Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! Rosée d’Hibiscus

Friday, May 7th, 2010 by Hannah

Tonight I had my very first beer brainstorm with the man behind Lost in the Beer Aisle. Essentially we meet at a specified time on chat and pop open the same beer together for a review. Fun concept that I look forward to doing again (thanks Josh!).

I popped out to Premier with list of brews queued up in his fridge so I could choose one that (a) was available and (b) looked wicked interesting. Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! Rosée d’Hibiscus was it.

Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! Rosée d'Hibiscus

This 5% ABV spiced Belgian wheat poured a cloudy, ruddy rose brown with a head that fizzled out, dissipating super quickly. Its aroma was of raspberries, pink grapefruit and flowers (I assume from the hibiscus).

Rosée d’Hibiscus’ body was extremely light and fizzy, with a flavor so subtle that it was almost like drinking super watered down, fizzy juice. Josh put it perfectly when he noted it was like lightly flavored seltzer water. Really disappointed, honestly – with the aroma and cloudiness I would’ve thought there be more to the palate but unfortunately, it’s quite lacking. I could barely even taste the wheat!

If I had to define one beer on earth as a lawnmower beer, it would be this one.  The taste is so, so light that I really feel more like I’m drinking fizzy flavored water than beer.  I thought maybe there would be some nice Belgian yeast action, since it was so cloudy, but in all honesty, it was quite a let-down.

I would never buy this again but if someone offered it to me after I spent 18 hours in a desert, I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks again for joining me in the brainstorm…even if the beer was a major let down. Hopefully we can ‘storm again soon.

I thought of another situation where this beer would be key…when eating too many saltines and no other drinks are available. :)

Lost – thanks for having me; it was a great time and I look forward to doing it again. Just say the word.

Good call on the saltine overdose – so only ever drink this beer if (1) you’r elost in the desert or (2) you’ve OD’d on saltines.

    Check!

Hannah … nice thoughts on this interesting beer. Dieu du Ciel has become somewhat of a hero on my shelf … but not because of this beer. I saw you have done some serious blogging about stouts, and if that is to continue, you definitely need to review Dieu du Ciel’s Aphrodite (“Aphrodisiaque” in Canada), as well as their Peche Mortel.

    The Aphrodite specifically is unbelievable.

    Cheers!

Taylor – your first name is my last! but now back to beer :) … I’m glad to hear that other brews from Dieu de Ciel are worth trying (and maybe even revering!). I’ll be sure to check out Aphrodite asap – I think they carry it at one of my nearby craft beer stores.

    Thanks for the recommendation!
