Get Guinness on Tap for St. Pats

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

St. Patrick’s Day may seem far away, but 26 days isn’t all that long, if you think about it. The day the world turns green will be here before you know it - will you be ready to celebrate?

If you’re a Guinness-head like me, I’ve got just the thing for you: a Guinness Keg Fridge Conversion Kit. It comes with almost everything you need to get the good stuff on tap, in your very own home. You just need to supply the refrigerator (any old working fridge that will fit a half-keg will do), choose which air tank your local gas supplier will fill and grab a keg of Guinness.

The Guinness Keg Fridge Conversion Kit includes:

  • European specialty stout faucet
  • Nitrogen regulator to CO2 tank adapter
(in case your gas supplier only fills CO2 tanks)
  • Double gauge nitrogen regulator
  • 5-inch steel shank
  • Beer line jumper
  • Air line jumper
  • Faucet handle

Turning a fridge into a kegerator isn’t a difficult project, even if it seems daunting. Not only can you use our standard Keg Fridge Conversion Kit How-to video, but we also have experts here to help. Just give us a ring, toll free 877.636.3673.

Turn Your Fridge into a Kegerator in Minutes!

If Murphy’s Irish Stout is more your bag, we got the Murphy’s Kegerator Conversion Kit too. Check it out!

Go Tiki With the Fog Cutter

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

It may still be cold outside for a lot of us - here in Buffalo it is for sure - but that doesn’t mean we can’t heat things up inside with a tropical concoction. In fact, I believe now is the perfect time to have a taste of tiki… and carry it through the summer months.

Created by Trader Vic, a name long synonymous with tiki, the Fog Cutter is a quintessential exotic cocktail, right up there with the Mai Tai and the Zombie. Trader Vic said himself, "Fog Cutter, hell. After two of these, you won’t even see the stuff."

Check out this video of Robert Hess, aka Drink Boy, as he shows us how to prepare Trader Vic’s own Fog Cutter, step by step:

Fog Cutter
2 oz lime juice
1 oz orange juice
½ oz orgeat syrup
2 oz light rum
1 oz brandy
½ oz gin
½ oz sherry
Pineapple and cherry, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker with ice, shake up juices, orgeat, rum, brandy and gin. Strain over ice into a tiki or highball glass. Float sherry on top. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry. Drink and repeat.

Have a tiki-inspired recipe you’d like to share? Pass it along!

Cheers!

Top 5 American Strong Ales

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Stone Double Bastard AleAmerican Strong Ale is a catch-all style category for beers from 7.0 percent alcohol by volume (abv) and above.

Some may even be as high as 25% abv, and this includes the famed Sam Adams Utopias, along with a lot of other beers that fall into the "unclassifiable" category – they much of the time end up here.

Characteristics will greatly vary; some have similarities to Barley-Wines and Old Ales, to Double IPAs to Imperial Stouts. Barrel aging is certainly not out of the question, and depending on the brewery, everything but the kitchen sink can get thrown in.

Be careful with these – numerous times I’ve attempted to make one of these a session beer, with less than pretty results!

Here are my Top 5:

Port Brewing Old Viscosity

Mendocino Eye Of The Hawk

Stone Double Bastard

Dogfish Head Immort Ale

Great Lakes Nosferatu

My Valentine’s Was Better Than Yours

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Every year for Valentine’s Day, most of the people I know of head to some uppity restaurant, if they were lucky enough to make reservations in time, for an over-priced, rushed meal, accompanied by an over-priced bottle of vino, or two.

Valentine’s Day this year was my favorite ever - probably because it was the most nontraditional and most fun I’ve ever had. According to my man, all of his pals were wishing they could’ve had the same… I believe the overall consensus was "Lucky!".

Luxardo Marasca Maraschino Cherries 12-pound CanInstead of imbibing in wine or champagne, or heading out to some packed, expensive restaurant, we took a back roads drive to Dave and Busters for 25-ounce steins of Guinness, chicken nachos, skee ball, air hockey and boxing. Man, do I love skee ball. Always have. In fact, it may be a bit of an obsession. Best part is, we won more game credits than we started with, so next time we have double games to play for free. Double the skee ball? I’m in freaking heaven.

Dave, (you know, KW owner), had one really great Valentine’s idea that I didn’t partake in, although I’m sure it would’ve been a blast… perhaps next year we’ll try his "Cover Her in Cherries" suggestion. The 12-pound can of Luxardo Maraschino Cherries should do the trick.

Nice Cans!

Friday, February 13th, 2009

This is Jeff. This is Jeff’s world-renowned beer can collection - which boasts over 56,000 beer cans. It is the single-largest collection of vintage beer cans of its kind on the planet.

Portrait of Jeff

To say that Jeff Lebo is obsessed is probably an understatement, but that obsession has earned him notoriety in the world of beer can collectables. Followers and spectators the world over - even from as far away as South Africa - have come to Lebo’s Pennsylvania "Beer Can Mecca" to bask in all its colorful, metallic glory.

In fact, each room divides Jeff’s massive collection by geographic area. There are rooms dedicated to vintage beer cans from Scandinavia, British Isles, Germany, and many other popular brewing regions.

Scandinavian Beers

Dark Continent Beers

German Beer Cans

American and Canadian Beers

A former board member of the BCCA (Brewery Collectibles Club of America), Jeff is now vice president of the Keystone Chapter of the BCCA. Jeff buys and sells vintage beer cans on his website cansmartbeercans.com - which also even provides information for determining the value of vintage cans that may be in your collection.

Kinda makes that one-shelf collection you’ve got going on look pretty weak, huh? ;)
