Top 5 Scotch Ales

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Recently in my Top 5 picks, I’ve been focusing on lighter, more seasonal beers. Now that we’re beginning the descent into the Fall season, my favorite time of year, I thought it would be the perfect time to focus on one of my very favorite styles of beer.

The History of Scotch Ale

Meantime Scotch AleScotch Ale, also known as Strong Scotch Ale or Wee Heavy, is at the top end of the spectrum for the style, being the strongest, maltiest, darkest, and I feel most delicious of the Scotch Ale family. They’re fermented at cooler temperatures than most ales, and combined with going through a long boil in the kettle, they produce clean, intense malt flavors that are sweeter, fuller-bodied, and of course higher in alcohol than their lighter brothers and sisters. They’re actually a very accurate representation of their indigenous ingredients and the region. Hops traditionally are not native to Scotland, and especially back in the day were expensive to import, hence the focus on malt being the big star in these beers. Instead of using hops, brewers focused on herbs, spices, and roots to balance out all the sweetness.

Characteristics of Scotch Ale

Most Scotch Ales are light copper to dark brown in color, often with deep garnet highlights, with a thick tan head that may quickly dissipate in higher strength versions. Malt lovers, this style should be at the top of your list. Roasted, caramel malt is the dominant trait, with some nuttiness that may last well into the finish. Like I said, hop flavor will be at a minimum, and alcohol warmth is present a lot of the time. Like some other styles, there’s a bit of what I like to call a fruit basket flavor going on, with plums, raisins, and dried fruit being very noticeable. They’re full-bodied beers, thick and chewy, with moderate carbonation, and some versions are dangerously drinkable.

Scotch Ale and Food Pairings

Scotch Ale is another very versatile beer for pairing with food. Roasted meats are the first to come to mind, and game is another winner with this style, especially pheasant, quail, partridge, and venison. Sausage, meatloaf, pork, and basically any roasted meat are also great to pair with these beers. Desserts are also a great match, especially shortbread, creamy puddings, and creme brulee. One thing that should be noted is to avoid pairing this style with spicy foods the lack of hops wont give them the power to stand up to the heat.

Top 5 Scotch Ales

This was a tough Top 5 for me to pick, primarily because its one of my favorite styles, and there are thankfully numerous commercial examples widely available that are very unique in their own way, so the competition is tough. Now that we have some evenings that have a bit of a chill in the air, these are some great ones to enjoy during those last few nights you can squeeze in on the back patio. Cheers!

Binge Drinking Gives You a Bigger Beer Belly

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

In my internet travels I came across this article that claims that men who binge drink have a waist size 2.3 inches bigger than men who drink the same amount of alcohol but spread out their consumption.

Beer BellyBritish researchers found that the pattern of drinking, rather than the total amount of alcohol consumed has a greater effect on waist size. For example, drinking a bottle of wine or five pints of beer in one evening will pack on more pounds than drinking that same amount over the course of a week.

For women these findings are even more alarming, with binge drinkers having a waist four inches bigger than non-bingers. There was no considerable difference in overall body weight between the bingers and non-bingers studied, to prove that the effect was not due to the bingers being heavier in general.

So what exactly constitutes "binging?" In this study, binge drinkers were identified as consuming 10 to 12 units of alcohol – the equivalent of a bottle of wine or five pints of beer – in one sitting at least once a month.

These findings are significant, as abdominal fat is known to be more dangerous for the heart than fat carried elsewhere and it’s also linked to diabetes and heart disease.

Personally, I find this information to be important but I can’t say it’s all too shocking. As I get older, I enjoy my beer (and wine) for taste and I have no problem spreading out my weekly consumption. It’s cheaper, healthier and there’s no headache to deal with in the morning!

