(Adult) Halloween Treats for the Weekend

Friday, October 29th, 2010

We’re big fans of the Luxist site and we just had to point you in the direction of this post – Five Spirits and Cocktails for Adult Halloween Parties.

Vampire Kiss MartiniWe were expecting the absinthe and Crystal Head Vodka recommendations (Note: if you don’t want to pay for $42 vodka, you can buy one of our skulls and fill it with whatever spirit you’d like) but some of the other recipes have us really intrigued.

We especially love the suggestion of using Chambord, as it’s a raspberry blackberry liqueur that is perfect for turning cocktails blood red. Also, it’s pretty tasty.

Vampire Kiss Martini anyone? It’s 1½ oz vodka, 1½ oz champagne and ¾ oz Chambord. Just take the red sugar and rim a martini glass. Pour the vodka and Chambord into the glass. Top off the drink with the champagne.

The Brazilian Pumpkin Frappe sounds pretty delicious too. It’s 1½ oz Cabana Cachaça, ½ oz Jamaican Rum, 1 whole egg, ½ oz Half n Half, ½ oz Maple syrup, 2 dashes Fee’s Aromatic bitters and 1 heaping teaspoon of Organic Pumpkin pie mix topped with cinnamon and fresh grated nutmeg.

Make sure to check out the Luxist post for all of the info.

Happy Birthday Internet! We Love You

Friday, October 29th, 2010

I subscribe to this little daily email factoid service and every morning it sends me some random piece of information, oftentimes pertaining to the date. According to my sources, today is the Internet’s birthday.

On this date in 1969, a Sigma-7 computer at UCLA was linked to an SDS 940 computer at Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California. UCLA computer science professor Leonard Kleinrock sent a message from his school’s host computer. He was trying to write "login," but the system crashed after two letters, and lo! The Internet was born with the first data message sent between two networked computers.

I wonder if Leonard Kleinrock ever imagined he’d be able to buy great Beer Geek Gifts and Cocktails Mixers on his computer. Either way, I’m extremely glad we have that ability today. Happy Birthday Internet!

New Beer Alert: Duvel Tripel Hop Golden Strong Ale

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The latest from the lineup of Duvel’s quality Belgian brews is Duvel Tripel Hop, a golden strong ale. Now, don’t be confused by the name; "Tripel Hop" doesn’t refer to the beer as being a super hop-monster, although a dry-hopping has has indeed been applied.

Rather, according to Duvel brewmaster Hedwig Neven, the name refers to the "three prestigious varieties of hops: Saaz from the Czech Republic, Styrian Goldings from Slovenia and Amarillo from the United States. We also use the dry-hopping technique which consists, in addition to conventional hopping, of adding additional hop cones at a later stage. That makes the character of the beer very special: a rich range of impression on the palate, additional hop flavors and — the most perceptible characteristic — a pervasive zesty bitterness."

Duvel Tripel hop

Duvel Tripel Hop weighs in at 9.5% ABV and although I hear the flavor and aroma aren’t overwhelmed by the alcohol, it does apparently sneak up on you.

I have become a huge fan of Belgian Golden Strong Ales, so I look forward to trying this one, especially since it seems to deviate a bit from the style with the application of dry-hopping.

Duvel Tripel Hop has been released to stores only twice so far. I’m hoping my local brew shop might have a bottle on the shelves for me to pick up this week. Have you had the pleasure of tasting the newest recipe from Duvel? Tell me about it.

Cheers!

Homebrewing Oak-Infused Spirits Got Easier

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

I hope winemakers’ and home brewers’ ears everywhere are pricking up over our newest additions to our homebrew section: Oak Infusion Spirals for Beer and Wine.

Oak Spirals for Flavor Infusion in Beer and Wine

In only 6 weeks (as opposed to a long 8 months of clean barrel aging) you can give your beer or wine a medium toast, oak aroma and flavor, with far less mess than using oak chips. The oak infusion spirals are available in American Oak and French Oak varieties, depending on which flavors and aromas you’re looking to achieve.

Oak Infusion Spirals for Beer and Wine:

  • Are void of sapwood, bark and knots
  • Are air-dried for 24 months
  • Feature a shape that accelerates flavor and aroma extraction
  • Offer less tannins and more bouquet, for an oak-rich aroma instead of only overbearing flavor
  • Fully flavor 6 gallons of beer or wine (3 gallons per stick) in just 6 weeks

Try your hand at oak-infusion into your own home brewed beer or wine, starting at just $8.95!

Why Smoke When You Can Just Drink Marlboro Beer?

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Drinking and smoking have always seemed like a natural pair and this "blast from the past" story on Foodiggity tells of Philip Morris’ attempt to straight up combine the two in the early 70′s.

Marlboro Beer

The tobacco giant had acquired full ownership of Miller Brewing Company and in 1970 they filed a patent for Marlboro Beer. Plans were eventually squashed but the fact that it was ever an idea in the first place is pretty entertaining.

Can you imagine? Marlboro Red, Marlboro Beer Light, Marlboro Beer Ultra Light, Marlboro Medium Ale, Marlboro Menthol and maybe even Marlboro Smooth – ha! They could market it as "All of your vices in one fun bottle! Ultra-concentrated for your convenience…"

Hey, maybe it’s not too late? Think it’d ever fly?

Poll: Favorite Beers for Autumn

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

As temperatures begin to fall a bit now that Summer has come to a close, people tend to switch up from the witbier and kolsch styles to brews with a bit more malt and body. Not all people, of course. This is just a generalization. Whichever way you drink, I’m interested in your points of view.

Which Are Your Favorite Beers Styles for Fall? Choose as many answers as you like.
