Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA

Monday, May 4th, 2009 by Liz

After seeing the movie Beer Wars, I seriously considered driving to Delaware to convince the founder and President of Dogfish Head, Sam Calagione, to be my friend. There’s no denying that the story of "America’s most interesting and adventurous small brewery" (according to international beer writer, the late Michael Jackson) is a heartwarming one – you can read part of it here. It’s easy to see that the people at Dogfish Head are dedicated to their craft and their very passion goes directly into each beer that they brew. Prior to seeing the movie, I had heard of the brewery and their stuff was somewhere on my ever-growing list of things to try. After the film, I made the executive decision to bump Dogfish Head to the top of the list. I just couldn’t wait and it seemed way less creepy than showing up at the brewery’s door alone and thirsty.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPAI picked up a four pack of their 90 Minute IPA, as IPA’s are a favorite of mine and Esquire Magazine said that Dogfish Head’s might just be the best in America. I didn’t need Esquire’s praise though, with an "A" rating from Beeradvocate, I knew it had to be good. My faith in BA stands, as I was thoroughly impressed with this beer. It’s brewed to be enjoyed in a snifter and the aroma is certainly enjoyable. The taste is extremely well balanced for a double IPA and although there is a serious hop explosion, it is not too overwhelming thanks to sweet raisin and citrus flavors and malt that makes itself known. It’s perfectly carbonated and a great beer to savor. And savor, you should. With a 9% ABV, one was enough for me. Let’s just say I’m glad they sell it in four packs. Its recommended pairings include pork chops, beef, grilled fish, frites, focaccia, split pea soup, Stilton cheese and escargot. I chose to do my own thing and enjoy it with a grilled BBQ chicken breast with melted mozzarella on a fresh Kaiser roll and my beer-loving friend Brian. We both agreed it was the perfect way to compliment our first outdoor meal of the season. My only complaint is that it’s way too drinkable for such an alcoholic beverage.

After my first taste of Dogfish Head, I’m definitely thirsty for more. Next on the list, Indian Brown Ale and Midas Touch Golden Elixir! Poor Sam can rest easy, as I’m so pleased by the beer and its availability here that I won’t go rushing off to Delaware just yet, although planning a summer vacation in Rehoboth Beach does become more and more tempting with every bottle.

DFH does make a fantastic imperial IPA, don’t they? I’ll have my review of the Indian Brown Ale soon :)

Indeed! The taste is really unique and I’m a big fan of any beer that has me feeling good half-way through the first bottle.

Can’t wait to see what you thought of the Brown Ale, I’ll have to try it myself before then so we can compare notes!

mmmm.. and boy is it good!

Nice review, Liz! Indian Brown Ale is a great session beer. If you want something higher test, get a bottle of the Palo Santo.

Thanks Deron, I’ll have to check that out!
