Portuguese Lemonade
Ruby or Tawny Port (Tawny if you dig the oak flavor)
Old fashioned lemonade

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add equal parts of Port and lemonade, stir and enjoy.

Pound Cake
Lemon-lime or grapefruit soda (like Fresca)
2 oz vanilla vodka

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add vanilla vodka and top off with citrus soda. Stir, drink and repeat.

North Coast Brewing Old Rasputin XII

Friday, June 11th, 2010

North Coast Brewing Old Rasputin XII 12th Anniversary is a 11.2% ABV Russian imperial stout, aged in oak bourbon barrels. Produced in limited quantities, I was stoked when a new friend in Chicago gifted it to me (thanks Tom!).

North Coast Old Rasputin XII

Old Rasputin XII poured a deep, dark raw umber—near black—with a ½-finger head that dissipated after a short time but had great legs. Its aroma was of dark, bittersweet chocolate with the heat of alcohol in the nose.

Its body was lighter than I expected but by no means "light." I’d say it weighed in at a medium to medium-heavy (heavier as it warmed up even more) with tiny bubbled carbonation that was most detectable on the tip of my tongue. The carbonation kept it from being cloying, despite the fact that it’s an imperial aged stout.

On the palate, it was dark bitter chocolate and sweet hot bourbon from the barrels in which it was aged. Positively delectable and one I would love to enjoy again.

I cannot thank Tom of theperfectlyhappyman.com for bringing this to me, otherwise I might never have had the opportunity to indulge.

Cheers!

All About Stouts

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

"Stout" is a beer style that in my opinion is greatly misunderstood. People often think that these dark beers are more potent, yet a pint of Guinness actually has less alcohol than a Bud. Speaking of Guinness, many people find it to be the end all, be all of stouts. It’s actually a great beer but it’s just one little part of the stout story.

Stouts can be dry, sweet, flavored, hoppy or strong. There are tons of variations on the style. They share the commonality of a roasted flavor characteristic (because they’re made with roasted barley that has been kilned until it resembles burnt toast, instead of being malted) but that flavor can range from bitter unsweetened chocolate to coffee-like.

If you want to expand your knowledge of the various kinds of stouts, read on and discover the differences that distinguish one dark beer from the next.

Stout Beers

Stout (yep, just "Stout")

  • Dark almost black in color
  • Heavily roasted flavor profile
  • The darkest member of the ale family
Dry Stout

  • Rich and dark
  • Definitive bitter note and drying palate feel
  • Closely associated with Ireland (specifically Guinness)
  • Nitrogen flushed
  • Classically paired with oysters
  • Popular with US microbrewers
Sweet Stout (aka Milk or Cream Stouts)

  • Typically a British specialty
  • Distinctive sweetness to the palate
  • Show chocolate and caramel flavors
  • Obtain their sweetness from the use of chocolate malts and lactic sugars during the brewing process
Oatmeal Stout

  • A variation of a sweet stout
  • Made with oats instead of roasted malt (enhances body and mouthfeel)
  • Highly flavorful with a velvety texture and a hint of sweetness
  • Brewed by the British back when stouts were considered a nutritious part of the everyday diet (the beginning of the century)
  • Style revived by Samuel Smith in 1980 and is now very popular
Flavored Stout

  • Any stout with additional flavors added
  • Dark fruits, coffee and chocolate flavored are most popular
  • The marriage of flavors should at best be greater than the sum of its parts
Strong Stout

  • A stronger version of a dry stout (ABV between 5.7 and 7.5%)
  • Initial malt sweetness leads to a dry and balanced finish
  • Coffee-like roasted barley is evident in the aroma and a full bodied mouthfeel is common
  • Fruity esters are practically non-existent
Imperial Stout

  • The EXTRA strong version of stout
  • Dense, opaque black
  • Strong in alcohol content (6-7% or higher)
  • Burnt cocoa and dried fruit flavors are typical
  • Originally brewed for Russia and the Baltic states
  • Typically a winter specialty

Next time you’re craving a stout and you feel inclined to go for the Guinness, just remember that there are other beers out there.

Primus Cervezas Tempus Doble Malta

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The final brew that Rodolfo gifted me with from his brewery was Tempus Doble Malta, an imperial altbier (really!) brewed with double malt.

Tempus Doble Malta

Before Tempus Doble Malta, I had never heard of an imperial altbier. I’ve got to hand it to Primus though; this is a strong beer with tons of flavor, just how I like it. The 7% ABV brew poured a deep amber with 2 fingers of head, great retention and thick lacing on the pint. Its aroma was of wicked dark biscuity malt with a molasses and caramel character.

The body was a robust medium with light carbonation to keep it very drinkable, even for a big altbier. It slid down nice and smooth through the finish, tasting of that dark bread, coffee and sweet caramel. Flavor lingered in the sides of my mouth and back of my tongue. I highly recommend this offering from Primus, if ever you happen upon it.

Cheers!

Icing – A Brand Centric Drinking Game That’s All the Rage

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I’m no stranger to drinking games but when one of my colleagues sent me this New York Times article on the latest "it" game of the moment, Icing – I was nothing short of flabbergasted.

According to the Times, the game is spreading virally – like crazy. The object is to "ice" your friends, before they "ice" you. It’s actually quite simple; just hand a friend a sickly sweet Smirnoff Ice malt beverage and he (most people who play are guys) must kneel down on one knee and drink the entire thing… unless he is also carrying a bottle with him – in which case, the original "attacker" must drink both bottles of the notoriously feminine (and mostly awful) beverage.

Smirnoff denies having anything to do with the game and its popularity. I’m not entirely convinced that they’re completely uninvolved but regardless, it’s amazing how the trend is gaining clout. With "icings" documented on Twitter, Facebook pages and blogs as well as an entire website dedicated to the game, it’s become all the rage in about a month’s time. Check out BrosIcingBros.com to see for yourself. Apparently it’s popular at weddings, graduations and other events – so look out or you too could fall victim to a lukewarm bottle of stuff you don’t want to drink.

Most people playing are probably too caught up in the hype to realize that they’re likely part of a mass-marketing tactic that’s encouraging binge drinking and the purchase of a product that they don’t even enjoy. A company statement from the folks at Smirnoff stated, "Icing is consumer-generated, and some people think it is fun," a company statement read. "We never want underage ‘icing’ and we always want responsible drinking."

It is said that the exact origin can’t be determined but early on, the game was most favored by fraternity brothers in the South. Not so shocking if you ask me. I wasn’t in college too long ago and I can totally see the guys in my dorms taking this and running with it. Regardless of your desire to take part, consider yourself up to date.

Primus Cervezas Tempus Reserva Especial

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Primus Tempus Reserva Especial is another one of the offerings that Rodolfo gifted me with during my visit to Chicago. It’s described as a Scottish style ale with an ABV of 6.1%.

Primus Tempus Reserva Especial

Tempus Reserva Especial poured a deep golden russet with a two-finger head. Its medium retention thins out to a light layer with a bit of lacing on the sides of the glass. Sweet, biscuity malts are the star, backed by a hint of apple in the nose.

Its body was medium-light with light carbonation. The palate, to me, was of sweet, dark bread with a touch of dark fruit in the finish. Reserva Especial is a fairly tasty brew but not a great representation of the style, in my opinion.
