Beer and Coffee and Really Tight Pants – A Dream Come True?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Now you can get wasted at Starbucks….ish. "Stealth" Starbucks are transforming shop under a new name starting in one of Seattle’s most Seattle-like areas of town, Capitol Hill (think super skinny pants on dudes, tight tees, and an intense level of west-coast relaxation that morphs into pretention). Starbucks wants to come off as more of a neighborhood joint. Hmmm… Starbucks….I think these no-joke-coffee-ers are gonna notice!

So why should you, awesome KegWorks blog reader, care? Well – these stealth Starbucks are serving beer! Oh yeah! And wine too. Having lived in Seattle, I know that in Seattle (and my world too) there is nothing holier than good coffee than good beer (Well, maybe Trader Joes…moment of silence). I think that the concept could do well in a town where a crazy night out could quite possibly involve a coffee shop.

What do you think? Is Starbucks a good place to get your swerve on?

Anyone Try Making the Melon Cocktail Keg Yet?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

After our Watermelon Cocktail Keg spot in the Food Network Magazine, quite a few of you picked up the faucet and shank kit, presumably to create your own.

Anyone out there actually try this yet? If you have, we’d love to hear how it went! If you have pics, send them along to blog@kegworks.com, and we’ll feature them in an upcoming post.

Cheers!

Ultimate Refreshment: The Mango Margarita

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Last weekend, during a stormy summer Saturday, we spent the afternoon driving around and doing all of the things we never want to do while it’s sunny out… we shopped, sold some old stuff, and finally ended up out for a late lunch. As luck would have it, there were two-for-one margaritas. We couldn’t have been more stoked.

Usually I order drinks in their natural form, but I was feeling a bit adventurous. When the option to try a mango margarita was presented, I had to take it. I love, love, love mango—it’s like velvet for your tongue—and I seriously enjoyed my mango margarita… so much, that I decided to share the recipe with you all.

You can enjoy this blended as well, but this recipe is on the rocks.

MangoMango Margarita
2 oz tequila of your choice
¾ oz Grand Marnier
1 oz mango nectar
¾ oz orange juice
¾ oz lime juice
1 tsp simple syrup
Slice of mango, for garnish
Sugar, for garnish

Rim your chilled margarita glass with sugar. Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until blended. Strain into the glass with a bit of crushed ice. Garnish with mango slice and enjoy!

Under the Influence

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

People are strange and sometimes their behavior can be even stranger when under the influence… At one point or another, we’ve all experienced the myriad of ways people can act when they’ve had just a little too much to drink. Some are mean, some are sorrowful, others are clever, funny and generous, while others simply love their life and are the life of the party. Still, there are others out there in the universe that we can’t really seem to classify… As an example, I stumbled across this in my morning Feeds:

Man uses beer to entice alleged burglar to leave

BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) – Police said a homeowner in Maine used a beer to entice an intoxicated intruder to leave. The intruder apparently didn’t realize that it was a nonalcoholic beer. Bar Harbor police said the homeowner awoke early Monday to find 22-year-old Scott Cote in the bedroom and used the beer to convince him to carry on.

Police said they found Cote breaking into cars a short time later and arrested him after he fled into some woods.

Police arrested Cote on charges of burglary, criminal mischief, operating a motor vehicle after revocation and violating the conditions of release.

Cote was returned to the Hancock County Jail after an initial appearance in court Tuesday. No lawyer has been assigned to represent him.

A Beer Recipe After My Own Heart

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Even though I’m only half German, my mother is 100%, through and through, so growing up I ate a ton of German-inspired foods… and loved every meal! When I saw this recipe on freep.com this morning, I simply had to share (and print it out for a meal myself!) I think my favorite thing about this recipe is that it uses not one, but two types of beer… and only takes 10 minutes to prep!

Beer-Braised Hot Dogs with Caramelized Onions and Sauerkraut

For the sauerkraut, you’ll need:

1 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced
Salt and pepper, to taste
3 cups refrigerated sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
½ cup dark beer (I suggest a Schwarzbier here, which is similar to a stout)
1 – 2 tbsp dark brown sugar

Sauerkraut Hot DogFor the hot dogs, you’ll need:

12 oz of cherry lambic
2 tbsp sugar
6 hot dogs (all beef are best)
6 hot dog buns
Mustard, if you like

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until dark golden brown. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, in a separate heavy skillet, simmer the sauerkraut, beer and 1 to 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar (to taste) over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Season with pepper.

To prepare the hot dogs, preheat or prepare the grill.

Bring beer and sugar to simmer in medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add hot dogs; simmer until hot dogs plump and beer syrup coats lightly, about 8 minutes. Transfer dogs to grill; reserve syrup. Top each bun with grilled hot dog, caramelized onions and sauerkraut. Drizzle with reserved beer syrup. Serve with mustard, if you like.

For nutritional info, see the recipe at freep.com.

Cheers!
