Brooklyn Winter Ale

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Last night, right before I headed out to the Employee Appreciation Party for Staples Bar my favorite beer geek, Deron, told me to try the Brooklyn Winter Ale. I had sent him a picture of the extensive beer list and it was one of the first brews he suggested to me. Honestly, I’m so glad he did.

Brooklyn Winter AleBrooklyn Winter Ale is a Scottish Ale, which is characterized by a heavier mouthfeel, rich malty flavors and low hop character. In my opinion, Brooklyn’s version is a good example of what one would typically find in a Scottish Ale, and at 6% ABV, you can have a few without hitting the floor.

As Deron recommended, I waited about 20 minutes after pulling the brew out of the cooler before pouring and having my first sip. It poured a deep red brown with very little head which dissipated almost instantaneously. An aroma of toasty caramel malt is present and luckily, the flavor followed suit. It’s quite heavy feeling on the tongue, but it has the perfect carbonation; the bubbles don’t overpower the mouthfeel but instead, keep it clean tasting, instead of remaining too thick.

I enjoyed my Brooklyn Winter Ale so much that I decided to follow it with a few more – it was a party after all, and it’s not every day I get to serve myself whatever I like out of the cooler, for free. Sure, I could’ve tried a whole slew of brews but admittedly, once I had my first sip of the Winter Ale, I knew it would stay with me for the bulk of the night.

I most definitely recommend trying Brooklyn Winter Ale this season… I plan on trying it again and again :)

The Punch Bowl Quest

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

It’s the little things you don’t worry about until they become a center of attention. A couple of years ago I was throwing a large New Years Party complete with champagne, punch, beer and appetizers. Punch BucketThe whole process was going well and the food was coming out nicely.

Then came time to put out the drinks and I realized that I had dropped my glass punch bowl the year before. I of course didn’t replace it, because I thought, "I’ll take care of it next year." I obviously didn’t. So with 45 minutes to the start of the party, I ran out looking for a new bowl.

Countless stores later I found most places closed or out of punch bowls. I found a dollar store that had a large tie dyed kid’s bucket for sand (I think) that was awful, but it did help conversation along at the party. I went out 2 days later and bought a large, shatterproof punch bowl. I didn’t need that problem again.

Beer Art: In Good Taste or Just a Waste?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Harbin, a city in northern China, is known for (a) insane amounts of snow and ice, complete with freezing temperatures a girl like me can’t even fathom, and (b) their beer, which bears the city’s name. Each year, they enjoy the Harbin Ice Festival, complete with ice sculptures and lights. This year, however, someone had the bright (and incredibly wasteful) idea to make ice art not of water, but of beer instead.

Knowing that it takes extremely cold temperatures for alcohol to freeze, you might be wondering if I’m pulling your chain. Well, when I say it gets cold in Harbin, I mean it – temperatures had dropped to -29°F on the day this sculpture was made, according to this article. [[shiverrrrrrr]]

So, what’s your opinion on this? Do you dig the use of copious amounts of beer for art, or does your heart cry out for all those bottles of dumped suds?

Join the fight in changing Pennsylvania’s old, out-of-date beer laws! If you feel that Pennsylvanians and visitors to the state should be able to buy beer in grocery and convenience stores, sign the petition here. Together, we can make these archaic beer laws history.

Cheers!

Beer Perfume – What Will They Think of Next?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I spend a lot of time reading about beer online and every once in a while I come across something that really boggles my mind. This news story from NBC on a new beer scented perfume really threw me. Apparently, the logic here is that men like the scent of beer and they will therefore like women who smell like beer. Hmm…

They’re making it from waste products of an organic brewery in Seattle, so it’s good for the environment but I’m just not sure how marketable of a product they have here. I mean, I like sauerkraut a whole lot but by no means do I want my boyfriend smelling like fermented cabbage.
