Bittermans and Bokers Bitters at KegWorks

First, five new flavors from Bittermens out of Brooklyn, NY. From what we’ve tasted, these guys know flavor:

Bittermens Burlesque Bitters
An enticing mix of hibiscus, açai and long pepper for a one of a kind flavor that’s sweet, spicy a tad tart and perfect in Italian amaros, Mexican tequila, British gin and Caribbean rum.

Bittermens Boston Bittahs
A cleverly named unique combination of citrus and chamomile, perfect for effervescent summer drinks mixed with scotch, pisco or even champagne.

Bittermens ‘Elemakule Tiki Bitters
This tropical blend of cinnamon, allspice and distinctive island spices will find itself at home in most any rum cocktail.

Bittermens Hopped Grapefruit Bitters

Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters
Perfect for whiskeys and dark rums, this blend of cacao, cinnamon and spices is the original Mexican chocolate bitters.

Next up are three bitters flavors from Dr. Adam Elmegirab. Each bottle of bitters is lovingly handmade in Scotland for an unparalleled cocktail experience.

Dr. Adam Elmegirab’s Boker’s Bitters
A reproduction of the recipe from their original founder John G. Boker, Boker’s Bitters have deep roots, enhancing cocktails since 1828. This blend of over-proof spirits, herbs, spices, caramel and seven botanicals including orange peel, quassia bark, catechu, cardamom and mallow flowers, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another cocktail bitters quite like it.

Dr. Adam Elmegirab’s Dandelion & Burdock Bitters
Add the classic British Dandelion and Burdock flavor profile to any cocktail with just a few drops. Blend includes a mix of dandelion root, burdock root, fresh ginger, citrus peel and star anise.

Dr. Adam Elmegirab’s Spanish Cocktail Bitters
This unique blend is like nothing we’ve seen before. The complex handmade recipe using layers of chamomile, citrus, spice, violet, and berries is another reproduction of a recipe from the 1800′s. See what amazingness you can mix up with a few added drops.

Have you had your hands on these already? Tell us about the cocktails you’ve concocted. We’d love to try them!

Ghost Face Killah Beer

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Twisted Pine Brewing, out of Colorado, has developed a pepper-infused wheat dubbed "the hottest beer this side of hell." This limited edition brew’s so hot it’s even been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Ghost Face Killah Beer

Inspired by rapper Ghostface Killah’s name, the beer is brewed with six super-hot peppers, including the hottest pepper in the world, an Indian pepper called Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper). This pepper is so hot in fact that it can actually be considered a weapon, boasting 200x the heat of a jalapeno.

Ghost Face Killah beer will be ready to buy for Cinco de Mayo, but if you want to get your hands on it, move quickly. Only 100 bottles will be available.

Beer at a Baseball Game Done Right

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Enjoying beer at a baseball game might be a favorite American pastime but I think the folks in South Korea have the right idea when it comes to how it’s done.

When we attend a baseball game here in the States, we either leave our seats and walk to a concession stand or we purchase a bottled or canned beer from one of the beer guys in the stands with a heavy case harnessed onto the front of him. (See photo exhibit A)

A friend of our Systems Administrator is currently living in South Korea and sent us these photos. This is how they do beer at their baseball games. (See Photo Exhibit B)

Keg Beer Sold in Baseball Stands

Why drink bottled or canned when we could be enjoying draft like these folks? What a genius idea! There’s even a little refrigeration unit in the pack that keeps the keg cold. We can’t help but wonder how the constant movement doesn’t become an issue but we’re guessing they probably go through the 3-gallon kegs fairly quickly so it’s not a huge deal. The best part is that completely full the whole shebang still only weighs 38 pounds!

Actually, the best part is that you get to enjoy draft beer at the game without leaving your seat. We might just have to start a revolution. Anyone with us?

Wanna See Something Dirty?

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

This. This is why you need to clean your beer lines after every keg.

Dirty Beer Line

Take a closer look. Those are beer stones formed in this yellowed, disgusting beer tube. Can you believe that people were actually drinking draft beer poured from this? Positively vile.

Dirty Beer Line

Don’t let this happen to you. Keep your beer lines clean. It’s quick, easy and your taste buds and stomach will thank you.

The Bar that Brian O’Shea is Building

Monday, April 25th, 2011

One of our favorite customers and blog readers happens to have his own blog, which he uses to keep his friends and family posted on his home bar build (among other things).

Brian O’Shea first posted about his project back in September of 2006 and has been working on the bar ever since. This is what his bar looked like when he first started.

Home Bar Build

By July of 2009, he’d accomplished a lot and "O’Shea’s Neighborhood Bar" looked like this:

Home Bar Build

Now he’s got a new floor, outswing French doors that lead to his yard, a gorgeous wrap around bench and some sweet electronics.

Home Bar Build

It’s awesome to see how far he’s come and we’re always anxious to see what he’ll do next.

If you’d like to follow his progress with us, visit his blog. We’ve already searched "Bar Build Update" for you, so you can see all of the posts related to the project right off the bat. You’re welcome.

Keep up the good work Brian! Your bar rocks.

Summoning Summer: Charmane’s Star Cocktail Recipe

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Pulled straight from the pages of Imbibe Magazine, this cocktail recipe comes to us from Greg Seider of Summit Bar in NYC. It positively screams summertime. Just thinking about sipping on this drink has reggae music running through my mind. Want a taste of utter refreshment? Make it yourself:

Charmane’s Star
2 oz vodka
1 oz fresh lime juice
¾ oz cinnamon spice agave syrup (recipe below)
2 dashes rhubarb bitters
¼” slice of cucumber
5 mint leaves
Ice cubes
Cucumber wheel, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, muddle cucumber and mint. Add lime juice, agave syrup, rhubarb bitters vodka and ice. Shake well. Strain into and ice filled glass and garnish with a cucumber wheel.

Cinnamon Spice Agave Syrup
1 Vietnamese cinnamon stick
4 oz clear agave syrup
4 oz water

Break up cinnamon stick and combine all ingredients into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, remove from heat and let stand, covered for 30 minutes. Strain into a clean jar and keep refrigerated. Use for up to 2 months.

Super-Premium Vodka Made in a Brita Pitcher?

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Vodka on the RocksI recently received an email with a link to this NPR program from 2004 and the discussion was centered on the marketing of top shelf vodkas. As they’re talking about brands and quality, they receive a call from a guy who claims that when filtered through a Brita charcoal filter, pretty much any vodka will taste just as smooth as the super-premium brands. You may need to pour it through 3, 4 or 5 times but apparently the process rids all of the impurities out of unfiltered brands.

The popular show MythBusters put the idea to the test in 2006 and their double-blind taste test proved that the cheap vodka did indeed taste better with every subsequent filtration. However, the top-shelf vodka still beat them all.

A chemical analysis showed no actual difference between the filtered and unfiltered cheap vodka but the idea is still pretty intriguing.

Maybe we’ll have to buy a bottle of Barton’s and bring a Brita into the office to find out first hand. If you’ve tried it already, let us know how well it works for you.

Cheers!
