Revel in Delicious Cheerwine Brownies

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Cheerwine Brownie Recipe

I just had a taste of pure bliss. Cheerwine. Chocolate. Moist, delicious brownies so good, I have to share the recipe. You’re welcome.

Cheerwine Brownies
1 box brownie mix
½ c Cheerwine
1 tsp almond extract
Dark chocolate frosting of your choice (the creamier, the better)

Prepare the brownie mix as directed on the box, substituting Cheerwine for the water. Add almond extract and stir. Pour into a 9×13″ greased pan and bake as directed. Frost thickly once cool and enjoy!

Something so delicious shouldn’t be so simple, but it is. Thanks to Marotto’s for whipping these up for today’s delectable catered lunch!

The Art of the Cocktail at ARTISANworks

The Art of the Cocktail

Yesterday of few of us from KegWorks had the pleasure of attending an afternoon seminar at ARTISANworks titled International Trends in the Craft Cocktail Movement, hosted by Fee Brothers. We’ve long had a relationship with Fee, who makes many of our fine cocktail bitters and mixers, so we couldn’t wait to partner up for this educational opportunity. We had the pleasure of hearing from a panel of distinguished, world-renowned mixologists Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Simon Ford and Allen Katz. More to come on these fine fellows, plus some recipes, in subsequent posts.

The Art of the Cocktail

Joe Fee opened up the seminar with a bit about bitters, and its place in the cocktail. Much like vanilla extract in baked goods, a little bitters goes a long way, adding dimension to whatever you make. We tasted two cocktails with the same ingredients, except one was without Fee Brothers bitters, and the difference was clear. The cocktail that contained bitters had a far more complex flavor, full of spice and one could even better taste the bourbon itself.

The Art of the Cocktail

If you’re making drinks at a bar or even at home and you’re not using bitters, I urge you to take another look at this classic ingredient. Remember the classic definition of a cocktail, after all; liquor, water, sugar and bitters.

The Art of the Cocktail

On a completely un-cocktail-related note, the ARTISANworks in Rochester, NY is quite a sight to behold. If ever you have the opportunity, I most definitely recommend a visit.

Anheuser Busch Buys Goose Island?!

Monday, March 28th, 2011

News travels fast in the beer world. Upon walking back into work from my dentist appointment, exclamations of "Anheuser Busch bought out Goose Island" ring out like a fire alarm. My immediate reaction is a negative one, after all, I would hate to see the quality of Goose Island beers flushed down the tubes.

Goose Island Logo

Further investigation brings me up to speed on Goose Island’s need for more brewing space. According to John Hall, founder and president of Goose Island, "demand for our beers has grown beyond our capacity to serve our wholesale partners, retailers, and beer lovers."

Of course, the idea that any craft brewery would be acquired by the brewing giant begs the question, what about continued quality and innovation? Goose Island brews some of my very favorite craft beers. As aforesaid, I would hate to see the quality deteriorate. John Hall is reportedly to remain CEO, overseeing factory expansion, but will that be enough?

I suppose we’ll just have to see, but I’m leery of the idea entirely.

Celebrity Cocktails: New Fad?

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Seems more and more lately celebrities are conjuring up their own signature cocktails, whether created for them, a la Charlie Sheen’s Tiger’s Blood or "updating" a kiddie "classic" themselves (read: Diddy’s own version of Tiger’s Blood, which is really just cranberry juice and vodka).

Now it seems it’s Matthew McConaughey who’s got what he calls his signature margarita, reportedly saying "I like to whip it up when I’m doing my special barbeque sauce for steak. It satisfies the taste buds in time for the meat." [list.co.uk]

What makes McConaughey’s margarita special? It’s a mix of tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and tonic water, then topped off with cranberry juice. Sounds pretty good, although admittedly, I tend toward a slightly simpler cocktail.

The Drink Marker – As Seen On The Today Show

Drink Markers

The newest addition to our site, The Drink Marker is making waves. Recently featured on The Today Show (check out the segment below, around 2:05), Drink Markers allow you to label your wine glasses, beer bottles and even soda or beer cans so that your drink is never confused or misplaced. The marker won’t wipe off unless you remove it with cooking oil, so you can be sure that you won’t be marking up your hands, clothes or furniture.

They’re not just great for writing your name either – create rad designs on your entire glass if you’re so inclined. Design your own beer bottle label, wash it off with cooking oil and do it again. The possibilities are near endless. Grab a pack of two Drink Markers (one gold, one silver) for just $4.95.

And We Thought We Were the Lucky Ones

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

KegWorks has, since its inception twelve years ago, believed in the power of employee contentment through controlled libations on the job. Of course, we’re not the only ones but apparently it’s more common than even we’d thought.

Pouring draft beer at KegWorks

J2, our Director of IT, sent me this article last night as proof. According to Bloomberg’s report, even high-profile companies like Yelp keep a kegerator full of free beer flowing, all day long, in the office. Employees are free to drink as much or as little as they like, while an iPad app records what each drinks, posting names on a leader board.

While hard liquor isn’t as common in the workplace this day and age, many internet companies offer employees free wine and beer, perhaps because of the oftentimes long, arduous hours worked on a weekly basis. Even Twitter stocks their fridge with libations.

Of course, drinking on the job isn’t all sunshine and lollipops. There is the occasional employee who has more than his or her fill, which can be a cause of concern for employers and coworkers alike. In my opinion, as long as people attempt to be adults about perks like beer, and the company is keeping a watchful eye on employee production, beer in the workplace should be much more commonplace even than it is already.

Oh, and for the record, I still consider KegWorks employees to be some of the luckiest on Earth, even if we’re not the only office with beer on tap.
