New Rules for Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

With the hammer coming down on alcoholic energy drinks, like Four Loko, which add synthetic energy blends and lots of pure caffeine to their high-alcohol-content beverages, the Brewers Association will formally petition the US TTB to set rules on alcoholic drinks containing caffeine. [source: BeerAdvocate.com]

The questionable alcoholic energy drinks have received a lot of negative attention because of directly caused health issues, deaths and more. Many states are banning the sale of drinks, like Four Loko, including New York.

According to BeerAdvocate.com, "The petition seeks to disallow synthetic and pure caffeine additions to alcohol beverages, but allow incidental caffeine from ingredients that have a long tradition in brewing, such as coffee, chocolate and tea. The petition seeks to clarify that coffee, chocolate, herbs, spices, seeds and fruit are ingredients that should remain available to brewers to make beers for responsible enjoyment by beer drinkers."

The intention of the Brewers Association’s petition is to provide a clear national standard to assist states in their individual rulemaking, under the 21st Amendment, which would remove the questionable alcoholic energy drinks from shelves, while allowing products brewed from naturally caffeinated ingredients, like coffee, chocolate and tea to remain.

According to Charlie Papazian, Brewers Association President, "Responsible brewers have successfully used coffee, chocolate and tea to add interesting flavor and complexity to their beers for decades. In fact, the Aztecs brewed a corn, honey and chili-based beer that contained cocoa. Many craft brewers build on these traditions today using coffee, tea and chocolate. On the other hand, the addition of artificial caffeine not from a natural ingredient source has no heritage or tradition in brewing. We support a ban on the direct addition of caffeine."

In the interest of honoring longtime natural brewing tradition, I support this petition. How about you?

Brewer Gets Go-Ahead to Print Pledge of Allegiance on Beer Cans

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Don Sessions, a 75 year old brewer from Oklahoma has just received approval to include the Pledge of Allegiance on his beer cans. According to the Toronto Sun, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau initially denied his request because it "violated rules that prohibit the use of statements and images relating to the American flag."

Ol Glory Beer

After Sessions modified the label to include a line saying that the beer isn’t endorsed by or affiliated with U.S. government, approval was granted. The beer will be marketed under the same name as his energy drink, Ol’ Glory.

"If you are sitting in a bar and drinking this beer, you’ll think of America and you might think of God." Sessions told an Oklahoman newspaper. Session’s company will donate a portion of all sales to Operation Homefront, an organization that helps people who volunteer with the military.

Interestingly enough, the website and the news article failed to mention anything about the beer itself. My guess? It’s a light pilsner with a strong hint of patriotic marketing gimmick.

I’m as American as the next girl and I don’t mean to sound like a hater, it’s just that in my opinion, a real American beer is one that’s a product of the American dream. Thoughts?

Pairing Beer With Your Thanksgiving Pies

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

You may have your turkey dinner beer pairings covered, choosing possibly from amber ales, märzens, brown ales and biere de garde styles, but how about the delicious desserts you’ll be enjoying post-dinner?

Thanksgiving PiesFour pies that many families have on Thanksgiving are pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, pecan pie and mincemeat. For the sake of brevity I’ll just touch on these, but if you have beer pairing questions about other types of Thanksgiving desserts, leave a comment in the post and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Pairing Beer with Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie and Sweet Potato Pie

These three southern-style pies feature sweet, cozy flavors that pair really well with sweet stouts or heavy baltic porters. The notion of pairing a pumpkin ale with pumpkin pie may be the first idea to cross your mind but I don’t recommend it. The flavors would simply get lost in one another. You want a beer that compliments the flavor of these pies, not one that matches it.

When it comes to pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie and pecan pie, I most definitely suggest going with a chocolate stout, oatmeal stout, cream stout or baltic porter. These are sweet enough to stand up to the pie and work really well with the flavors instead of disappearing.