Like It In The Can?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Budweiser does it again, this time with Bud Light Lime:

Somehow this beer giant always figures out a way to make us laugh and promote their wares at the same time. Cheers to good marketing (whether I’d take it in the can or not) :)

Stone Brewing Company Makes Top Chef

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I’m not a big TV junkie but I have a soft spot for cooking shows and I must admit, I really enjoy Top Chef. The show is a fantastic mix of food, drama, and classic product placement. It’s not difficult to see who the affiliates are. Glad, GE and Whole Foods make regular appearances.

Last season took place in NYC and they used some local products on the show, one of them being Brooklyn Beer. As the contestants waited in the "stew room" to confront the judges, they were served bottles of Brooklyn.

Stone Brewing Company Imperial PintThis year, the show is set in Los Angeles and they will be featuring beers from one of my personal favorites, Stone Brewing Company. Chris Cochran, the marketing coordinator of Stone explained, "Someone on the crew worked at a bar in New York City called Blind Tiger Ale House was familiar with our beers, and asked us if we could supply them with beer. A total no-brainer."

According to an article in Product Placement News, this is not the first time that Stone Beer has been featured. The craft beer has also made its way onto shows like Weeds and West Wing. If you ask me though, its biggest credit to date is still the movie Old School.

If you haven’t tried anything from Stone yet, you should get on that. Arrogant Bastard Ale seems to be their claim to fame and it’s always delicious. Today, September 9th, they’re releasing the Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic Ale series – it’s flavored with tangerine peel and chocolate malt aged in French Oak to enhance the vanilla flavors. I can’t even think about it without drooling.

If you’re already one of Stone Brewing Company’s biggest fans, we’ve got plenty of opportunities for you to give them product placement in your life. My personal favorites are the Stone Brewing Company Imperial Pint Glass and the oh so adorable "My Daddy Is An Arrogant Bastard" Onesie for baby.

Cheers to good television and even better beer.

2 New Bar Trends: Flask Service and Keg Service

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Upon walking into KegWorks this morning, Dave tuned me into two possible new bar trends; flask service and keg service.

Flask Service
Dubbed by Dave as "the poor man’s bottle service," flask service would provide Kegerator Serviceto your table 6 or so generous drinks of the liquor of your choice, along with carafes of select mixers and an array of garnishes. Guests enjoying flask service would have the decanter at their table, cutting down trips to the bar and creating a more relaxed, pleasant experience overall.

Keg Service
If beer is more your bag but a pitcher simply won’t cover your bases, keg service might be just the thing for you. Dave envisions keg service for parties of 8 or more; the server would roll the kegerator right out to the table and the guests would not only have crisp, fresh beer at their disposal but also enjoy the novelty of pouring their own pints from the tap… and less frequent trips to the bar, again, is always a plus.

Know of any bars or restaurants offering such services? Tell us about them!

Golfing While Drinking

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Portable Golf Cooler I have recently taken up golfing and I am in love with it! I can’t get enough, but it is a bit expensive. Did you ever go to the course and try to buy beer? Way more pricey than if you bring your own.

I recently came across this funny article about golfing and drinking; check it out for a laugh. Also, to help you out we have a great portable golf cooler that is perfect for bringing your own beverages to the course!

Looking for more great drinking gear for the golf links? Find all that and more at KegWorks.

So get out there and enjoy some golfing and drinking but please be responsible. You may golf a bit better when relaxed with a few drinks, but way worse if you drink to excess.

Follow-up: What Makes a Manly Cocktail

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Well, thanks for the helpful hints on my last post. I ended up trying out a couple of these drinks and found that it is the company that you keep that makes it a manly drink.

Some of the more sophisticated guests thought that a dirty martini at a grand art deco ballroom was absolutely "dapper." However, a few blue collar friends of mine wouldn’t let it go until I had a beer in my hand. Guess it pays to know your audience.

Say NO to Ridiculous Drinks!Looking for a great Dirty Martini recipe? Look no further.

Dirty Martini
3 oz vodka
1 oz dry vermouth
½ oz olive brine
Olives, for garnish

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker half-filled with cracked ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with an olive, and serve.
