Serafijn Christmas Angel

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

As promised, I have another Christmas style beer review for you. There’s still one more to come, but I won’t have it until next week, because I haven’t enjoyed it yet.

The good news on that is, for my 3rd Belgian Festive Ale review of the season, I will finally be using the correct glassware for the beer. For the Serafijn review though, you’ll just have to suffer once more, as I did, with it having been poured in an improper glass.

So, now that all of that’s out of the way, on to my review of Serafijn Christmas Angel (8% ABV), the second Belgian Strong Ale I’ve tried on account of the season…

Serafijn Christmas Angel

Serafijn Christmas Angel, a Belgian Strong Pale Ale from Microbrouwerij Achilles, poured a deep pumpkin orange with a pleasant cloudiness, enhanced by fermented bits, floating around in the glass. In the nose, I took in the very present Belgian yeasts, sweet malts and some citrusy fruits.

In my first sip, I noticed how light and lively the carbonation is, especially on the tip of the tongue. The brew is really very crisp. Its body is medium-light… I think the carbonation played a large part in keeping the mouthfeel on the lighter side for me.

The taste itself is not an overwhelming one, to be honest. Not that that’s bad, but I suppose I expected more from the brew from the aroma. I tasted the hints of citrus that I had smelled, perhaps orange or tangerine. Also present, perhaps because of the yeasts, was a hint of apple.

Most of the time, especially in winter, I prefer a heartier beer with more to tastes to dicern, and a bit more chewiness in each sip. I know it’s created for Christmastime, but I would see myself more likely to drink this, if I did indeed drink it again, on a summer evening, perhaps in lieu of a hefeweizen. The Serafijn wasn’t a horrible offering, but definitely not what I would look for in a winter warmer.

Hopefully my Christmas Nightcap will be a completely different experience (especially with the correct Belgian glass)!

Cheers to you all, and have a most wonderful New Year!

A Good Beer Bar is Hard to Find

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Disclaimer: This is most likely going to turn into somewhat of a rant. I tend to get worked up when I discuss how craptastic most bars are.

Like countless other Americans, I visited a bar or two over this past holiday weekend. Many of my childhood comrades have moved far, far away so Christmas seems to be the only time of year that we can all get together. As tradition has it, several of us meet for a mini-reunion at a bar in our hometown of Rochester, NY.

We’re not really the kind of people interested in gathering at a bar dominated by the DJ and several strobe lights. Like most reasonable adults, we like laid-back places where you can enjoy a good beer and catch up without having to yell. It’s very sad to me how few of these places actually exist. Perhaps it’s just an Upstate NY bar scene problem but it seems to me your options are typically limited to the complete hole in the wall bars filled with drunken "locals" and gross macro brews served from dirty beer lines or even worse, jampacked clubs filled with guys who could be on Jersey Shore doing Jaeger bombs and dancing to hip-hop songs from three years ago.

A good beer bar really is hard to find!

Thankfully, we ended up at The Old Toad, which is one of the three bars in Rochester I can recommend (for curious Rochesterians, the other two are Tap & Mallet and Acme Bar & Pizza).

The atmosphere at The Old Toad is generally pretty relaxed and the staff comes from the other side of the pond, which seems to be a novel idea that really pays off. There’s a bit of beer history there too, as the Toad is the first pub to sell cask conditioned Real Ale in America. The good beer is always abundant (this past visit I enjoyed Bluepoint Winter Ale, some Seriously Bad Elf and Rogue Yellow Snow) and I definitely dig the kind of crowd they draw. My only complaint was the wait time but considering the place was packed, it’s forgivable. We ended up leaving and heading to another local bar (of the "club" variety) and I was so miserable that I ended up doing shots just to cope. That’s so not my style.

I feel like the Buffalo bar scene has a tad bit more to offer the craft beer lover – with Alternative Brews, Coles, Mr. Goodbar, Staples, Hardware, Laughlin’s and Sterling Place Tavern.

I’ve lived in Buffalo since the tender age of 18, so I’m much more familiar with their bar scene and I may very well be unaware of other great beer places in Rochester. If you know of any, please inform me!

If you live in a city with several great beer bars, please consider yourself lucky. MSNBC put together a list of the Top 10 Cities for Beer Lovers and Portland, Oregon was the only U.S. city to make the cut. Men’s Journal kept it stateside and put together The Top Five Beer Towns in the U.S. but unfortunately the two closest beer towns are both a 7-hour drive. To me, that’s simply unacceptable.

Best Cherries Ever

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

There are some things in life that you must experience for yourself. When it comes to such things, the most skillfully detailed description doesn’t even come close.

For writers, it’s quite a challenge to describe things of this caliber because no matter how hard you try, you still feel like you’re doing this marvel (whatever it might be) an injustice.

Luxardo Gourmet Maraschino Cherries are one of those things. I couldn’t understand why anyone in their right mind would pay $17 for a jar of cherries, until I had one.

Maple Manhattans with Luxardo Cherries

When our new Urban Moonshine Maple Bitters came in last week, we decided to try Maple Manhattans and Dave let us use the Luxardo cherries. The drink was fantastic but all I could think about was the cherry. Hannah and I both snuck a couple straight from the jar and I swear they melt in your mouth. I realize that it sounds kind of ridiculous but one little Italian cherry can take you to a very happy place.

I know that a lot of pastry chefs buy our 12-pound can and I’ve decided that I need to find out where they work. I love my sweets and I’d be willing to bet that these scrumptious candied delicacies turn everything they touch into something delightful.

I realize that I probably sound like a nut rambling on about cherries but I’m serious, you can’t possibly understand until you try them for yourself.

Delirium Nocturnum: A Beer Review

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Delirium Nocturnum. With a name like that, I had high hopes for this brew… and it did not disappoint. This is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, weighing in at 8.5% ABV.

The beer poured deep, hazy brown with a 1½ finger head that quickly dissipated. My first whiff caught essences of flowery hops and orange. When I took my first sip, I noticed right away the crisp, rather lively carbonation – near soda quality – yet the brew had weight to it, sitting on my tongue with a medium body, which is a lovely combination.

The very first flavor I tasted at the front of the sip was the orange, which I had expected from the aroma. What I did not expect was the deep apple flavors, along with black cherry through the dry finish. The desiccation that stays in the back of your throat is very present, not unlike that of a dry wine. As the Delirium Nocturnum headed closer from chilled to room-temperature, the black cherry flavor became even more robust, and even more enjoyable.

Delirium Nocturnum Beer Review

I can envision drinking this on cool evenings in late summer through fall… I know, I know, this is classically a winter warmer style of beer, but I’m going with my taste buds here. I most definitely recommend Delirium Nocturnum and look forward to drinking it again.
