Glogg: ‘Tis the Season to Enjoy Mulled Wines

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Mulled wines for the holidays… Nothing like kicking back with a few friends and enjoying a warm spiced beverage, even in this fairly mild winter season so far. Mulled wines have been around since at least medieval times and were called Hipocris (after Hippocrates the physician) because people believed that they had special health properties. During a time when water wasn’t as sanitary as wine, these drinks may have in fact kept people alive through the winter by keeping them warm and bacteria free.

Glogg Hot Spiced WineLater on mulled wine transformed in Europe by adding raisins and almonds. This new drink was typically higher in sugar and alcoholic content and was called "Gluwein" the precursor to today’s popular drink, Glogg.

Today we can enjoy these in our forced air "castles" in a much more sanitary time, but I urge you to huddle around your gas fireplace and drink this wonderful spiced drink with friends by firelight. Enjoy the past you’ve had with them and the blessings of the year. Most of all, enjoy the bouquet of flavor that comes with a drink served in this season alone.

Wapawhattie? Wapatoolie!

Friday, November 27th, 2009

My sophomore year of college, I’d moved out of the dorms and into an off-campus house with five other girls. Unsure of how often I’d be eating at school, I advised my parents to sign me up for the Flex meal plan. Instead of a certain number of dining hall meals, I had a flat $600 to spend at any campus eatery. My student ID card functioned as a debit system and I only paid for what I ate. As it turned out, I didn’t eat on campus very often. By the end of the first semester, I’d only spent $100.

This wouldn’t have been a bad thing, except my parents had already paid my tuition bill for second semester without examining the charges. They had unknowingly added an additional $600 to my flex food plan and I didn’t realize this oversight until after it was too late to make changes. So, there I was with over $1000 of non-refundable cash that could only be spent on college campus food.

My darling mother informed me that there would be serious consequences if I didn’t "eat every damn meal on campus" and spend "every damn cent of that money" so I decided to get creative. One of my roommates had returned from a trip home raving about Wapatoolie (also known as Wapatuli/Wapatoola) that she’d had at a party. None of us in Buffalo had ever heard of this drink, so she explained that "Wapatoolie" is simply the proper name for a whole ton of bite size fruit pieces soaked in booze.

Wapatoolie Liquor Soaked FruitIt sounded pretty delicious to me, so we set out on a mission. For a week straight I bought every overpriced fruit cup that the school’s dining service made. We scheduled a party, dumped all of our succulent fruit into giant buckets, then added generous amounts of rum, vodka, whiskey and gin (it’s really too bad I couldn’t buy those on campus too.) The fruit marinated for two days and we couldn’t have been happier with the results. The Wapatoolie was tasty and boy was it potent. I must say – the fruit pieces make it a much better mixture than its amateur cousin, Jungle Juice (and it’s quite a bit classier too.)

While home for Thanksgiving last week, I shared this story with my mom as we discussed punch options for the next holiday party. Although she was less than thrilled to hear the details of how I went about spending my extra food money, she did agree to make a less lethal version of Wapatoolie for the next family get together.

As we get into party season, I’d suggest that you do the same. Everyone loves fresh fruit and when you add alcohol, it’s even better! I recommend using fresh pineapple, apples, oranges, melons, grapes and berries with vodka. Make sure you let it soak overnight. Yum!

Eat Too Much Turkey to Beat the Black Friday Mall-Goers?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Who wants to get up at 4am, stand in line with tons of folk you don’t know and make a mad rush to the door of some packed store anyway? I know I don’t, and I seriously doubt you’re feeling it either. Instead, enjoy the fruits of the internet every way you can and do your post-Thanksgiving shopping from home.

Wine and Cheese Picnic ToteI mean it. You can get everything you’re looking for this season online, without ever being jammed up in traffic, searching high and low for a parking spot, or waiting in line amongst screaming children, only to find that the coveted gift you’re looking for is out of stock.

Sit back, relax, enjoy a cold beer and shop from the comfort or your couch. We’ll help get you started:

There now, doesn’t that sound like a better way to spend your Black Friday? It’s not looking so bleak anymore after all.

Cheers!

Entertaining the Masses

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I grew up in a family where one side was small and simple. My mom has two sisters; both married and never had children. I have one brother and our grand total for any holiday or function has never exceeded 8 people.

My dad’s side however, is an entirely different story. He’s one of four and all of his siblings have children. All together there are 11 grandkids and several of my cousins have started families of their own. To top it off, my dad grew up in a double house with his aunt, uncle and cousins and they’re all very close. Last year for Thanksgiving we rented a huge cabin in a park and had dinner for approximately 55.

