Who Needs Evolution When There’s KegWorks?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We’re pros when it comes to shipping our products to the US and Canada — but if you’re craving a little bit of KegWorks anywhere else in the world, you’ll need to contact us directly so we can make special shipping arrangements for you. It’s still easy; we just want to make sure that we get it right, so you get your stuff when you need it.

We have an International Contact Form right on the site. Customers just fill in the fields on that form to let us know what they want to order and where it needs to go. Our team then finds the most efficient and cost-effective way to get the order out and everyone’s happy.

I dont even have a way to explain this imageMost international shipping inquires go something like this:

"Is it possible for you to send 10 sets of these Stainless Steel Spoon Straws to Great Britain by next month?
Thanks"

However, we recently received an inquiry that really stood out.

Our friend Luke from New South Wales, Australia wanted to order a couple Rum Runner Plastic Drink Flasks and this is what he wrote:

Hi guys,

Me and a bunch of my mates have a festival coming up soon, and I am very interested in ordering 3 x rum runner flask sets, with possibly a few more sets going forward.

In Australia, the innovative smuggle of alcohol is an important institute – from the lowly wombat to the giant red kangaroo, they are endowed with pouch like attachments for the smuggle of grog (and sometimes their young?) – we humans are an introduced species down here, and are yet to evolve to compete with the likes of (bastard) wombats – they are winning the race!!! Help us!!!

Could you please let me know if these can be sent to Australia

Thanks Heaps!

We were absolutely thrilled to send Luke his flasks and he was kind enough to let us share his email with all of you. So, in case you can’t tell – we love fun customers and we’re always up for a good laugh.

Thanks Luke!

A Public Service Announcement from KegWorks: NEVER DO THIS

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I don’t know what would possess someone to put a keg in a fire, but it is not a good idea.

A 15-year-old Sellersville boy was injured Monday afternoon when a beer keg placed into a fire exploded, officials said.

The boy, who suffered a cut to his head, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital by helicopter.

Sellersville Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Lindsay said the unidentified boy probably was hit by flying metal.

The incident happened about 4:15 p.m. when several youngsters gathered behind some homes on Main Street near Longwood Avenue, Lindsay said.

Remember folks, kegs contain liquid and/or gas under pressure and can be dangerous when modified or improperly handled…or superheated in a fire. We implore all our wonderful customers out there to return their kegs in prompt manner to the brewery or beer distributor from which they were purchased.

It is usually in your best interest as well, since most states require a hefty keg deposit that you get back when the keg is returned in good order. My guess is these kids could have got $30 or $40 deposit back rather than a helicopter ride to the hospital. Also, damaging and repurposing kegs just makes beer more expensive for everyone when breweries are forced to increase the price of their beer to cover the costs of replacing lost kegs.

Tax Beer for Health Care Money? Come on!

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I have to say, Deron really knows how to get me going in the morning, especially when it comes to issues involving one of our simplest and favorite pleasures – beer.

According to this article he sent me this morning, we soon may be shelling out $2 more per case of beer, in order to provide health insurance for everyone. With about 50 million Americans currently uninsured, the money needed could in no way be garnered from beer and liquor money alone.

The proposal would also add a tax, albeit much lower, to sugary sodas and the like. The idea here, I would assume, is to tax people for what some may consider " poor health choices" when it comes to what we put in our bodies. Fine and dandy, but red wine and dark beers are both part of a healthy heart diet when taken in moderate amounts.

I’m all for health care reform, but back off the beer!

The World’s Hottest Hot Sauce

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Growing up in Buffalo, I’ve had my share of hot sauces – usually slathered on wings. Frank’s Red Hot, for example, has become an integral part of my diet. I add it too scrambled eggs, home fries, french fries (practically any way you fry a potato, really), even mac and cheese.

Blairs Death Hot Sauce 4 PackNew to my palate are the Death Hot Sauces from Blair, the same company that makes what the Guinness Book of World Records deems as the hottest hot sauce in the world.

Blair’s Death Hot Sauce 4-Pack may not include the hottest hot sauce under the sun, but they’re certainly hotter than most of what I’ve tasted out there, with flavor to boot. Flavor, in all honesty, can make or break a hot sauce for me. I can take a hell of a lot of heat, but if it’s not backed up by real flavor, I find it lacking.

This particular pack of 4 hot sauces can be seen on The Food Network and features

  • Blair’s Original Death Sauce
  • Blair’s Jalapeño Death Sauce
  • Blair’s Sudden Death Sauce
  • Blair’s After Death Sauce (you’ve got to watch out with this one)

If you love hot sauce as much as I do, or if you’re looking for a unique gift to spice up Dad’s every meal (Father’s Day isn’t far away!), then you must try Blair’s Death Hot Sauce 4-Pack… that is, if you think you’re man enough.

