FOOTBALL!

Friday, September 4th, 2009

I can barely contain myself. Seriously. I’m practically foaming at the mouth. If I were a raccoon, they would probably feel the need to put me down, solely for the safety of others. In fact, that might not be a bad idea anyway—starting next weekend, anyone and everyone is subject to the possibility of being positively pummeled by yours truly, all in the name of football.

I may be a pint-sized chick but I dare you to even try to avoid me in a tackle. Go on, just try. I’ll even give you a fighting chance; when you hear the word "FOOTBALL!" bellowing out of my little lungs, you have .5 seconds to duck the attack or brace yourself. No one has ever been able to evade it, so I suggest that latter.

Yes… regular season NFL football begins next weekend and I couldn’t be more excited. And working for a place like KegWorks, I can’t even find reprieve at work. Whether I’m working on tailgating graphics, emails, or simply in convo with one of the boys, football is everywhere I turn. I’m a ticking time bomb. The fuse is lit, and by next Sunday, I’m going to blow.

If you love football even half as much as I do, you’re a pretty big fan. Fans like us need to tailgate. Tailgating like ours is pretty serious – think Bills fan serious (yes, I am a Bills fan by birth and it shows). This means Buffalo chicken wings, cold, crisp beer on tap and plenty of drink-oriented games to keep us entertained in the stadium parking lot from 7am until the main event… or craziness like this ensues:

Don’t let tailgating-gone-wrong (albeit hysterical) happen to you! Stock up on tailgating supplies now, whether you watch the game at the stadium, at home, a bar or wherever. You owe it to yourself, your team and NFL fans everywhere!

3… 2… 1… FOOTBAAAAALLLLLL!!!

The Manhattan Cocktail Classic – Fall Preview

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Move over Tales of the Cocktail, there’s a new kid in town.

I couldn’t help but get excited when I heard about New York City’s first ever multi-day cocktail extravaganza. Planned for the weekend of October 3rd and 4th, the Manhattan Cocktail Classic 2009 Fall Preview is slated to feature a range of educational seminars. Taking place at Astor Center (located on Lafayette and East 4th Street) and inside a handful of the best cocktail bars, events will include an ultimate crash course in Cognac, panel discussions on agave-based spirits, a look into the city’s cocktail history and so much more. The best part is, it’s just a preview of what’s being planned for the first big annual event in celebration of World Cocktail Week in May.

Gourmet Cocktail Mixers

New York’s greatest bartenders will be on hand crafting incredible cocktails all weekend long and you’ll have a chance to experience some of the most celebrated cocktail establishments in the world. Presenters include the likes of Dale DeGroff, Gary Regan, Dave Wondrich, Paul Pacult, Audrey Saunders and Steve Olson.

I’m sensing that the weekend will be part conference, part festival and a damn good time. Tickets are rumored to go on sale sometime around Labor Day and I believe you can buy them for individual sessions if you’d like. I’d imagine they’re going to sell out fast.

So, who’s behind this mother of all cocktail parties? Just thirteen of the world’s greatest bartenders, bar owners, writers, educators, critics, consultants and ambassadors. Trust me, they’re all people you’d be privileged to share a drink with. Learn more about them here.

Can’t wait until October? Stock up on incredible cocktail ingredients, make something spectacular and propose a toast to the finer things in life!

What Makes a Manly Cocktail: Part 2

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

This week Liz sent me an article on drinking manly drinks. Well maybe not just about manly drinks, but about how your grandmother probably drinks better than you do. This got me thinking about the wedding I’m going to this weekend. How can I possibly order a drink at a fancy establishment without Fever Tree Tonic Waterseeming like I’m either not cultured or not manly enough. I’ve always liked a good microbrew, but I’m less adept at ordering cocktails. I’ve tried a few things out with some fantastic tonics and ginger beers, but I’m really trying to branch out and try something new. A few suggestions have been to

  • Try something with rye
  • Dark and Stormy
  • Just a plain martini
  • Manhattan
  • Just get a beer and get over it

Let me know what you guys think, so I don’t look like an idiot this weekend.