I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s loud, it’s kind of crazy and it’s so much fun. When hosting a meal for so many people, it can be tough to make sure there’s always enough hot food and drink to go around. That’s why my family has enough commercial foodservice equipment to open a catering company. If you’re entertaining the masses, during the holidays or otherwise, you should check out the products below. Normally they’re used by restaurants and banquet halls but when you’re feeding a family like mine, they’d certainly come in handy!

First is a 60-cup coffee maker. For just $134.95 you can eliminate the need to spend the entire event tending to the coffee and actually enjoy yourself.

We’ve also got food warmers for $49.95 that will keep mass quantities of side dishes (like mashed potatoes, veggies and pasta) warm and ready to serve. Plastic pitchers are another great investment. For just $6.35 you can make sure there’s water, soda or juice on every table.

Go Plate

Make sure to check out the Go Plate too! Not only is it one of my favorite products (hey, it got us on The Today Show!) it will keep everyone organized and save you from having to do dishes.

Thanksgiving Libations: What Will You Be Drinking on Thursday?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Thanksgiving is coming and so are the interesting choices of beverages available. I personally like a glass of cranberry wine with my meal, while I have other friends who choose differently. With such a wide variety of food on our plates shouldn’t our palates be craving the same for our choice of drinks?

There are tons of traditional fall drinks that warm us, such as a mulled wine or cider, plenty of fruit and dessert wines, and even a wide variety of holiday craft beers. I even have a friend that has his girlfriend drive to the holiday festivities and has about 3 Monster Ales from Brooklyn Brewery before he walks in the door to "enjoy" the endless ramblings of "when are you two going to settle down," "when are you two getting married," or even "when are you guys going to finally have kids."

We have plenty to be thankful for at these times if we look hard enough, and we certainly have to be thankful for the wide selection of drinks available to enjoy with our families. Which beverages are going to grace your Thanksgiving dinner? Take our poll:

What will you be drinking on Thanksgiving? Choose all that apply.

  • Something entirely different (47%)
  • Beer and lots of it (24%)
  • Bourbon (24%)
  • Cranberry wine (3%)
  • Mulled cider (3%)

Best wishes.

Should You Buy a Kegerator? Cost-Benefit Analysis

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The kegerator is one of my very favorite inventions. Not only do these magnificent machines dispense cold, delicious draft beer at home, they make your friends jealous and your bar legit. All of that awesomeness does come with a price, though. Here are some guidelines to help you decide if buying a kegerator is a good investment for you.

First things first, you’ll want to answer the following questions:

  • Are the kinds of beer that you drink available in kegs?
  • How many beers do you drink a week? A month? A year? (Include your friends and family’s consumption too)
  • How long do you plan on using the kegerator?
Now for some basic statistics:

  • A half keg holds 15.5 gallons
  • 15.5 gallons is equal to 1,984 ounces
  • 1,984 ounces / 12 ounces (standard beer size) = 165 beers

That means a quarter keg will hold about half of that (7.75 gallons) or 82.5 beers.

When it comes to the math we’re going to make some generalizations regarding costs. For the sake of our example, we’ll say:

  • 12 pack of light beer costs $9.99
  • A keg of light beer costs $70
  • A good ready-to-go kegerator will cost you around $700

Draft Beer KegeratorAverage households will go through six 12 packs in a month (72 beers). Using these figures, an average consumer will save approximately $50 on beer, every 2 months. With those savings, it will take approximately 2.25 years to reap the benefits of buying a $700 kegerator. After those 2.25 years, you’ll be saving money over the guy still buying 12-packs.

If you consume more beer per month, it will take even less time! If it’s not worth the $700 for a complete system, you can always find or buy an old fridge and build your own with one of our kegerator conversion kits.

Buffalo and the Ghosts of Brewing Past

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Just came across a great article from one of our hometown alternative newspapers, Artvoice, about the Queen City’s brewing past. Here’s a tidbit from Rushing the Growler: The History of Brewing in Buffalo, by Stephen R. Powell, to whet your appetite:

In 1908, Buffalo’s brewers alone made so much beer that if Niagara Falls flowed with beer instead of water, it would take over one minute and 18 seconds to flow over. In that same year Buffalonians drank almost all of the 31 million gallons of beer produced here. What that boils down to is 22 gallons of beer for every man, woman and child in the area. All this beer came out of 25 local breweries scattered across the city.

Only those who have actually witnessed the grandeur of Niagara Falls could grasp how much beer this would be… not only do I recommend reading the full article, but from reading just that short quote, the book should be pretty rad as well! Cheers to Stephen Powell for such great literary imagery, and to Artvoice for the feature itself. And for all of you who haven’t yet visited Niagara Falls, I heartfully recommend that, too.
