Homebrew Beer Review: Flanders Red

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

We had a most incredible thunder storm on Sunday. I reached out to the gentleman who sent me homebrews and asked which he recommended I ernjoy during the lightning show. On the spot, he answered "Flanders Red," which we enjoyed together, miles apart.

Flanders Red Homebrew from Brian Gruner

Appearance
Deep russet with ruby tones and a nearly non-existent head, but that may have been my fault, if the glass was not "beer clean."

Aroma
In a word, vinegar – just as it should be. Delightfully sour, in a way that opens up your nasal passages. Can barely wait to take a sip!

Taste
More sour than some others I’ve had. For example, Duchesse de Bourgogne, while having an extremely sour aroma, rounds out with quite a bit of sweetness on the palate. Brian’s Flanders Red is refreshingly sour, with a touch of white grape coming through.

Mouthfeel
Light body with medium-light carbonation. Extremely refreshing. The body smooths out nicely as the brew warms up.

Overall
Another solid homebrew from Brian Gruner. If he were to open a brewery, I’d be among his biggest advocates.

How to Win a Port-O-Pong

Friday, May 27th, 2011

We want to give away one of these awesome floating beer pong tables. We want to have fun with it. We hope you’ll join our contest.

Win a Port-O-Pong Floating Beer Pong Table

Here’s the deal. While you’re busy celebrating the fact that summer is here, make a beer bottle, beer can or beer box creation. Red cup creations will also be considered.

It can be a tower, it can be a helmet, it can be anything you want it to be – just be creative. Take a photo of it, upload it to our Facebook page or send it our way on Twitter (@KegWorks) and we’ll reward the people who submit the coolest one(s) with a brand new beer pong raft.

To ensure we don’t have people yanking existing photos from Google, we’re asking that you write the word "KegWorks" on something (or someone) and make sure that’s included in your photo.

Here’s a very shoddy example of what we’re looking for:

Beer Cup Fortress

Do it up kids. Have fun and Happy Memorial Day! We’ll pick the winner on Tuesday at 12pm EST (once we’ve returned to the office and had enough coffee to complete such an important task.) Stay tuned for the winner.

KegWorks Goes to The Ukrainian Center: A Beer Review

Friday, May 27th, 2011
Liz and Hannah
I call Moose-ears!

It was raining outside to the point of flooding, and I had the hair-do to prove it. The wall was reminiscent of a Cosby sweater and the beer was flowing. KegWorks’ night at the Ukrainian-American Civic Center was all that and a bag of chips.

Obolon Beers

Although many American beers were available, we all decided to enjoy Obolon, from the Ukraine – it seemed only fitting. Every style was consumed, repeatedly. This is KegWorks we’re talking about, after all, and we do enjoy good brews. Of the styles we tried, I especially enjoyed the Obolon Oksamytove, quoted on the bottle as "Obolon Deep Velvet Beer."

Obolon Oksamytove

Appearance
Deep russet with two fingers of off-white head and no visibility through the brew.

Aroma
Sweet and biscuity, like lightly over-baked bread, with a touch of dark fruit.

Taste
Dark, slightly sour cherry flavor really comes through on front and side of tongue through the first part of the sip. Flavor is heavier on malt than hops, offering up a smooth, biscuity finish on the back of the tongue.

Mouthfeel
Medium body with light carbonation, keeping the brew smooth overall.

Overall
This 5.3% Euro Dark Lager reminded me a little of a Belgian dubbel, though not as complex, with far lower ABV. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find this beer, but if I’m at the Ukrainian-American Civic Center, I’d have it again.

Memorial Day Beer and Food Pairing: Altbier and the Grill

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to get outside this weekend and soak in the sun for three days straight (provided we steer clear of the rain). Memorial Day weekend is prime time to fire up the grill, if you haven’t already, and I’ve got the perfect beer to pair with any of the dishes you might whip up.

Loaded Burgers

Altbier, or "old" beer in German, is one of those styles that aren’t always on the radar but, in my opinion, very much should be. Aroma-wise, altbier features agreeable notes of hops, a biscuity backbone and at times, a touch of fruit. Once you have a sip, you’re treated to a clean, balanced flavor that’s malty with a fresh, hard, bitter kick of hops. With its medium body and desiccant finish, altbier is surprisingly smooth, despite the hops bitterness.

A staple of Memorial Day for many people is sausages, hot dogs and hamburgers. Altbier can stand up to the test of any of these, even if they’re loaded with toppings – in fact, I wholly recommend it. If fish is more your style, pair altbier with grilled salmon or tuna. Even south-of-the-border-style Memorial Day parties will benefit from having altbier on hand, as it’s great with spicy dishes like tacos, burritos, fajitas and the like. I tend to take to grilling pizzas in my backyard during the summer and this beer style never steers me wrong.

Looking for a good altbier to try? Long Trail Double Bag is one of my favorites, but Deron’s got a list of his own too.

Drinks in the Clink

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

I’ve heard stories of prisoners enjoying cable tv and other such luxuries (which I wholeheartedly disagree with—I don’t even have cable and I’m definitely not in jail) but this Mexican prison story takes the cake.

Drinks in the Clink

Police discovered a full-blown bar on Monday at a prison in Chihuahua City, according to cbsnews.com. And when I say "bar," I mean 200 beer cans, 12 bottles of tequila and 20 bottles of vodka. That’s quite a feat for a bar behind bars. What’s more? Even a billiard table was smuggled in!

Needless to say, guards at the prison are under investigation. As for the inmates, I suppose they’ll have to find another way to while away their time in the big house.

Straight Talk with Jim Beam

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Anyone who follows this blog knows that I’m a bit of an ad geek. There’s few things in this world that I love more than a solid, creative, well executed advertisement that catches your attention and makes it impossible to miss the message. These ads from Jim Beam do that for me.

As a copywriter, I’m especially fond of advertisements that allow the headline to shine and these all qualify. I must also note that personally, I feel that this is an important message. I’m all for being comfortable with who you are and drinking what you like but at the same time, I will disclose that I once went on a date with a manly looking gentleman who ordered a pink, girlie drink and that act alone caused me to lose his number pretty quickly. Judge me if you must – at least I know Jim Beam agrees.

Bourbon is a strong, masculine drink and these ads capture that, hone it and drill it home. Cheers to that.