Thanks.

Summer is Still Sizzling. Celebrate with a Mai Tai!

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Mai Tai is a popular cocktail that was invented at Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California back in 1944. "Maita’i" is the Tahitian word for "good." The story goes, that one evening while Trader Vic was entertaining his friends from Tahiti he created the Mai Tai. The Mai Tai cocktail is fantastic and simple to create.

Mai Tai
1 oz dark rum
1 oz light rum
1 oz triple sec
½ oz lime juice
½ oz grenadine
½ oz orgeat syrup
Pineapple wedge, for garnish
Cherry, for garnish

Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Shake well with ice and strain into an old fashioned or highball glass over ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry.

Make other cocktails from our featured recipes on the blog!

Enjoy!

Top Fantasy Draft Picks

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

OK it’s that time of the season where men are looking for ways to get away and study up for, arguably, what will be the most important thing in their lives for the next 4 months.

FANTASY FOOTBALL!

Just last night me and several guys from our league met up to do our draft order. It got me to thinking, what are some of KegWorks top fantasy draft picks?

What would you select if you had the 1st pick?

For me it would be our Glastender Triple Tap Keg Refrigerator. Having 3 beers on tap, at home, eliminates any reason to go out for the game.

My 2nd pick would be the Countertop Pizza Oven. Going to need something to eat while drinking all that beer!

Side Bar Electronic Liquor Dispenser3rd pick would be the John Boos Cucina Grandé Kitchen Worktable. Gotta have a place to set the oven!

4th pick would be our SideBar Electronic Beverage Dispensing System. I think this is such a cool product. You can have your favorite cocktail ingredients flow like water at the touch of a button.

And for my 5th pick I’d choose our Scandinavia Beer Mugs with Free Personalization. I’d have my favorite teams boldly displayed on them and make all visiting fans drink from them.

One thing I did forget to mention is all this would go into my man cave, also known as the basement. That way I would not have to come up until the season is over.

Hey Mr. KegWorks, can I work from home until, lets say, first week in February?

The Root of All Deliciousness

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The wait is finally over. After what seemed to be an eternity, the bottle of Root I ordered nearly 2 weeks ago arrived yesterday afternoon (Woohoo!) …and I’m here to tell you, it’s worth every single highly-anticipated second of that wait time. In fact, I cracked it open just as soon as I got home last night.

Root LiquorIt’s probably because I’ve always had an affinity for the smell and taste of Root Beer that explains the excitement with which I opened this handsome bottle of liquor. Something about the smell of root-anything reminds me of the summer trips of my childhood to North Carolina, visiting my extended family and sitting out on the front porch looking up at the stars. Even now, during the occasional walk past the Home Brew section in our warehouse, I catch a whiff of our Root Beer Making Kits and it sends me back to those warm, homely thoughts of childhood summers.

Produced by Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (Art in the Age for short), Root takes us back to the pre-Temperance Era before Root Tea became the soft drink Root Beer that we know nowadays. That is, this baby’s got alcohol.

Root LiquorAt 80 Proof, this deep reddish-brown, caramel colored liquor has a smooth flavor – just as root beer would (and should) if it had a kick. It is a well-balanced blend of natural herbs, spices and alcohol – without being overly herbal or overly boozy. Best of all, it leaves a wonderful after taste that is somewhat spicy, yet totally refreshing and very much root beer-like. Even the bottle seems to throw back to its days as an herbal remedy – which was Root Tea’s original, native purpose.

Popping the cork, the blended aroma of anise, cloves, orange and lemon peel, birch, cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon wafted from the bottle. A wayward drop of Root soared into the air and came to rest on my finger, giving me my first taste ever… Delicious!

Nothing about Root, its flavor, packaging, or promotion says "pretense." Nor does it reek of effort – which is always a good thing in my book. Overall, this is pretty much a low-profile liquor that deserves every bit of the attention and spotlight it gets – and more.

If you’re lucky enough to have a liquor store near you that carries Root, I recommend you pick it up; otherwise, you’ll have to order it. See Art in the Age’s website for details.
