Brooklyn Brewmaster’s Reserve: The Tonic

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Soon to debut (think June), the next beer up in Brooklyn Brewery’s Brewmaster’s Reserve series is The Tonic. As reported in beernews.org, this newest addition was inspired by a cocktail created by Sam Ross at NYC’s Milk & Honey. Sam Ross even came to Brooklyn Brewery to help brew the new beer and capture his cocktail’s full flavor profile.

Brooklyn Brewmasters Reserve The Tonic

The influencing cocktail is called the Penicillin, and it’s made up of Scotch, ginger infused honey and fresh lemon juice. As Brooklyn Brewery puts it, "it’s an improbable blend, but it’s delicious." Since the government wouldn’t let them call their newest Brewmaster’s Reserve ‘Penicillin,’ they’re going with The Tonic, which seems quite fitting.

What’s going into this brand new brew?

Malts
English Peat Smoked Malt, English Pale Malt, German Pilsner Malt

Hops
Willamette, Cascades, Fuggles, Kent Goldings, Simcoe, Citra, Sorachi Ace, Amarillo

Additions
Dried lemon peel, minced ginger, NYS wildflower honey, organic sicilian lemon juice

Brooklyn Brewery will begin to ship kegs of The Tonic during the last week of May. Keep an eye out at your local pubs!

MEOW! The Black Cat Cocktail

Friday, May 13th, 2011

We’re not superstitious but we do love any reason to try out a new cocktail. This Friday the 13th, actually enjoy your run in with a black cat or two in the form of a cocktail.

Black Cat Cocktail

Black Cat Cocktail

1 oz blue curacao
1 oz vodka
3 oz lemon lime soda
1 oz cranberry juice
½ oz freshly squeezed lime juice
Lime twist for garnish

Fill a shaker halfway with ice. Add curacao, vodka and lime juice. Shake until mixed well. Add soda and stir. Pour cranberry juice into a tall glass. Over the back of a spoon, gently strain the mixed ingredients over the cranberry juice, being careful not to completely mix the two for presentation. Serve with a cocktail stirrer and a lime twist for garnish.

Cheers!

4 Tips for Surviving an Awful Draft List

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

It happens to the best of us. You’re out with your friends, you’re craving a good beer and you realize that the draft list totally sucks.

Here’s what you do:

1. Look for the Local – No matter where you are, there’s bound to be a regional or state beer that’s pretty good. Even chain restaurants usually have them on tap. Whether it’s Yuengling, Sam Adams, Harpoon or a smaller craft brewery, it’s probably going to be one of your best options.

2. Look for the Foreign – Sure, some foreign beers are terrible but generally speaking, most are decent. British beer is my personal favorite and Asian beers are usually pretty good too. Regardless of the nationality, it’s bound to be better than the alternative.

3. Check the Bottle & Can List – In my opinion, canned beer doesn’t get enough credit. There’s a lot of great canned options out there and bars and restaurants are more likely to buy craft beer in bottles and cans seeing as the cost is much lower than if they were to purchase a keg that didn’t sell.

4. Opt for a beer cocktail – or a regular cocktail. If they have Guinness and a cider, ask the bartender to mix those. Try cider and lager, or Guinness and lager. Heck, order a Jack and Coke if you like those. Just don’t settle.

Beer Consumption: Stats on Tap

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Who doesn’t love a good infographic? I came across this one and even though the by state consumption stats are a bit outdated (they’re from 2008) – it’s still interesting and informative. Just find your home state (or any state you’re curious about) and you can identify the gallons consumed per capita by matching up the color with its corresponding bottle.

Personally, I enjoy how Utah has the word "Mormons" written over the top of it – as if we didn’t all know why they have the lowest consumption rate. Why didn’t they write "Sinners" over Reno? Just kidding.

I’m actually surprised that New Hampshire has such crazy consumption. Can anyone explain that? Either way, enjoy!

Just in time for Father’s Day and college graduations, our brand new, officially licensed Guinness beer stein has arrived. Crafted of high quality pewter, this beauty sports a harp-shaped handle and holds one full pint of the good stuff.

How about we sweeten the deal and offer this bad bear up for $15 off? For a limited time, you can grab your Guinness pewter tankard for just $34.95. My goodness, I could go for a Guinness right now.

Cheers!

Breckenridge Brewery Ad Mocks Big Beer

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Breckenridge Brewery, brewer of craft beers out of Colorado, pokes fun of big beer ads (read: Coors, Bud and the like) with a simply executed commercial. The ‘Truth in Beervertising’ campaign of four ads actually only cost $10K. I laughed out loud at this particular spot. Well done, Breckenridge Brewery. Enjoy!
