I Wanna Be Like Oprah

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by William

Recently one of our customers ordered one of our Bent Handmade Glass Drinking Straws. Unfortunately, she returned it, saying that it should have come in a set of 4 and she wants the ones that Oprah has. Fair enough.

Handmade Glass Straw SetIt got me to thinking. First, we do offer glass straws in a set of 4, albeit not bent, but they’re at least worth a look. Secondly, wow, what it must be like to have folks wanting to be like YOU? (or in this case, Oprah).

Then I thought, hey, we deal with beer and adult drinks. What’s Oprah favorite? After endless hours of research, on the clock no doubt, I learned more about Oprah’s favorite things than any man should know.

For example, did you know she has a favorite bra? Do people really need to know this much about one person? Someone is getting themselves ready for Jeopardy – knowing a lot of useless facts. But hey, I digress!

If you wanna drink what Oprah does, well her is a recipe for here favorite Martini.

Oprah’s Favorite Pomegranate Martini
1 oz vodka
½oz Cointreau orange liqueur
3 oz pomegranate juice
Slice of lemon, for garnish

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker ¼-filled with chopped ice. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Serve with a slice of lemon as garnish.

And if our glass straws don’t suit you, try the stainless steel straws that Oprah is raving about.

As always, drink responsibly and furthermore, BE YOURSELF!

    That’s a horribly named beverage!

How is that a Martini at all? Just because it has Vodka and is served up? In honor of the popularity of Oprah, can we call it the Winfrey (Cocktail)?

For my taste, too little liquor to be served up.

  2. Hannah Says:

Derek – I feel the same as you :/ I’m always trying to be an advocate for REAL cocktails – you know, the classics…. and when I read this recipe that William submitted, all I could think was, how is this even a cocktail, let alone a martini?

I concur that we should just switch the name altogether!

  3. Brian O'Shea Says:

That is not even a Martini! This is what this blog has come to? Writing about Oprah? Are you trying to attract the beer accessory buying housewife? Come on guys…Oprah? Seriously?

That drink is not a Martini. Here is a Martini:
    THE MARTINI

    4 parts London dry gin
    1 part dry french vermouth
Combine ingredients in a pitcher with large ice and stir long and gently until frost appears on the outside. Strain into chilled cocktail glasses and garnish with one or three olives on a pick. With one olive, the pick may be omitted.

That’s it….Possibly the simplest, most elegant cocktail recipe there is. The resulting drink is complex, flavorful, and visually stunning in its elegant simplicity. There is a reason that this is the most popular cocktail in history.
Quality of gin in a Martini is of paramount importance.

  4. Hannah Says:

Brian – haha, thanks for the classic martini recipe – we’re true believers in traditional cocktails as well. When I read William’s post, I think he was trying to tell people that there’s more important things than being like Oprah, but that’s just my guess :)

  5. Brian O'Shea Says:

I think you are right Hannah. Upon reading the post again, I agree with you. I think that Willam was trying to be sarcastic, tongue in cheek.

  6. Hannah Says:

Indeed – I must say, Brian, it is so good to connect with other people who feel the same as us! And I’d also like to point out that the home bar you’re working on is quite stunning!

  7. Brian O'Shea Says:

Thank you very much! It is a work in progress, and I will be sure to update you guys as construction moves along. I am open to any suggestions and comments you and your co workers may have!
