Creative Cocktail Fuze-sion

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Ever had one of those nights where you crave just a single solitary cocktail, but don’t want to get up off your lazy duff and hit the store? I think we all go through that at one point or another.

Fuze Banana ColadaIn fact, I had just such a wild hair this past weekend. I found myself shuffling around and seriously craving a little something with rum in it. Now, anyone who knows me, knows I’m a beer guy, so when I get a craving for a cocktail, it’s something kinda special. For me, it doesn’t often happen, but when it does, I tend to pay attention to it.

As I cracked open the fridge, the only things available for use as mixers was some French vanilla coffee creamer (Eeeww!), milk (gross!), water (not gonna happen) and a very lonely looking bottle of— Ooh! Hmmm… This is promising: Fuze Banana Colada. Sold!

This improvised drink was awesome from the first sip to the last drop. The only thing that could potentially help make this cocktail born of inventiveness better would be a blender and a lot more ice.

I think I’m going to have to run to the store at some point and pick up more Banana Colada "mix". I imagine this will easily make a great cocktail for those quiet, warm nights sitting out on the deck stargazing or at a summer bonfire. Give it a try.

Best News Ever: Beer Hydrates Better Than Water

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Have I got your attention yet? I know that headline got mine (thanks for passing the article, Margaret!)

My first thought was, How? I mean, one of the definitions of "hydrate" itself is to canteen"supply water to (a person, for example) in order to restore or maintain fluid balance" [source]. Of course, one of the key components of beer is water, so, I had to delve deeper.

According to the article, scientists had studied 25 students, putting their bodies through grueling runs in temperatures reaching 104°. Afterward, apparently half (would that be 12.5 people?) were given water after their trainings and the other half were given a Spanish lager.

They determined that the beer drinkers had ‘slightly better’ rehydration effects, which researchers attribute to sugars, salts, and bubbles in beer enhancing the body’s ability to absorb water. The carbohydrates in beer also help refill calorie deficits.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to put this theory to the test… but why wait for a run? Perhaps I should see how well beer rehydrates a web designer mid-way through the day.

Auctioning for a Good Cause: Win Cool Stuff and Help Compass House

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

KegWorks is about more than cold, crisp, delicious beer, fantastic cocktails and cool products. We’re about helping people too.

Compass HouseOur official corporate charity is Compass House, a simply amazing organization that provides safe shelter, services, and direction for runaway and homeless youth in Western NY. Compass House is the only organization of its kind in our area and all of their services are completely voluntary. No matter what brings troubled youths to Compass House, they’ll always be assisted in a non-judgmental, non-authoritarian manner so that they are able to find solutions for their problems, without ever feeling blamed.

We sincerely believe in their mission, their people and the great things they do. We’re not the only ones! When the most legendary rock band from Buffalo isn’t busy selling more than 90 million records in the US, they help the Compass House too. The Goo Goo Dolls and their biggest fans like to help Compass House by hosting an annual auction on behalf of the organization (among other things!).

Compass House Auction 2009

This year’s auction started today and runs through this Sunday, June 7th with every single penny of your donation going directly to Compass House via PayPal. Past auctions have brought in more than $20,000 in donations and seeing as this is the 7th year (and 7 is a lucky number) we’re hoping to have the best year yet!

In addition to all kinds of amazing and exclusive Goo Goo Dolls items, you’ll have a chance to bid on cool stuff from other musical artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen and Weezer to Britney Spears! There are also autographed guitars, signed Buffalo Sabres hockey sticks, coolers, Nascar tickets, concert tickets, handmade jewelry and more!

It’s easy, it’s totally secure and you’re doing a great thing if you bid.

Click here to bid on items through Absolute Goo and check out the select items we’ve got on eBay right here.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers to good beer and better people!

A Recipe for Refreshment

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Liz’s post on how to make soda water this week has my mind whirling with ideas for refreshing beverages! The temperatures are, albeit slowly, steadily rising here in the Queen City and my taste buds are yearning for only the most thirst-quenching of drinks.

If you’re feeling it too, I’ve got a slew of soda siphon recipes that SCREAM refreshment. Enjoy!

Sparkling Punch

Sparkling Punch (non-alcoholic)
2 cups orange juice
6 oz unsweetened pineapple juice
1 cup unsweetened apple juice
3 Tbsp lemon juice (optional)
12 oz soda water

Combine the fruit juices in a large pitcher. Make 12-ounces soda water with your soda siphon. Add soda water to juice mixture. Pour over ice. Makes about four 10-ounce servings.

Le Mans
3 oz vodka
1 oz Cointreau
12 oz soda water
2 – 3 cracked ice cubes
1 slice lemon

Start with putting ice cubes in a glass. Add vodka and Cointreau. Make soda water and add to mixture. Float the slice of lemon on top.

Hawaiian Hook
2 oz amaretto
2 oz Southern Comfort
1 oz pineapple juice
3 drops grenadine
6 oz soda water

Pour amaretto and Southern Comfort into a cocktail shaker over ice. Add pineapple juice and grenadine. Top with soda water. Shake and serve.

Drinking Rules for Grown-Ups

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I’ve been a big fan of the cocktail writing of David Wondrich for a long time and became a bigger fan after seeing him speak in person a few times at last year’s Tales of the Cocktail. He writes about his own personal drinking rules he’s developed over the years that has helped him remain "employed, housed and married". As someone who’s been in the alcohol business for a long time, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your own set of rules. These guidelines are what separate the pros from the rookies / amateurs. You’ve seen the rookies before…don’t be one.

How Not to Become Drunk by David Wondrich

I would also add making sure you have a favorite cabby on your cell phone speed dial, in case you lose track (and you will occasionally) of your own rule book.

Enjoy responsibly!

–Tom
