All Trained Up!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Our Customer Service staff has been going through some intense advanced draft beer training. When my turn was approaching, I was feeling like, why me, thinking I was going to be in some room being lectured to about beer. Not even the most avid beer drinker wants that.

But after attending I must admit, I was surprised. Never thought a calculator was used to get beer in a glass. Flow speed, PSI, gas mixers and nitrogen generators. There is a lot of science behind this stuff! I will never walk into a bar and look at it the same.

Was out to dinner on Mother’s Day and could not resist asking the bartender where they house their kegs. I just wanted to figure out the distance from the cooler to the tower, and what gases and pressure they might be using to push the beer.

Nerdy, if I must say so myself, especially since I was not drinking beer. But when one is armed with this much knowledge, it must be put to use. To whom much is given, much is expected.

So, when you call our Customer Service department expect that you will not only reach a courteous rep, but one that has the knowledge to handle your most agonizing situations.

Please call soon, before we start answering questions that have not been asked yet.

PLEASE! Like now.

The Perfect Party Plate

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Party throwers, meet the perfect plate for entertaining.

The Go Plate Food and Beverage Holder is quite possibly the most practical get-together essential one could offer when entertaining. The sturdy, reusable plastic tray fits perfectly snug over a beer or soda can, cup or bottle so guests can carry their meals and drinks easily in one hand. The Go Plate single-handedly (oh yes, I went there) resolves the age-old issue of losing track of one’s drink when off to grab a pile of food.

The Go Plate Food and Beverage Holder

Perfect for get-togethers of all sizes, this plate stays put comfortably over your drink while you enjoy your food, and when you’re ready for a sip, you simply lift the plate off and have a swig. Plus, they’re hand washable and even top-rack dishwasher safe, so they’re cost effective too.

The 10-inch Go Plates are ideal for warm or cold meals and come in a pack of 42, all for $48.50. This summer, entertain like a pro, with Go Plates.

Beer-Pouring Robot

Monday, May 11th, 2009

This machine bartender is awesome. What I thought was interesting about this bartender robot is that he moves around like a human as if he is multitasking behind the bar. He is dressed nicely, rings the bell and makes motions towards his tip jar. I wonder if this robot pours mixed drinks, too?

Robots with drinking-related jobs seems to be popping up all over. Remember the…

Rogue Dead Guy Ale

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Rogue Dead Guy AleI had to try another from the list of Deron’s favorite maibocks / helles bocks; specifically, his favorite of the maibocks (so good, he says, he had it at his wedding reception)… and now I understand why he loves it so much.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale poured a deep honey brown, topped with a thin head that sticks around for a bit, despite its lack of height. Its aroma held an essence of peaches, oddly enough – nothing overbearing but a hint of peaches in the nose all the same.

Dead Guy Ale sat lightly in my mouth and was well carbonated, but not overwhelmingly so. Between the mouthfeel and carbonation, I found it to be rather refreshing and very drinkable, even at 6.5% ABV. The ale is well balanced between hops and malt, but not quite as full flavored as some maibocks I’ve had, which probably feeds into its refreshing nature. It would make a great session beer, as Deron himself can attest. The sip is smooth from beginning to end, with the hint of peach emerging once again in the finish.

Will most definitely enjoy this brew again.

Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Dogfish Head Indian Brown AleAs promised in a comment on Liz’s DFH 90 Minute Imperial IPA post, I would have my review of the Indian Brown Ale soon, and soon it is.

Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale pours a deep brown, nearly black, with a ½" head that disappeared quickly. Its aroma is one of floral hops and dark molasses; not often that I smell a good amount of hops in a brown ale. Of course, as it turned out, upon first sip, I found that it is the hoppiest brown ale I’ve ever tasted, but by no means unbalanced. Instead, the hops add a kick to what might otherwise be too thick or malty to enjoy.

Indian Brown Ale offers a medium body with a bit of chewiness to the mouthfeel. Swirling around in my mouth, I can distinguish bitter dark chocolate tones married with roasted brown sugar. The brew is fully carbonated, but with smaller bubbles than most beers – almost champagne like. This adds a refreshing smoothness to the otherwise bold, bold brown ale. I wouldn’t describe it as a session beer for my tastes, but I would definitely enjoy it again, next time I’m looking for a bold and balanced brew. At 7.2% ABV, too many of these would have me on the floor.

Don’t Let Them Take Craft Beers Away from NY!

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Received this email from Deron this morning. If the below takes place, NY will no longer be able to enjoy craft beers from around the rest of the country! Help us to keep craft beers in NY – don’t let the government take away what simple pleasures we have.

Dear New York Beer Activist,

At the request of the New York State Brewers Association, we are alerting you to an issue which could dramatically affect your access to the craft beers made by small breweries all across the country.

As you have likely learned, the state of New York recently enacted a requirement that bottled products sold in your state must bear a New York-specific UPC code for bottle deposit and redemption purposes. This requirement will have severe negative impacts on many businesses, including and particularly, small breweries. The cost to produce a state-specific label with a unique UPC and the inventory and shipping challenges that presents, will mean many small breweries will be forced to pull their beers out of the New York market because the cost of doing business in the state will be simply too high. And just think of the precedent this potentially sets for other states should they enact similar requirements…small brewer out-of-state sales could be decimated coast to coast.

Several brewing companies have already weighed in on this issue with the Governor, explaining they would have no choice but to discontinue distribution of their beers. This is bad for the state of New York, bad for small brewers everywhere, and perhaps worst of all for New York residents who are craft beer drinkers. Access to the wide range of beer you currently enjoy will be severely limited in the future should this requirement remain on the books.

Please take a few minutes and call or email your State Senator and Assemblyman. Let them know that you feel the New York-specific UPC is a bad idea for business and a bad idea for Empire State residents who drink craft beer and vote. Ask them to support a repeal of the New York-specific UPC requirement as contained in the recently passed Bottle Bill.

Thanks for standing up for consumer choice and America’s small brewers.

Whether you’re a citizen of NY or not, stand up with us against this law being passed, for craft breweries and craft beer lovers everywhere!

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Deliciously refreshing, especially for a brown ale.

Rogue Hazelnut Brown NectarRogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar was a random choice; I walked up and down, staring at the wall of beer at Wegmans, unsure as to what I should pick up. I closed my eyes, pointed, and there it was… my next beer tasting choice. And oh, how glad I am to have grabbed this one up.

Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown Nectar pours a deep reddish brown with a nearly non-existent head and treats the nose to an aroma that’s sweet and light; nothing too fragrant. It offers a medium-light body with higher carbonation than other brown ales I’ve had, which adds a crispness that I can only describe as refreshing. This is an important point too; most of the time, I stay away from brews with higher carbonation because usually, they just don’t do it for me. But in the Hazelnut Brown Nectar, it was quite pleasurable.

Hops enter in at the beginning of the sip but smooth out to a sweet malt; an essence of butterscotch. Don’t be turned off by that though – this beer is in no way syrupy or over-sweet. When I say essence, I mean it.

This beer finishes with a rich, full flavor of nuts. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar is very enjoyable – I could even see myself choosing it on a hot day. Definitely a sessionable brew for me, although at 6.20% ABV, it could creep up and toss me onto the floor if I’m not careful!
