Beer Wars on DVD

Friday, June 12th, 2009

If you missed the one night screening of Beer Wars back in April, today is your day! The 89-minute independent documentary is now available on DVD. They’ve made 10,000 copies of the bold film, so you can go on a no-holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry in the comfort of your own home (with a beer and some Buffalo Chicken Wings of course!)

Discover the truth behind the label of your favorite beer as you witness scenes of the daily battles and all out wars that dominate one of America’s favorite industries. Special features include the Beer Wars Live Panel Discussion, Deleted Scenes and Trailers.

Read my review of Beer Wars or check out what CNN had to say about the movie:

Some things you should know…

  • Filmmaker Anat Baron is self-distributing this film, so every DVD sale supports her efforts
  • This film will not be available on Netflix, iTunes or Amazon until next year. It is only available via the Beer Wars website
  • This is an all-region NTSC DVD that is compatible with standard NTSC and all-region DVD players
  • DVD packaging is unique – made of 100% post-consumer, recycled material with a side pocket to eliminate the use of a plastic tray and printed with vegetable-based inks

Classic Vintage Bar Style

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I grew up around kids with vintage Chevelles, GTOs… even a ’56 Chevy. Most of these guys even Vintage Pin Up Girl Liquor Signlooked the part for the cars they drove, clad in white t-shirts with sleeves rolled up, containing a pack of Lucky Strikes (not kidding), blue jeans, rolled at the bottom, over black Dr. Martins, all topped off with some serious black leather and greased-back hair.

When it comes to home or commercial bars, each one has its own style, reflecting that of the person or persons that put their heart into it. You’ve got your sports bars, your tropical tiki-inspired bars, your English or Irish pub style bars and, of course, one of my personal favorites, the classic greaser bar, which reminds me of days with my old pals at the speedway or hanging around the garage, getting to know the inside of an engine block.

The moment I saw this vintage bar sign, I was whisked back to the days of my childhood which, to be perfectly honest, aren’t that far back (the above mentioned cars were vintage when we were kids, hahaha) but memories they are and this Vintage Liquor Pin-Up Girl Sign took me on a much enjoyed journey.

If you’re looking for ways to add classic vintage character to your bar, this is a perfect way to start.

Cheers!

Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Sunday afternoons are a perfect time to enjoy a light buzz, in my opinion, before heading back to a full week at work. You’re back home relatively early and ready for a relaxing evening, yet you still have a day kicking back with friends, music and a few pops. In all honesty, I feel like spending my Sunday afternoons in this fashion makes the weekend feel a hell of a lot longer than just 2 days.

Van Gogh Double Espresso Double Caffeine VodkaMost Sundays, I spend a good part of the afternoon at my favorite watering hole, Staples (in Allentown) while my other half tends bar. I usually bring my laptop along and play around with new website ideas, digital manipulations and the like. My drinks of choice tend to stay in the Guinness or whiskey-and-tea range, but sometimes, especially if something new has arrived, I’ll switch it up a bit.

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of trying a shot of Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka. Not only is the taste of espresso infused, but the caffeine is as well. I’ve got to say – it is one tasty shot! I worked at SPoT, a local coffee shop through my college years, so I’m no stranger to straight-up espresso. Van Gogh captures the flavor perfectly, with a hint of vodka-taste as it goes down. At 70 proof, I was surprised I didn’t taste it more, but of course coffee tends to overtake other flavors rather well.

If a straight shot of espresso vodka isn’t quite your cup of tea (or coffee, for that matter), try it in this recipe, which I found on the Van Gogh website.

Almond Cappuccino
1½ oz Van Gogh Double Espresso Vodka
½ oz amaretto
1 oz Starbucks Cream Liqueur

Pour ingredients into cocktail shaker and add crushed ice. Let stand for five seconds. Shake vigorously for five seconds. Strain into martini glass.

Riding Lawnmower Beer Run?

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Ed sent me a link to this story, published by Associated Press on June 5th. (Thanks Ed!)

Seems a 51-year-old man ran out of beer, so instead of sending a designated driver out to retrieve some more, he and a pal took it upon themselves to get it on their own…. by way of riding lawnmower.

Yep, they took a riding lawnmower on a beer run.

Does this qualify as drunk driving? Not quite, but it does qualify as an OUI (Operating Under the Influence), and it does get your driver’s license revoked. Well played, dudes.

Beer Trumps a Necktie Every Time

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Having trouble trying to figure out what to get dear old Dad? You’ve been filling his closet with ties and the like for years. Why not break out of the norm and get him something he’d really, truly love?

Here’s some inspiration to get the wheels turning.

British Imperial PintsAuthentic British Imperial Pint Glasses
Have a dad who loves his beer? Imported straight from Europe, British Imperial Pints (or "nonics" as they are often called) are designed with a heavy ridge to help keep them from shattering when stacked and to offer drinkers a spot to easily and securely grab hold of the pint. What’s more, these pints feature the official European Union seal. You can’t get more authentic than that!
Blair's Death hot SauceBlair’s Death Hot Sauce Mini 4-Pack
Does your dad consider himself extreme? If your dad is like mine, he loves hot sauce on everything – and lots of it. Death Sauces by Blair are a particularly special treat, as extreme heat is married with taste. The mini pack features Blair’s Original Death Sauce, After Death Sauce, Jalapeño Death Sauce and for the truly aggressive, Sudden Death Sauce.
300 Beers to Try Before You Die300 Beers to Try Before You Die
If your dad fancies himself a bit of a beer connoisseur, this book will open him up to brews even he didn’t know existed! Fully illustrated, the book divides beer by type, including bitters, best bitters, pilsners, brown and mild ales, pale ales, extra strong beers and bitters, old ales and barley wines, golden ales, porters and stouts, alt and amber ales, fruit beers, and beires de garde.

Find these gifts and more, here.
