Bunghole is a Beer Term! Who Knew?
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by LizAs one might imagine, here at KegWorks we have a pretty laid back office. We enjoy joking around and much to the bosses’ dismay; much of our joking involves playful name-calling.
One of my favorite terms of endearment is actually "bunghole" – a lighthearted label that my dear friend Hannah (our incredibly fun and talented Graphic Designer) will often bestow upon me after I do so something silly or ridiculous.
At first I thought the word was a little absurd in and of itself, however it did grow on me and I’ve recently started calling her a "bunghole" in return.
Much to my surprise, I came across the term "bung" while doing some research on the Beer Advocate site this morning.
Here’s what I learned:
Bung: The stopper in the hole in a keg or cask through which the keg or cask is filled and emptied. The hole may also be referred to as a bung or bunghole. Real beer must use a wooden bung.
There you have it! A bunghole is actually a beer term and we’ve been using industry terminology all along.

So, when calling someone a bunghole, you’re actually calling them the hole for a container of alcohol in which a cork is shoved? Makes good sense to me.