Some of my personal favorite beers for pairing with pumpkin, pecan and sweet potato pies are:

Pairing Beer with Mincemeat Pie

Mincemeat pies feature flavors of apple, dark fruit and spices – perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas and even New Year’s celebrations. When it comes to pairing beer with flavors like these, I recommend an English brown ale or an English special bitter (ESB). The malty character of these styles compliment the fruits and spices, while carbonation helps to cut through the richness of the pie.

My personal recommendations for pairing beer with mincemeat pie are:

Have any recommendations of your own? Pass ‘em along in the comments section.. We’d love to add more to our arsenal.

Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!

Indulge with the Gingerbread Man & Pumpkin Pie Martini

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Tom passed me the Robb Report Host’s Guide for the Holidays and I was really impressed with what I found. Tons of great information! The best wine vintages for your table, rare spirits that make great gifts, a guide to glassware and custom cocktails.

Pumpkin Cocktail for the Holidays

The "Mixing Merry" section was my favorite and not just because they use my motto of, "eating and drinking without guilt is one of the beauties of the holiday spirit."

I’m going to try out one of their punch recipes for my annual holiday party but I just had to share these two now:

Gingerbread Man by Michael Trujillo

1 oz Skyy Infusions Ginger Vodka
1 oz Faretti Biscotti Famosi liqueur
½ oz cane sugar syrup
1 bar spoon of molasses (cut 50/50 with water)
1 oz cream

Combine ingredients with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass crusted with a mixture of crushed gingerbread cookies, fresh-ground nutmeg and cinnamon.

Pumpkin Pie Martini by Amanda Rosario

1 oz vanilla vodka
½ oz Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps
½ oz Baileys Irish Ceram
1 oz pumpkin puree

Combine ingredients with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled martini or cocktail glass, rimmed with cinnamon and graham-cracker crumbs (optional).

I might just have to try this Pumpkin Pie Martini as a Thanksgiving nightcap. Cheers!

Brew Masters – Thoughts from the Next Morning

Brew Masters Reality TV Show on Discovery Channel

Last night I watched the premiere of Brew Masters on the Discovery Channel. The beer world had been buzzing with excitement about the show for quite a while and although I was quite keen on the idea of a whole television series dedicated to craft beer, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. All I really knew was that the show was about Sam Calagione, the founder of Dogfish Head Brewery. Now I’ve seen the movie Beer Wars, I’ve read Sam’s book "Brewing Up a Business: Adventures in Entrepreneurship" and I follow Dogfish Head pretty closely. As weird as it may sound, I kind of felt like I already knew the guy.

The show last night just reaffirmed my belief that Sam and I would get along swimmingly. He’s a funny, personable, really cool guy who is beyond passionate about what he does. I wasn’t sure what to expect execution-wise but I thought that it was nicely done, in true Discovery Channel fashion. It was nice to take a sneak-peak into brewery operations and the storyline was interesting.

I thought the first episode did a great job of catering to beer nerds and novices alike. You didn’t have to know a ton about beer to understand and appreciate the show but at the same time, if you DO know a thing or two about beer and brewing you weren’t bored. It’s a nice balance of education and entertainment.

Dogfish Head Bitches Brew

They focused on Bitches Brew, a beer that came about thanks to collaboration with Sony Music. The beer was part of a 40th Anniversary tribute to the legendary Miles Davis record. I wasn’t too familiar with the Ethiopian ingredients they used and I enjoyed the history and creative thinking that went into coming up with the recipe. They also focused on a bottling machine issue and I was glad to see them present some of the everyday challenges involved in brewery operations. It was actually pretty refreshing to watch their poor packaging guys inspecting cases of bottles, looking for a missing metal piece. It showed a completely unglamorous part of the business and it gave the brewery a more down-to-earth kind of appeal. You don’t always think of the challenges and it’s nice to see ordinary people making an extraordinary product, despite them. It really helps you connect to the brand.

I was worried it might be a big commercial for the brewery but that wasn’t the case at all. If you missed it, I suggest checking it out on iTunes or tuning in to the Discovery Channel tonight – it airs again at 8:00 EST.

If you’ve already watched, feel free to comment and let me know what you thought!
