Tastes of Autumn: Pumpkin Cocktail

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

This season I tend toward flavors of fall when choosing a beverage, which in all honesty, is usually a beer; pumpkin ale, Oktoberfest brews fill my fridge and my tummy. Sometimes it’s nice to switch it up though, and try a cocktail instead.

One of my favorite mixed drinks inspired by the season pairs pumpkin with pear vodka. It’s delicious and I most definitely recommend it for your next get-together or even a relaxing evening at home.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin Divine Cocktail
2 oz Grey Goose La Poire vodka
2 oz pumpkin butter (recipe follows)
1 oz triple sec
1 oz simple syrup
Pinch each of ground cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and ginger
Grated nutmeg for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, pumpkin butter, triple sec and simple syrup. Add a pinch each of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and ginger. Shake well, until beads of condensation appear on the outside of the shaker. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with grated nutmeg. Enjoy!

Whip up a batch of tasty pumpkin butter for this cocktail and more, with this recipe from easteuropeanfood.about.com:

Pumpkin Butter Recipe
1 lb pie pumpkin, peeled and cubed or (1) 15 oz can pumpkin (not pie mix)
½ cup water
½ cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp ginger
¼ tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp cloves

Place pumpkin and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer until the pumpkin has broken down. Strain through a sieve or food mill. If using canned pumpkin, omit this step and pick up below.

Combine pumpkin puree with sugar and spices. Place sweetened pulp in a microwave-safe bowl and cook for 20 minutes at a time, stirring frequently until thick enough so the butter doesn’t run off a spoon when turned upside down.

Place hot butter in hot sterilized jars, leaving ¼-inch headspace. Cover with hot sterilized lids and rings. Process in a water bath for 10 minutes. Remove to counter and allow to cool before storing in a cool, dry, dark place.

If you don’t process in a water bath, the butter can be kept refrigerated for up to three weeks or frozen for up to one year.

Have any other great autumn cocktails we should try? Pass them along.

Cheers!

Pole Dancing Takes On a Whole New Spin

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

When I came across an article titled "From Strip Club to Living Room: Pole Dancing Goes Mainstream" on the AOL News Site yesterday, I had to read it.

Pole Dancing

People may not realize it but we actually sell "dancer poles" here at KegWorks. Lately, we’ve sold quite a few more than usual. According to the article, pole dancing is an "intense craze that’s gone from the strip club to the living room, to the bedroom, to the gymnasium and beyond."

It goes on to say that the neighbor’s wife or your town librarian may have gotten into the hobby/sport. Can we call it a sport?

This Sunday marks the second annual California Pole Dance Championships and apparently "there are some incredible athletes now working out on the pole."

Just out of curiosity, I googled the phrase "pole dancing Buffalo, NY" and found that there is a pole dance studio right in my neighborhood. The same studio also has a contemporary burlesque dance troupe. Ha! Who knew?

All I can say is that this phenomenon has to be a good thing. Women are getting good exercise, a healthy sense of self-confidence and their significant others may also benefit. Why not embrace the pole?

Pairing Food with Oktoberfest Beer

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The Oktoberfest celebration in Munich is well underway and even if you can’t make it to Germany this year, you may be throwing an Oktoberfest party in your neck of the woods. So, what food should you serve with the traditional Märzen brews?

What immediately comes to mind, of course, is traditional German fare (which I positively LOVE). Things like sausages, wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut and the like are perfect matches for Oktoberfest beers. Of course, not everyone loves German food as much as I do. So, what do you pair with your Märzen if you don’t dig traditional wursts?

Believe it or not, options are plentiful. Do you prefer a good steak for friendly get-togethers? Oktoberfest beer tastes great with steak, hot off the grill, as long as you steer clear of super-acidic sauces, like tangy steak sauces (which, admittedly, I only ever use on a burger anyway).

Burgers and Oktoberfest Beer

Speaking of burgers, your Oktoberfest brews will taste great with these too, just don’t drown the patty in barbecue sauce, ketchup or yellow mustard (sweet mustard would work fine though).

Sweet-sauce pizza is another superb match for Märzen. Bready malts in the beer pair nicely with the tomato sauce, crust and most toppings, while the light hops and crisp carbonation keep the meal from being cloying.

Have some vegetarians in the mix? Match Oktoberfest with hummus and pita and you’ll have a crowd pleaser every time.

If you know of any other foods you simply love pairing with Oktoberfest Märzen, please let me know! I’d love to try them myself.

Cheers!

A Look at Limoncello

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Limoncello is an incredible liqueur that is gaining more and more popularity in America as of late. This sweet yet zesty drink is created from Sorrento lemons found on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. The Sorrento lemons have a supremely thick skin, which make them perfect for making limoncello, since it’s made from only lemon zest, not the fruit inside.

Limoncello Glass

Limoncello is traditionally served cold and neat in small, special glasses, like the one you see above. Its relaxing yet rejuvenating aroma makes it a perfect finish to any meal.

Cheers!

Wagner Valley Oatmeal Stout

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Wagner Valley Oatmeal Stout

Wagner Valley Oatmeal Stout had been calling to me from my fridge for quite some time and last night seemed the perfect time to finally enjoy it. Any of you who read regularly know I’m a huge fan of stouts and, while not mind-blowing, this brew was no exception.

Appearance: Wagner Valley Oatmeal Stout poured thick and wicked dark, near black but more of a deep, dark raw umber. Its toasted tan head was only about a finger high but had great retention and poured so creamily I couldn’t wait for my first sip.

Aroma: Scents of coffee and bittersweet chocolate – actually very much like the raw cacao I tasted in Chicago, brought from Mexico by Rodolfo Andreu of Primus Cervezas – with roasted, malty oats.

Taste: Flavors of the dark, bittersweet chocolate really come through here, moreso than any other flavor I detected through the aroma. I also noticed what I can only describe as a sweet, milky flavor. A bitter dryness follows through in the finish, noticed mostly on the sides of my tongue and back of my throat.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy, despite lively carbonation, especially as it warms up a bit. The head remained thick and creamy from start to finish, too. Its medium to medium-full body was silky and very enjoyable.

Overall: Like I noted earlier, Wagner Valley’s isn’t a mind-blowing oatmeal stout but, as a stout lover, I enjoyed it very much and would definitely drink it again. At 5.5% ABV, this is a stout you can drink a few of without losing your head.

Free Beer! Get Your Free Beer!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

You read it right. Free beer, beginning September 29th and lasting through mid-October! The only catch? It’s Budweiser.

Budweiser

According to Time.com, Bud is starting a new, national campaign… a campaign to give away 500,000 free beers around the country.

That’s 500,000 free Budweisers.

Why, you ask? Bud is hurting, my friends. The craft beer revolution is taking away a lot of sales from America’s macro beer giant. Of course, there are many people out there who don’t choose to pony up the cash to buy better-tasting craft brews… these customers are spending money on beers even cheaper than Budweiser! I assume they’re getting about the same flavor as Bud for less cash.

On September 29th, Bud will host a Budweiser National Happy Hour aimed at American hipsters, with hopes of getting them to not only try a Bud, but maybe even like it. They’re even teaming up with Facebook to make sure that kids turning 22 and older, during the promotion, will get a free Bud on their birthdays.

It’s worth a shot, right? I know I won’t be switching off of my favorite craft brews but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a free Bud if it was handed to me. And who knows? Maybe the hipsters will shift their brew of choice from PBR to Bud… stranger things have occurred.

Cheers!
