El Presidente Cocktail, Revamped

Monday, July 12th, 2010

I happened upon RumDood.com recently since, when I’m not drinking a refreshing beer in the summer, you’ll often find me with some sort of classic rum concoction in hand (or good rum on the rocks, all on its own).

I read his thoughts on the classic El Presidente cocktail and couldn’t agree more; far too much curaçao and a bit over the top on vermouth in the classic recipe, leaving me wishing for something more refreshing.

I find RumDood’s own modified version of El Presidente much more enjoyable. Try it for yourself!

El Presidente, Revamped

1½ oz aged rum
¾ oz dry vermouth
¼ oz curaçao
½ tsp grenadine
Orange or lemon twist, for garnish

Stir in a mixing glass with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange or lemon twist, your choice.

I recommend this cocktail for a warm summer evening. Truly enjoyable.

The French Hops Experiment

Friday, July 9th, 2010

This coming Wednesday, July 14th, Oregon’s Pelican Brewery will debut a one-time-only brewed beer in honor of Bastille Day, according to brewpublic.com.

This beer, which is called The Guillotine, is special in that it is brewed from experimental French hops; the first product of the grower’s co-op breeding program.

Pelican brewmaster Darron Welch told brewpublic.com of the international-style pale ale, "we’re making a beer designed to be straight ahead. It will be a beer that allows for the characteristic of the hop to be prominent."

I love to hear of brewers trying new things. The Guillotine will only be available on draft, so if anyone gets a chance to try it, please let me know how it is.

Summer Mixer: Dandelion and Burdock

Dandelion and Burdock Soda with Vodka

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I love Fentimans Dandelion & Burdock Soda. Love.

It’s like no other soda I’ve ever tried. Sweet and unique, it’s made with full strength infusions of dandelion leaves and burdock root, with an added touch of pear, ginger and anise. It’s truly one of a kind and tastes incredible with vodka (which is what you see pictured above).

If you’re looking for something different in a soda this summer, look no further than Fentimans.

Cheers!

NEW! 13-ounce Belgian Ale Glasses

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

13-ounce Belgian Ale GlassWhen I first started writing beer reviews on Belgian Strong Ales here, my pal Deron (of Top 5 posts fame) said, "Dude. You need to get a Belgian Ale glass. They’re not just for looks."

He was right.

My posts that formerly featured brews in standard shaker pints gave way to better tasting experiences and photos, like the one here, of 21st Amendment Monk’s Blood.

That particular glass is an 8¼-ounce version. Its bulbous bottom and flared rim aerate the brew’s aroma and help to give the taster a better experience of flavor overall. I ain’t just whistling dixie here. This is the real deal.

Finally, we have a larger version of this very popular glass. Our 13-ounce Belgian Ale glass is here and I cannot wait to pick up a few. Sometimes 8¼ ounces of delicious ale just isn’t enough, you know?

Try one for yourself; you’ll be treated to all of the dimension and complexity that your Belgian ales had all along.

The "Beer Me" Beer-Fetching Robot

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Next in the line of beer-fetching robots is the Beer Me Robot, created by the minds at Willow Garage.

The robot is controlled by Willow Garage’s Beer Me web application, which allows you to choose which beer you want and send the robot to retrieve it for you. If your brew of choice is not available, the robot will report back to you via the application, so that you can make another choice.

It opens the fridge, chooses the correct beer, closes the fridge, brings the beer and even pops the cap before passing it off to you. The roboticists at Willow Garage even added face detection so that the robot won’t drop the beer too early, resulting in (what my friends and I refer to as) a wounded soldier.

Cheers to the Willow Garage team – well played, guys. Interested in other beer-inspired robots? Check out the Brew Bot, created right here in Buffalo, and the beer-pouring robot vying to pick up some bartending shifts.

Flying in the US? Plan a Layover in Chicago

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Chicago’s mayor, Richard Daley, has proposed that both O’Hare and Midway start offering beer pushcarts in post-security areas of the airports, according to this article on USAtoday.com.

Chicago OHare Airport

In order to generate more revenue at the airports, besides that produced by flights alone, and to give travelers an even better experience all around, there will be at least 6 pushcarts at O’Hare and a number (yet unknown) at Midway as well.

What’s more, Mayor Daley has proposed that restaurants and bars be allowed to serve liquor 24 hours per day, instead of closing at 10 or 11pm, as they currently do.

I don’t know about you, but I think Chicago’s mayor has the right idea. Fingers crossed for proposal approval!

Victory Prima Pils: A Perfect Summertime Brew

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Victory Prima Pils

Victory Prima Pils poured a delightfully sunny, golden yellow with a fluffy white head. Mine poured with 1½ fingers, while my companion’s poured with well over two fingers, plus his stuck around for much longer than mine. Maybe my glass wasn’t quite as beer-clean as I had thought?

The aroma of Prima Pils was mostly grassy, herbal hops, backed by a sweet, bready malt and yeast. The grassiness was the star here and even before tasting, I knew this would be a thirst-quencher.

Its lively, but not overdone, carbonation danced on the tip of my tongue, smoothing out as it slid down the sides and back of my tongue. Overall the body was medium-light and wholly refreshing, with a hoppy dessication on the sides of my tongue through the finish.

I had taken my very first sip just as my company was arriving. After swallowing, I bounded downstairs to let him in and, once a few good moments had passed, all of a sudden I was treated to a lovely malty aftertaste; one of sweet, unbaked bread. I was happily surprised to have this sneak up on me so many minutes after the sip was finished.

Once I had more time to discern the flavor entirely, I found that the palate followed that of the nose quite well; grassy hops at the start along with some grapefruit toward the middle of the tongue (which my companion had pointed out—definitely a good call there!), leaving that lovely dryness in the finish that I mentioned above. The hops became more and more balanced by the bready malt as I enjoyed sip after sip. Truly a complex German-style pilsner that I cannot wait to pick up again.

At 5.3% ABV, Victory Prima Pils is a perfect summertime session beer, leaving the palate refreshed and ready for more. I highly recommend this brew.

Want to learn more about the German pilsner style? Deron laid out some history, characteristics and great food pairing ideas in his Top 5 German Pilsners. Check it out!

Cheers!
