonic. Although this classic isn’t often thought of for St. Pat’s celebrations – I usually find people guzzling Guinness, some random green-tinted beer or as aforesaid, some creamy, minty delight. But when only a thirst-quenching cocktail will do, the Leprechaun is the perfect choice.

Leprechaun
2 oz Irish whiskey (I prefer Jameson)
Tonic water (Q Tonic is my fav)
Lemon twist, for garnish

Pour the Irish whiskey into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with tonic water. Garnish with a lemon twist. Enjoy and repeat.

Labatt Will Remain a Western New York Staple

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

In a previous post, Pete wrote about InBev’s selling of Labatt USA, which would leave the Western New York area without one of its beloved Canadian pilsners… that is, unless somebody stepped up to buy Labatt USA, keeping it in the area.

Well, looks like KPS Capital Partners has taken the challenge, as stated in this article, which means Labatt Blue and Blue Light will remain in our area. Looks like plans to smuggle it across the border can be put on the back burner.

For all of those who love Labatt, thanks to KPS Capital Partners. And thanks to Dave, for passing this fantastic news along!

Ooooh Ryan’s Irish Potato Candy!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I simply can’t get enough of these. From my first taste, I was hooked.

Irish Potatoes, you say? What’s so delicious about Irish Potatoes?

Well, these little babies are neither Irish nor potato, but share the resemblance of a little potato, and are a favorite candy during the St. Patrick’s Day season. If not Irish, and not potato, what are they? They’re scrumptious, chewy coconut candies rolled in cinnamon. And they’re to die for.

Oh Ryan's Irish Potatoes

Never before had I had the pleasure of sampling Irish Potato Candy, but now that I have, they’re sure to become a staple in my St. Pat’s celebrations.

Thanks Oh Ryan’s!

Building Your Own Tiki Bar

Friday, February 20th, 2009
Tiki Hut Backyard Bar
Photo from Steve Cavanaugh’s eHow Article

Have you ever considered building your very own tiki bar in your backyard or maybe in your basement? I have a friend who has a nice, home-built tiki bar in his backyard and it is a great place to hang out in the summer. Living in Buffalo, NY and summer do not necessarily go together, that is why, around here, you have to enjoy being outside and having fun as much as possible while you can. A tiki bar is a great way to have fun outside but still enjoy two of the world’s greatest pleasures, drinking and relaxing.

Building any type of bar can be a bit tricky, however they are so worth it when they are complete. Here, in this eHow article by Steve Cavanaugh, learn how to build a tiki bar.

Of course, now that you have your tiki bar built, you are gonna need some supplies to make the bar completely authentic. Get tons of tiki signs, cups, decorations, recipe books and more to give it that true tiki look and feel.

Now don’t forget, when everything is finalized and your bar is up and running, please send in some pics so we can post them on our site. At the very least feel free to invite me to your next party!
