10 Signs You’re a Beer Snob

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

There’s a difference between being a beer lover and an elitist d-bag. Here are 10 signs to indicate that you may have crossed the line.

1. After mowing the lawn you consume an Arrogant Bastard because you have trouble admitting that a light beer is worthy

2. You’ve gone from simply critiquing other people’s beer choices to critiquing the beer AND their glassware choice

3. You don’t bother asking bartender(s) for recommendations because you assume you’re the one who should be schooling them

4. You won’t even consider purchasing a six-pack that costs less than $12

5. Your pets, boats and/or children have beer-related names

6. You can pronounce "Reinheitsgebot" and work it into everyday conversation whenever possible

7. You make unsolicited suggestions to others shopping in the beer aisle

8. You’ve left a party because the selection wasn’t up to your standards

9. You can’t seem to socialize at a bar without getting preachy

10. You’re feeling defensive after reading this list

Breckenridge Has More Funny Ads on Tap

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Last week we posted what we thought was a hilarious "Truth in Beervertising" ad from the very clever folks at Breckenridge Brewery. We were thirsty for more (wondering how many puns one blog post can contain, are you? Prepare to be amazed) and after viewing the other three ads, we take great pleasure in reporting that they’ve officially raised the bar with this campaign. Whoever drafted the scripts for these things is one smooth hoperator. We can’t help but wonder what else they’ve got brewing… perhaps we’ll ponder it over a bottle of their Pandora’s Bock later.

Here’s the Gravity Activated Pouring System spot to get you started. Enjoy!

College Students Concept a Bottle Opener that Invites Your Friends Over

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Two students from the Miami Ad School in Hamburg, Germany created the video below for a class project. Their concept? A social bottle opener that connects to your Facebook account via Bluetooth and creates an event at your location. Your friends can RSVP to say whether or not they’re attending and whoever has the most people at their party receives a free case of Heineken that weekend. Sounds like a bit of an adult popularity contest but overall, it’s a pretty cool idea. Think they’ll make it happen?

Having a Dinner Party? Use Our Beer and Food Pairing Guide

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

More and more people everyday are beginning to explore the wondrously complex world of craft and imported beers. As we delve into our journeys, unlocking the flavors of previously unplumbed styles, we desire to enjoy said beers with our meals. The question therefore that begs to be asked is, which foods pair best with which beers?

My general rules on pairing beer and food are the following:

1. Choose a beer that can stand up to the flavor and intensity of the food you’re eating, but not one that will completely overshadow your dish. If the beer will get lost completely, or if it completely overpowers the food, choose another style.

2. Don’t necessarily try to pair beers with foods of the same flavor profile. Think of flavors that compliment rather than resemble one another.

3. Don’t be afraid to try pairing styles with foods that other people might not recommend; at the end of the day, all that matters is which beer and food combinations taste good to you.

Need a little help getting started? Our Beer and Food Pairing Guide is here for you, whatever the occasion. I even have it bookmarked on my phone so that when I’m buying food to pair with beer at home (or vice versa) I can always be sure that I’m choosing a winning combination. Of course, I’ll never be afraid to experiment with new beer and food pairings, and either should you.

Cheers!

When the Pirates Lose, Beer Drinkers Win

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

A sign outside of Pittsburgh’s Stroll Inn reads, "If the Pirates lose, you win," alerting passers-by of a promotion that plays on the Pirates’ 19 year losing streak. [bucsdugout.com]

Apparently for every game the MLB team loses, the pub knocks another 5¢ off of the price of a pitcher of beer. A regular customer of the Stroll Inn was quoted in saying that they’re "having fun, trying to bring in more people, actually, to come and watch the games."

As a diehard Buffalo Bills fan, I know a thing or two about losing streaks. While some people may have felt that a promotion such as this is disrespectful, I think it’s a funny way to get people out of their houses and into the establishment. Just because patrons get a little something extra when their team loses doesn’t mean they’re not still rooting for the team.

Cheers to the Stroll Inn for their creative marketing effort and for not letting such a long losing streak get them down.

American Craft Beer Week 2011

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Today begins American Craft Beer Week, 2011. For the first time in history, all 50 states are participating, offering even more proof that good beer is here to stay. This is the fifth official year of American Craft Beer Week and happily, participation by both brewers and consumers has grown greatly.

American Craft Beer Week 2011

Of course, this particular beer week is just one of many that are celebrated through the US each year. Many cities throw their own craft beer celebrations at different times because, let’s face it, beer should be revered more than just 7 days out of the year.

Cities and states that will be hosting their own festivals to coincide with this year’s American Craft Beer Week include Minnesota, Long Island, Nevada, San Antonio, Chicago and Seattle.

What will you be doing to celebrate craft beer this week? At the very least, try something new and introduce some friends to the wonder that is non-mass-produced brew.

Cheers!

The Recovery of Discovery: Gaillard’s Beer Pyramid

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Pete (KegWorks draft beer guru and model) sent me a link to artobserved.com this morning, featuring a French artist’s latest work in Berlin.

Cyprien Gaillard Beer Pyramid

Cyprien Gaillard’s piece, The Recovery of Discovery is a piece that displays engagement with the built environment and its destruction. Created from hundreds of cases of beer—72,000 bottles to be exact—Gaillard’s pyramid will actually complete itself through destruction. The exhibit opened on March 27, when visitors were invited to rush the pyramid of beer, open boxes and drink what they like. This piece of art will be in a continued state of extirpation through May 22, 2011.

Cyprien Gaillard Beer Pyramid

From the opening of the exhibit, "viewers have climbed onto the beer-box pyramid, which is easy given that the boxes form a natural step. When opening a box, or grabbing a beer from an already open box, the viewer participates in the removal of a single architectural piece of the installation, and adds to its destruction."

The beer pyramid is now in ruins, glass smashed everywhere, boxes tossed around without care. Gaillard has done installations of this nature before, and I for one hope he continues in these endeavors, for the love of art and the love of beer.
