A Modern Fry Basket for Sleek Eateries

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Modern Fry BasketPhotographing our new products gives me the chance to really check out the items before they go to the website. This past week I had the opportunity to photograph an interesting fry holder that just went up on the site.

The wrought iron finish and the skewed rings that hold the fry or snack paper gives it a modern, yet whimsical touch, and the bold black lines of the basket give it more visual strength than a typical container for fries would have. It seems like sometimes it’s the intangible things that make people remember you more, and this slightly unusual basket seems just right to me.

All in all if you are looking for a modern fry holder that catches your customer’s attention, look to this fry holder and watch the customers fondly recollect your distinctive décor.

Can’t Find a Breathalyzer? There’s an App for That.

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

A couple of my friends attended a wine festival last weekend and the first thing they thought to mention when discussing it wasn’t a red, a white, or even a particular winery. They were so excited to tell us about their opportunity to take Breathalyzer tests before leaving that they didn’t mention much about the wine at all.

Police were administering free tests for festival-goers as they left the site and from what I heard people thought it was pretty cool. In fact, many of them voluntarily assessed their blood alcohol content, even if they weren’t driving. I guess people are curious to know how just how drunk they actually are. I was at a bar/brewery in Montreal once and although we’d taken a train and walked several blocks to get there, I couldn’t resist the Breathalyzer machine outside of the bathroom. Something about it was just so fascinating.

It’s no wonder I was captivated when I saw the headline "Not Sure If You’re Too Drunk to Drive? There’s an App for That" in an email newsletter. Yep, that’s right – Dutch brewing giant Grolsch has used the iPhone’s motion-sensing accelerometer to develop an iPhone application that can help drinkers determine their level of intoxication, by challenging their ability to walk in a straight line.

The app is not an actual alcohol test but it does encourage drinkers to monitor their consumption in a "fun, innovative way" and share it with their friends.

It’s a smart move by the Grolsch and all in all a great idea. Now they just have to create a version for the US market!

Vintage Style: French Tin Bar Signs

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

This week I shot these vintage French tin signs and absolutely loved them! These French liquor signs are from ages past and go perfectly with the beautiful Craftsman style architecture in my apartment (I obviously purchased them immediately).

Vintage French Tin Bar Signs

Buffalo, NY is actually a rich center for beautiful turn-of-the-century homes and skyscrapers. Some of my favorite locations include the Central Terminal (I’ve had an art exhibit there) and city hall (not quite as much corruption as Gothom, possibly?). These buildings of yesteryear bring back the nostalgic feel of Buffalo when this city was thriving and there were more millionaires per capita than in any other US city.

Being from outside Buffalo, I feel that I have a unique perspective on this city that many that have lived here forever have forgotten. This is a friendly, vibrant town where people care about others, give to charities more than I’ve ever seen and have some of the most interesting parties that I’ve ever been to.

So next time you want to think back to the good old times, gaze up at these windows of the past and imagine what the future can bring.

How to Play Beer Pong

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Beer Pong (also known as Beirut) is a popular drinking game, a competitive “team sport” and for weekend warriors, a way of life.

Simple to play, easy to learn and entertaining for players and spectators alike, beer pong games are a bar league and tailgating favorite.

Remember, play beer pong responsibly. Don’t pong and drive!

What You Need to Play Beer Pong

  • Two teams each consisting of two people
  • A level playing surface (7-feet long by 3-feet wide is ideal
  • (22) 12-ounce plastic cups (10 per team and 2 water cups)
  • Ping-pong balls (you need at least 2, but the more the better)
  • Beer (or another tasty beverage all players agree on)

Beer Pong Set Up
The game involves two teams, each stationed on opposite ends of a table. Cups of beer are arranged in a pyramid shape on each side and the players take turns tossing ping-pong balls aimed at the other team’s cups. When a ball is "sunk," the defending (non-shooting) team must remove that cup from the table and drink its contents.

The object of the game is to eliminate the opposing team’s cups before they can eliminate yours.

If you have beer pong racks, it’s easy. If you don’t, arrange the beer pong cups according to the diagram below.

Fill all beer pong cups about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way with beer. Place an extra cup, filled with water, off to the side for rinsing of your balls.

Beer Pong Rules
Although there are currently no "official" beer pong rules, this collection of widely accepted beer pong tips should get you off to a great start.

  • Start Your Beer Pong Game: One player from each team is selected to take an initial shot that determines which team goes first.

While looking each other in the eye, players count to three and take a shot at the same time. If only one of them makes the shot, their team goes first. If they both make or miss their shot, players go again.

After the first game, the winning team gets the first shot.

  • Turns: Each beer pong team shoots twice per turn; each player taking one shot.

If both players make their shot, the balls are returned and that team receives an extra turn.

  • Shooting: The ball can be tossed or bounced into the cup.

A tossed ball that is sunk is worth one cup (the cup that it lands in). A bounced shot that is sunk is worth two cups (the one in which the shot was made and another from the pyramid).

There is a catch! The defending (non-throwing) team may block a bounced ball once it hits the table, whereas tossed shots are indefensible.

  • Sinking Cups: A beer pong cup is "sunk" as soon as the ball touches the contents of the cup.

If a ball is spinning in the cup, you may attempt to blow it out before it touches the cups contents.

Warning: If the ball touches the contents and you blow it out, and it lands in another cup, both cups are considered sunk.

Any cup that is sunk must be immediately removed from the table and the defending team is responsible for drinking its contents. Team members alternate drinking.

Any cups accidentally knocked over are considered sunk.

  • Re-Racking: Although the cups begin in a pyramid, they don’t necessarily stay that way, as cups are removed.

A team is allowed to request a "re-rack" of the cups at the end of a turn, in order to maintain a compact shape.

Each team gets two re-racks per game, which can be used at any time. The standard beer pong rule is to take one re-rack with 6 cups remaining, and the other when 2 or 3 cups remain.

Suggested shapes include:
0

  • Game Ending Situations: When a team eliminates the last beer pong cup of their opposing team, they haven’t won yet. The defending team has a "redemption round" or "rebuttal round," where they are given two shots. Just as in a regular turn, if both shots are made in a row that team receives another turn and a chance to keep the game alive.

If a team hits the remaining cups during the redemption round, overtime is forced. If the team is not able to force the game into overtime, they lose and are responsible for drinking the contents of the remaining team’s cups in addition to their own remaining cup(s).

  • Overtime: Should the game be forced into overtime, each team sets up three cups in a triangle and fills them with beer. The team who hit the last cup to force the overtime shoots first.

Overtime is played like a normal game, and double or triple overtime may be necessary.

Root Beer Brewpubs

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

When a brewpub decides to expand its company to another location, it’s not always in that other location’s plan to include a beer brewing operation, as the owner of Moab Brewery in Utah has recently learned. But that didn’t stop him from opening a new brewpub. Instead, he just changed up which type of beer he’d be brewing.

John Borkoski, the owner of Moab Brewery, instead opened a root beer brewpub, and it seems to be gaining quite a bit of popularity! In fact, last year Ruby River Brewery’s "Ruby Root Beer" won a bronze Root Beer Making Kitmedal in a national beer competition (the gold and silver went to Anheuser-Busch). Fans of the sweet stuff tend to try local brews, just like beer lovers do, because each and every one has its own taste dimensions.

While you may not have a root beer brewpub locally, you can try brewing some of your own at home with our Root Beer Making Kit. Crisp, refreshing, old-fashioned root beer, freshly brewed at home… it may not be brewed by a professional brewpub, but when it’s this fresh and always on hand, it can’t be beat!
