Keg Couplers from Times Past

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I may be young but even I was treated to the knowledge that kegs looked different in days past. I remember cartoons and movies that would show barrel kegs with not one hole, at the top, but two holes instead—one for the CO2 to go in, and one for the beer to come out.

Now, it’s not that such kegs aren’t used anymore—every so often you’ll run into one—but the couplers that tap such kegs aren’t made anymore, so getting your hands on them can sometimes prove difficult. Homebrewers know this better than anyone.

Golden Gate Keg Couplers may be hard to find, but not impossible… especially now that we’ve got our hands on some! Sought after by homebrewers using Golden Gate style kegs for their beer, these couplers are no longer even manufactured anymore. You can only find them used, but we promise, ours are in good working condition.

Beer Laced with Wine? I’m not sold.

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Straight out of Spain, the same country that brought us the porron (an entirely different way to imbibe in vino), comes the first beer actually laced with wine.

According to the above linked article from the Chicago Tribune, the makers of Inedit wine-beer, Estrella Damm, developed this brew because of "the belief that there was a need for a beer that could complement a dining experience."

… I don’t know about you, but I find a plethora of amazing beers—without wine added— that compliment my meals. Case in point: my grilled foods and beer pairing list. In my honest opinion, as a beer, liquor and wine drinker, I think they might be pushing it here.

What do you think?

Kid Rock’s AMERICAN BADASS BEER is Ready to Rock

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

A lot of patriotic things happen on the 4th of July. This year, those things included brewing and filling kegs for the launch of Kid Rock’s "American Badass Beer" Redneck Lager.

Get ready Detroit! The first 300 kegs will be sold at Kid Rock’s Comerica Park concerts this weekend. The beer will be available at kiosks within the park during the shows. After the concerts, a newly formed sales team will begin selecting distributors and filling orders in the Michigan market. First come the kegs, followed by 12-ounce and 22-ounce bottles.

Almost a year ago we blogged about this beer and even initiated a label contest. Although we had some great entries, Mr. Bawitdaba (whatever that means) decided to go with this one:

Kid Rock American Badass Redneck Lager

Apparently the production of this beer will create nearly 400 jobs, most of which will be at Michigan Brewing. The brewery won the contract from Drink Americas Holdings, Inc. and got an estimated tax break of more than $700k to develop the product.

Drink Americas official website, claims it "formed a joint venture with Universal Music’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records to develop and market iconic beverage products." Interestingly enough, the company is also working with Dr. Dre on new product lines: cognac and sparkling vodka. How fitting!

I’m not going to lie; I will try Kid Rock’s Beer just as soon as the opportunity presents itself. I sincerely doubt it’ll be an "All Summer Long" (I’m so clever) beer however. I’m thinking that many (like myself) will buy it as a one-off… just to say they tried it. Who knows, maybe between die-hard Kid Rock fans and proud Rednecks there will be enough of a market to keep this brew alive. This is America, after all!

Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters has Arrived!

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Fee Aztec Chocolate BittersUnveiled late last week at Tails of the Cocktail 2009 is Fee Brothers’ newest bitters creation – Aztec Chocolate Bitters – a sublime blend of bittersweet chocolate and a hint of spicy heat. This bitters can heighten your experience in almost any cocktail, especially those based on dark spirits, like rum or whiskey. A must-have new bitters for any bartender, mixologist or cocktail connoisseur.

I’m a firm believer that chocolate can and should be enjoyed all throughout the year, but after tasting this bitters, thoughts of warm (read: not straight up or on the rocks), bourbon-based cocktails filled my head—all the types of cocktails I love to imbibe in during fall and winter. And so I bring you…

Bittersweet Autumn
1½ oz bourbon (I suggest Makers or, for a sweeter drink, Basil Hayden’s)
¾ oz sweet vermouth
¾ oz Campari
2 dashes Aztec Chocolate Bitters
Whiskey-soaked cherry, for garnish

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir. Serve in a martini glass, garnished with a drunken cherry. Enjoy!

Now, I’m sure that all of you creative types can come up with a slew of other ways to enjoy Fee Brothers newest bitters. When you do, make sure to tell us all about it so we can try your concoctions too.

Cheers!

Duvel Green

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Last night, David and I took the opportunity to drink Duvel’s new draft product Duvel Green at Coles Bar and Restaurant. We had great time and both us enjoyed the new draft. I must admit that I really enjoy Duvel and have put back quite a few bottles of it in my time, so I was quite excited to try the new draft offering.

Duvel Green

Duvel Green is a lighter, lower alcohol, draft version of regular bottled Duvel. The first thing I noticed when the beer was poured was the white, foamy head billowing up out of the signature Duvel glass. The beer under the beautiful cumulus head was a bright golden yellow. Green has a nice, lively mouth feel that was a little more prickly on the tongue than original Duvel. The biggest difference I noticed was that the spicy hops taste from the Saaz and Styrian noble hops was much more pronounced than I expected it would be. This larger hops taste comes from Green being single fermented versus the triple fermentation and aging process used in creating bottled Duvel, which allows the hops to mellow as the beer matures. All these nuances were explained to Dave and me as we sipped away on the Green by the very knowledgeable and friendly Tori, from Brewery Ommegang, which is owned by Duvel. If you’re interested, Beer Advocate has a great interview with Michel Moortgat, the CEO of Duvel Moortgat Breweries, explaining the process used to create Duvel Green.

Overall, I found it to be a great new beer, perfect for a whiling away a summer afternoon on a shady patio with friends. It is crisp and refreshing and, at 6.8% alcohol, it’s a better session beer than its bottled cousin at 8.5%. And Tori, if you are reading this, Dave apologizes again for having a Chimay.
