Plucked From the Vodka Tree

Vodka!!!

Around the office I think everyone knows how I feel about my vodka, even wrote a blog post about it.

And now I’ve found a Vodka Bar. Nice cozy lil spot in the Allentown area of good old Buffalo, called Scarlet.

They actually have a Vodka Tree! Now when I first saw these small vines growing up the wall behind the bar I thought, hey that’s cool. And me being nosy, just had to ask what it was all about. So the owner tells me that’s just his unique way to display different vodkas. And this bar has over 50.

Premium Vodkas

Wanting to act like a big shot, I asked for a shot from the top of the tree. One would think the best would be at the top, right. Well not at Scarlet’s! Even if you ask for their best vodka, you will get 3 to 4 different opinions.

I ended up trying about 4 different brands from 360 to Bong to Tito’s. But my favorite was ICE Vodka. Right away you can tell just from the bottle, it’s different. The bottle was as thick as glass block windows with a tint. This vodka is being pitched as filtered 10 times through activated carbon and diamonds. Yes, diamonds. Not sure how the hell diamonds would effect anything during the filtration process, but I can tell you this. It was the best damn vodka I ever tasted in my life. Dangerous how easy it goes down. I didn’t even know it was vodka, really!

If you’re like me, not only do you judge vodka by how it goes down, but also by how you feel the next morning. If I wake up and I’m good, the vodka was good. We won’t go into how many I had that night, but I woke up and made it to work with my normal morning crankiness. No ill effects from the previous night indulgence.

I searched the internet for this newly found treasure, only to learn that it will not be available to consumers until 2010. Doesn’t even say when in 2010? How they gonna tease a brotha and leave him hanging? That’s not right at all.

Hey if anyone out there finds it hit me up here at KegWorks (877 636 3673), and ask for Will. Hey maybe I’ll come have a drink witcha. In the meantime, you can find me at Scarlet. They have ½ price specials on Tuesdays and Jazz on Wednesdays.

Boss Man, need more PTO.

New Draft Beer Faucet Caps Keep Taps Clean Too!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Honestly. Are you still blocking your draft beer faucets from fruit fly intruders with crumpled-up paper towels? Really? Is that why the pint you poured me has pieces of beer-soaked paper floating in it? Ewe. Not acceptable, especially with all of the low-cost faucet caps out there these days. In fact, now we can do you one better than even a straight-up, simple faucet cap!

Introducing the Kleen-Plug Faucet Cap with Brush, which not only keeps your beer faucet and hose free of bugs, flies and the like, but even prevents sediment and yeast from building up in your tap. What does that mean to you? Better tasting, fresher beer! Plus, it’s designed to fit all tap sizes, from domestic to European.

The Kleen-Plug Tap Cap is yours for just $3.75.

Men’s Journal Names America’s 25 Best Beers (and does a great job doing so)

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Now that I’m an official beer snob, I tend to be quite critical of others’ judgment calls – especially when it comes to judging craft brews. In true beer snob fashion, I assume that 95% (if not more) of the general public has no idea what makes a beer "good" and they wouldn’t know actually know a high-quality ale or lager if it fell from the sky and hit them over the head.

Mens Journal Lists 25 Best American BeersMen’s Journal ran an article on October 5th titled "America’s Best Beers" and I must admit authors Christian DeBenedetti and Seth Fletcher did a fantastic job compiling an impressive list.

I was glad to see that Stone Brewery’s Levitation Ale, Flying Fish Exit 4, Victory Prima Pils and Dogfish Head Squall IPA made the cut. In fact, several of my favorites made their top 15 and based on their proven impeccable taste, I can’t wait to try the others that I haven’t yet had the opportunity to enjoy – and I stress the "yet."

The guys broke things down into categories, choosing three of their favorite lagers, ales, dark beers and Belgian styled brews, plus three that they deemed "best cutting edge."

An additional 10 beers are mentioned in the article Top Five Beer Towns in the U.S., published the same day.
(In case you were wondering it was San Diego, NYC, Portland (OR), Philadelphia and Chicago that made that list).

Check them out, tell us if there’s a brew you wish had been included and let us know what YOU think!

Clever Jamieson Brewery Gets an Earful From Disney.

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Ho White Raspberry AleA small brewery in Australia has run afoul of a very large entertainment company with their "Ho White" ad campaign for their Raspberry Ale.

The brewery is Jamieson and the entertainment giant (in case you did not guess it by the campaign title) is Disney. Although neither company seems to have much to say about the matter, all links to the online campaign are now dead. Personally, I think the campaign is clever and amusing with tag line "anything but sweet," trying to show that Jamieson’s Rasberry Ale is a real beer, not a sugary sweet alcopop, by portraying a Snow White like character smoking in bed with seven debauched dwarves.

As amusing as I find this ad, the company who made it really should have known better than to poke the bear that is Disney. But then again, if they did not I would not be blogging about a small Australian brewery that otherwise would never come to my attention. What do you think?

Rock Art Brewery VermonsterSheesh. Can’t the craft breweries get a break?

Deron sent me this article last night from NACS Online. Apparently Hansen Beverage Co., the manufacturer of Monster Energy Drinks, has ordered a small craft brewery out of Vermont to stop promoting and selling their Vermonster craft brew, all because of the word "monster" being in the beer’s name.

Rock Art Brewery has been making and selling their Vermonster brew since 2007, and now all of a sudden, Hansen Beverage Co. fears that this particular beer will confuse customers and dilute their own Monster Energy brand. Really? Beverage companies can’t even use the word "monster" anymore? Who’s next – think they’ll target Brooklyn Brewery for their Monster Ale, too?

How long until no word is left without a trademark?

Comfort Food in Western New York

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Cabbage Shredder for SauerkrautFall brings with it an icy chill in Western New York and here we need some comfort foods to get through the frigid winter. One of my favorite winter dishes is kielbasa and sauerkraut, a perfect mix of warmth and cholesterol to keep your blood from freezing on that first cold snap.

It’s always the best with fresh ingredients and it’s really easy to do with a cabbage shredder, for the freshest sauerkraut around. I also recommend onions and apples and the whole mess in a crockpot, simmering all day long.

Finish it off with a doppelbock (I’m a big fan of the Troegenator) and you’ve got at least a couple of warm hours in you, before you have to shovel the driveway… nice.