Organize Your Bar for Speed and Efficiency

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

3-tap beer tower is efficient and sleekEven in tougher economic times, it may behoove bar owners to pick up efficiency-inducing items. Overall business may not be steadily growing but the regular business your bar does see will probably shell out a bit more if served more quickly and efficiently than at another establishment.

Save Time Pouring Draft Beer
Bars set up their draft beer systems in a number of ways, as you may have noticed. In regard to expediency, I am speaking only to faucet placement. Many bars I’ve been to have their taps running from one end of the bar to the other, forcing bartenders to run up and down, wasting time and forcing paying customers to wait.

That’s where 3- and 4-tap towers come in. Instead of having 7 beer faucets spanning across the entire bar, this particular establishment (one of my favs, by the way) utilizes both a 3-tap tower and a 4-tap tower, right next to each other. This keeps all of the draft together in a spot that’s easy to access, cuts pouring and running time, and it looks sleek too!

Save Time Mixing Well Drinks
Draft beer isn’t the only area of your bar that can be made more efficient – your well liquor can be better organized too. Notice the speed racks running along the entire length of the bar, in the picture below. Keeping your most-used liquors directly in front of the bartender saves more time mixing drinks than you can imagine, leaving him with time to make even more money, serving even more customers.

So, What is a Craft Beer?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

The phrases "craft beer" and "craft brewer" are tossed around quite frequently these days, especially last week during American Craft Beer Week. Since the increased use of these phrases, I noticed that not everyone knows what exactly a craft beer or brewer is.

The Brewers Association describes the craft brewer as "small, independent and traditional" as defined by these numbers and technical criteria, respectively; annual production is less than 2 million barrels, less than 25% of the brewery is owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member (who is not a craft brewer), and brewer either has an all malt flagship or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or those whose adjuncts enhance flavor rather than lighten it [source].

So, what does that mean to you and the beer you’re drinking?

Craft beers will generally have a more complex taste and fuller body than typical light American styles, like pilsners. More specialty malts and hops are used in craft brews than in standard lagers, creating beers with notes of caramel, sweet bread, chocolate, coffee, molasses, citrus, flowers, cloves and more, depending on amounts and types of malts, hops and yeasts used.

Treat yourself to the complex world of craft beer today! Wondering where to start? Check out our most recent Beer Reviews to find something that fits your palate.

Cheers!

Top 5 Belgian Strong Pale Ales

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Now that we’re (for the most part) done covering my top 5 styles of Bock beers and their relatives, I thought it would be a good time to start focusing on some more seasonal brews. And when I say "seasonal," I mean warmer weather beers. The forest is abloom, Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us, and even though I had to turn the furnace on yesterday to bring the heat in my house up to a tolerable level, I’m still pretty psyched about summer starting up. So to that end, I’d like to talk about my Top 5 Belgian Strong Pale Ales.

Duvel Belgian Strong Pale AleBelgian Strong Pales are, well, a higher test version of Belgian Pale Ale, a style that is very common and that dominates the Belgian Brewing scene. Originally developed by the Moorgat brewery in the 1940′s as a response to the growing popularity of German & Czech Pilsners, they tend to be less bitter than their English and American counterparts, using aged hop varieties for a more delicate finish. These beers are pale straw to golden with even some amber hues in color, but that color is always brilliant. Like a lot of the Belgian styles, a dense, rocky, persistent white head will always be an earmark of this style.

The aroma of these beers will always be complex, with some significant fruity undertones, some spice, and some perfumy, floral hop characteristics. Flavor-wise, there will be a marriage of spicy, fruity alcohol flavors, supported by some soft malt. Also present can be some warming alcohol notes, since the range for these beers can be from 7.5% to 10.5%.

As far as food pairings go, BSPA isn’t the most versatile beer out there, but it’s at the top of my list for pairing with seafood, from soups and chowders to the oiliest, richest fish dishes available. It also works very well with Asian and Indian food.

Belgian Strong Pale Ale can sometimes easily be mistaken for a Triple, especially ones that are higher than 9% alcohol, but the give-away is that they’ll be a bit lighter-bodied, crisper, and drier. That drier finish and lighter body serves to make the aggressive hopping and spiciness more prominent. The best examples of this style are complex and delicate, and Duvel, as many of you already know, is the absolute benchmark of the style, and of course makes my list. Few beer styles have a significant, stand-above-the-crowd commercial example, and Duvel is it. If you’re new to Belgian Strong Pale Ale, that is your first purchase (but feel free to follow through with the other four I recommend J). Here’s to summer!
