Dave’s Mind-Blowing Surprise Day

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Months ago our fearless leader shot out a company-wide email, telling us to keep June 28th open because he was treating us to a "mind-blowing surprise." We patiently (and excitedly) waited for the day to come, spitballing ideas for what Dave could possibly be up to.

None of us were even close.

Dave surprised us all with a day of riding Segways, a visit from Lloyd’s Taco Truck and some gourmet cupcakes. Mind-blowing indeed!

We cannot thank Dave enough for such a rad day and excellent surprise.

Ohioans in Need of Some Beer Love

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Ohio legislators’ last minute decision to keep from passing a law that allows beer up to 18% ABV to be sold in the state leaves craft brew lovers frustrated and wondering why the committee would want to eliminate the extra state tax dollars they could be raising. [daytondailynews.com]

Not only are connoisseurs distraught about missing out on some of our nation’s most noble beers, but money for high-test brews will simply head to other states. In the opinion of pub and store owners alike, the decision is simply a lose/lose situation. As stated by owner of Belmont Party Supply, Mike Schwartz, said, "That money is just going to go to other states. I don’t understand it. I’m selling a 151-proof rum that contains more than 75 percent alcohol, so who are they trying to protect by limiting beer?" As it stands, Ohio is stuck buying beers up to only 12% alcohol by volume.

It seems high octane craft beers still have quite a battle ahead in trying to distinguish themselves from the definition of "beer" as laid out by the low ABV macro brews. Despite offering the consumer at least as many, or more, aromatic compounds and flavors as good wine or liquor, high ABV craft beers continue to be looked upon as a beverage that needs regulation. In my opinion, this is simply because the mass-produced recipes before them have always hovered around the 5.5% ABV mark, making them an easy choice for young or binge drinkers.

Just as beer has changed with the craft beer revolution, so should our viewpoint of it.

Guinness: Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

The tagline for this Guinness ad is "Good Things Come to Those Who Wait" but, before I reached the end where the tagline was displayed, I was thinking the idea behind the ad might be that the evolution of man culminates with a tasty pint of Guinness. Whether it’s that or simply that the wait for a pint of Guinness to properly settle is absolutely worth it, as the tag suggests, the ad itself is an interesting one. Enjoy.

Save a Horse, Ride Your Cooler?

Monday, June 27th, 2011

I love social media. We posted about jockey boxes on our Facebook page and a fan by the name of David Pinsent commented with a link to this crazy YouTube video on the Cruzin Cooler, a new product featured on the Discovery Channel.

These motorized beverage holders move up to 27 kilometers (about 16 miles) an hour. Watch the video or check out the Cruzin Cooler website for all of the details. What will they think of next?

Black & Tan Cookie Bars

Friday, June 24th, 2011

We love the folks over at Uncrate and they certainly made our mouths water with this post on Black & Tan Cookie Bars. They consist of a Guinness fudge stout brownie topped with a Bass-infused butterscotch ale ganache, and it’s all topped off with a crunchy salted pretzel.

Black and Tan Cookie Bars

They look amazing but $40 plus shipping for 12 of them seems pretty steep. Anyone else thinking they’ll try to recreate their own? We might just have to try it.

Sixpoint Cans Have Barcodes Like No Other

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

In college I interned for a well-known toy company. As a writer, the last place I expected to be placed was the packaging department. I quickly learned just how much thought, design, engineering and consideration goes into making something that’s ultimately thrown away. It’s pretty intense.

When our awesome IT Director pointed out that Sixpoint Brewery (in Brooklyn) would be using vanity barcodes on their new cans, I was instinctively intrigued. The artsy barcodes are designed to resemble the NYC skyline (even Lady Liberty makes an appearance) and each one is entirely scannable.

Six Point Brewery NYC Barcodes

Just yesterday, the Wall Street Journal ran an article titled Art in Aisle 5: Barcodes Enter Expressionist Period

According to their report, "When Sixpoint Brewery planned to launch a line of canned beer this year, the Brooklyn, N.Y., company set out to fashion the perfect can design. It soon realized, ‘you need this big, ugly barcode so people can scan them,’ says Shane Welch, president of Mad Scientists Brewing Partners LLC, which owns Sixpoint. ‘I thought, why can’t we do our own custom barcode?’ Launched last month, the silver cans bear a barcode that integrates the Statue of Liberty and skyscrapers."

Way to stand out and make the customer experience a little more enjoyable, Sixpoint. Everything I’ve heard about the brewery and the beer is fresh, innovative and exciting. Hope to pick up some of those cans soon.

Coffee Milk: A Rhode Island Favorite

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

KegWorks’ fearless owner, Dave, has a knack for finding cult-worthy drinkables to share with everyone who happens upon our site. First came Blenheim Ginger Ale. Born and bottled in South Carolina, this soda has a hot ginger kick like no other and a following to boot. People who’ve had a taste search high and low for ways of enjoying Blenheim’s in their own home town. Dave heard their cries and answered with an easy way to ship the delicious beverage just about anywhere in the globe.

Next came Cheerwine. One of the most delicious sodas to slip through my lips, Cheerwine is a caffeinated cherry pop that’s made with pure cane sugar, which helps push it to out-of-this-world status. It even tastes great in brownies and grilling marinades! We have the fine folks in North Carolina to thank for this sweet softdrink.

Autocrat Coffee Milk

The newest addition from Dave’s explorations is actually the state drink of Rhode Island, coffee milk. Autocrat Coffee Syrup comes straight from the tiny state itself, and has even been voted "Best Product Made in Rhode Island." Coffee milk is exactly what it sounds like – coffee-flavored milk. If you live in Rhode Island or have happened to visit there, I’ve no doubt in my mind that you’ve crossed this delicious beverage. All you need is cold milk and a few squirts of coffee syrup and you’re enjoying a Rhode Island favorite.

Random bit of knowledge for you all: most states that specify a state drink list milk as their official beverage. Nebraska lists two; milk and Kool-Aid (oddly enough). Indiana’s state drink? Water (ok, but a tad boring). Alabama brings it home with their own distilled whiskey (now we’re talking!).
