Das Beer Boot!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Oktoberfest is well underway, with festivities running through October 4th. Even if you’re not in Germany for the celebration, you can still enjoy your own at home… especially if you’ve got Das Beer Boot, a 2-liter (read 67-ounce) glass stein, shaped like a boot. That’s right, a boot.

Das Beer Boot is imported from Europe and weighs in at an astounding 8-pounds when filled up with your favorite brew… this is one stein you surely need to grab with two hands (at least until you’ve sipped a bit down).

Looking for some great Oktoberfest beers to enjoy in your 2-liter beer boot? Check out Deron’s Top 5 Oktoberfest/Märzen brews.

Das Beer Boot 2-liter Stein

Or maybe you think 2 liters is pushing it? While we may not agree, we do offer a 1-liter beer boot stein which might just fit the bill. Either way, cheers to rich, toasty, full-bodied Märzen beer and to Oktoberfest celebrations everywhere!

How to Brew Beer in a Coffee Maker

Brew Beer in a Coffee Maker
Image from allboutbeer.com

I never would’ve even thought of brewing beer in a coffee maker until I found this article. What a great idea! The process of brewing coffee is very similar to the way beer is brewed. This mini-homebrew recipe below only produces a small batch of beer, but very worth it since you most likely have most of these supplies in your kitchen already!

You need the following equipment:

A standard electric drip coffee maker (with water heating compartment and hot plate)
A wooden rolling pin
1 coffee filter
A saucepan, larger than 2 quarts
2 1-quart canning jars with lids
2 6-inch squares of cheesecloth
2 rubber bands
½ gallon filtered water (not distilled)

Ingredients from homebrew supply store:

1¼ cups malted barley (or can use base malt)
5 to 7 hop pellets
½ packet of champagne yeast (or can use baker’s yeast)

Malted barley acts as the sugar content for fermentation. The hops will help preserve the beer and give it added flavor. Make sure you clean everything thoroughly before starting, because any kind of small residue can affect the process.

Directions:

Start with the 1¼ cups malted barley. Take the rolling pin and roll gently just to crack the grains, but don’t over roll to get the consistency of flour. Place the grains in the coffee pot. Put 2 cups of filtered water into the coffee machine and turn it on. The hot plate and water-heating chamber with temperatures of 170°F and 150°F are perfect temperatures for brewing. Then wait for the coffee maker to brew for about an hour before it shuts off. The coffee maker will break down the grains and complex sugars into fermentable sugars.

Strain the liquid through the coffee filter and put the filter full of grain into the filter basket. Pour the strained liquid back into the water-heating chamber. Add 1 of cup water to the strained liquid in the chamber and start the coffee machine again. After the liquid flows into the coffee pot, turn off the machine and pour the liquid back into the chamber. Repeat 5 times, adding another cup of water each time. Keep an eye on the coffee maker through this "lautering process." This is where the hot water washes over the grain extracting the sugars.

The liquid that comes out is called "wort," or sweet liquor. Place the wort in a saucepan and when it comes to a rolling boil, add 5 to 7 pellets of hops. Boil for an additional 30 minutes, then turn off the burner. Stir until mixed then pour the wort into the canning jar. Pour down the side of the jar without splashing to keep all the ingredients contained. Next, place the jar into the sink filled with cold water. When the temperature reaches 60-70°F, screw on the top of the jar and shake vigorously. Take off the top and add yeast.

Put a piece of cheesecloth over the top of the jar and secure it with a rubbed band. Place jar in a cool, dark place and the liquor will become beer in 5-7 days.

If you try brewing beer in your coffee maker let us know how it turns out! This is a great way to learn and understand the process of how beer is made. I simplified the instructions above; for more details read the article. Now this is a long process that is time consuming and you will only have created a small amount of beer. This process will be fun to try, however if you’re really serious about making beer, I would check out our complete Cooper’s Complete Homebrew Kits and our Mr. Beer Complete Beer Making Kits.

Try it…Cheers!

Are You a Beer Snob Too?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I attended the Buffalo Sabres’ first preseason game last week. Before the game I enjoyed a few microbrews on draft at Pearl Street Grill and Brewery across the street from the HSBC Area. Once I arrived at the game however, I realized that I my draft options consisted of Bud Light and Labatt Blue. Even though I knew the answer already, I asked "do you have anything light on tap, besides the Bud Light?"

As the bartender shot down my hopes for another option, an acquaintance I was with asked me, "what’s wrong with Bud Light?"

I instinctively thought "what’s NOT wrong with Bud Light?" and subsequently realized that I have officially become a beer snob.

The Subtle Art of beer SnobberyToday, I came across a hilarious article titled "The Subtle Art of Beer Snobbery" on the Modern Drunkard site and I feel compelled to share.

Not only is it funny, it’s kind of true! Check out an excerpt below on types of beer snobs or read the whole thing here.

Types of Beer Snobs

Deciding you want to be a beer snob is not enough. You also have to decide what sort of beer snob you want to be.

1. The Beer Fuehrer
This curmudgeonly gentleman will declare he would rather guzzle urine than drink what he considers "bad beer." And by bad he means any beer that comes in a can, has commercials on television, or has been heard of by more than fifty people. He can only pity the poor fools who sit in bars drinking the swill disgorged by the vast corporate vats, when they could be drinking swill produced in much smaller ones.

2. The Hops Head
The power-crazed Dr. Frankenstein of beer snobs, this wretched soul has descended so deeply into the pit of snobbery he has convinced himself that the vile liquid (he will call it something akin to Super Duper Black Cherry Berry Power Porter) he concocted in his basement is not only non-poisonous, but superior to the stuff it took monks 50 generations to perfect. One caveat: the longer and more grandiose the title of his obscene creation, the more likely it will be good for poisoning the rats in your cellar.

3. The Beer Geek
The beer world equivalent of a Trekkie, this fan is forever making pilgrimages to far flung festivals and conventions, will belong to any number of beer associations (and wears the T-shirts to prove it) and has never had sex with a woman where there wasn’t money involved. Beards are common and they have a powerful fetish for steins.

4. The Beer Lover
These are the Rex Reeds of the beer snob community. They have never met a beer that was not "gorgeously fabulous" or "fabulously gorgeous." The closest they ever come to a bad review is when they mistake the glass of water used to clear the palate for beer, and even then they’ll give it three stars and declare it "a promising new light lager worth keeping your eye on."

I’d classify myself as a Beer Fuehrer… what kind of beer snob are you?
