Breaking Beer News – AB InBev to Brew Bass for the U.S. Market

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

According to an intercepted letter, AB InBev has plans to start brewing the popular and historic import Bass Pale Ale in the United States at their Baldwinsville, NY brewery. Bass Pale Ale is one of the most notable English beers and its red triangle logo was actually England’s first registered trademark.

Bass Ale in the USA

Beernews.org reports that AB InBev explained, "In 2012, we will reintroduce Bass to consumers by investing in a variety of liquid innovations, packaging options and unique taste experiences. These actions will allow expansion of the brand in the United States and make Bass a more formidable competitor in the high end. To set the stage, we will begin brewing Bass for the U.S. market at the Baldwinsville brewery in June. This change will result in an immediate and significant benefit for wholesalers and retailers while requiring some minor adjustments at retail to accommodate the transition."

So what does that mean for us here in the US? Not only will they switch from the European to the standard U.S. half barrel (adding approximately 25 additional 16 oz servings to each keg) the current keg coupler will change from a G System valve to the standard D System and distribution will likely increase.

Root Beer on Tap at Blues Burger in York Beach

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

We’d like to think that the only people more creative than us are our loyal customers. Everyday customers get in touch with us to help solve their unique dilemmas. Trust me, when I say unique, I mean it in every sense of the word. We love to hear about how our customers are actually using our products so we can share those unique ideas with others.

Blues Burger in York Beach Maine

To show you just what I mean, take a look at this standard chrome draft beer tower, purchased from KegWorks just last week. At first glance, it might not seem out of the ordinary, but take a closer look at that tap handle. Using one of our jockey boxes and draft beer towers, the guys at Blues Burger in York Beach, Maine are serving up some tasty Captain Eli’s Root Beer on draft for their customers this summer. The sugary suds are a product of Shipyard Brewing Co. and are a great compliment to Blues Burger’s delicious spread of American burgers, hand-cut fries, and homemade milk shakes.

My hat’s off to these guys. They had a great idea and ran with it. I’m just glad we could help them fulfill their vision. I think it goes without saying that this draft root beer is going to be a big hit up in York Beach.

If you have your own unique story with a product you purchased from KegWorks, let us know. Maybe this article will inspire you to start pouring your own root beer or share your story with us.

Houston Beer Fest Oversells Its Venue by 8000 Tickets

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

I’ve mentioned on more than one occasion that the craft beer scene in Texas is growing exponentially but DAMN! The venue for Houston’s recent beer fest was to hold 12,000 attendees, yet somehow, 20,000 tickets were sold.

Houston Beer Fest 2011

20,000 attendees! They lined up for blocks waiting just to get into the festival, not to mention the ridiculously long lines for each vendor, according to blogs.houstonpress.com.

While I’m excited to see so very many people taking interest in craft beer in Houston, I can’t help but wish the tickets hadn’t been oversold. No one should endure lines that long in heat like Houston’s, ever. Hopefully event planners next year can find a larger venue or at least keep to their prescribed cap.

Award-Winning Beer Cocktail from Imbibe Magazine

Monday, June 13th, 2011

David Delaney, mixologist at The Citizen Wine Bar in Worcester, MA, concocted this recipe as a way to show how old and new ingredients (even beer!) can come together harmoniously. He submitted his recipe to the editors of Imbibe Magazine and won the 2011 Imbibe Cover Cocktail Contest.

Imbibe Cocktail Cover

I’ve yet to see a beer cocktail quite like this one. I cannot wait to give it a taste.

Charentes Shrub

1½ oz rye whiskey
¾ oz Earl Grey-infused Pineau des Charentes (recipe below)
½ oz rosemary-pineapple shrub (recipe below)
½ oz fresh lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura orange bitters
2 oz IPA
Pineapple slice and rosemary sprig, for garnish

Add whiskey, infused Pineau des Charentes, shrub, lemon juice and bitters to a shaker. Add ice and shake well. Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass. Top with IPA, garnish and enjoy.

Tea-infused Pineau des Charentes
Soak 1 Early Grey teabag in half a 750ml bottle of Pineau for 1½ hours.

Rosemary-pineapple shrub
Slice a small pineapple, place slices in a jar and cover with cider vinegar. Infuse for 4 days, being sure to shake once per day. Filter through cheesecloth and bring 6 oz of the pineapple vinegar, with 5 oz of bar sugar, to a boil in a saucepan. Once sugar has dissolved, skim off the top layer and add 1 sprig of fresh rosemary. Boil 10 more minutes and remove from heat. Filer and cool shrub before bottling.

True Life: I May Have a Foot Rail Fetish

Monday, June 13th, 2011

On Thursday night I had the pleasure of hitting up the opening night festivities at Roc Brewing Co., Rochester NY’s newest microbrewery. I’ll be sure write more about the event (and the beer) later but I’m dedicating this particular post to their foot rails.

Bar Foot Rails at Roc Brewing Co.

You may have noticed that we make a big deal about foot rails around here. We really do subscribe to the belief that no bar is finished until it has one. Foot rails (and purse hooks) will both vastly improve the comfort and convenience levels of a bar. I tend to feel let down when bars don’t have one. I guess they’re one of those things that people tend to take for granted – you might not think about how great foot rails are until you’re sitting at a bar that doesn’t have one.

The bar in the Roc Brewing Co. tasting room does have one — and it’s awesome. People typically stick to one type of finish but to match their "industic" (a harmonious union of industrial and rustic) décor, they opted to do brushed stainless steel tubing with brushed brass components.

Bar Foot Rails at Roc Brewing Co.

Call me a purist if you will but I was a bit skeptical about how it would look before I saw it installed. I stand corrected. The multi-tone bar was crafted from stunning reclaimed wood, and the foot rail they chose really works.

Speaking of that reclaimed wood, I had a chance to chat with the Pioneer Millworks team that supplied it (over a beer of course) and not only are they great people, they’ve got an awesome catalog of fantastic recycled wood products. If you’re working on a bar, I suggest checking them out for inspiration.

I snapped a few pictures of the rail to give you an idea of what I’m talking about and people were definitely wondering what I was up to, crouched low to the ground with my camera aimed at their feet. I hope some of them read this and understand that it’s not anything weird, I just really like foot rails.

A Facebook ‘Buy Your Friend a Beer’ App

Friday, June 10th, 2011

I may do everything in my power to steer clear of chain restaurants, but I can’t help but think that TGI Friday’s has the right idea with their new ‘Buy Your Friend a Beer’ Facebook application. In fact, I hope that local, non-chain establishments might take a cue from this and consider offering a similar deal in the future.

Friends with Beer

Facebook users 21 and over can use the app to send $5 e-gift cards to friends and family, redeemable at any TGI Friday’s for beer, food or non-alcoholic beverage of choice. As for the beer, Friday’s is even extending their normally lacking beer selection to include regional craft favorites like Goose Island Honkers Ale, New Belgium Fat Tire, Harpoon IPA and more.

Want to get in on the ‘Buy Your Friend a Beer’ action? Stop on by TGI Friday’s Facebook page, hit the ‘like’ button and you can buy up to 5 beers for anyone you know, providing they (and again, you) are at least 21 years of age.

Here’s hoping that other restaurants and pubs, especially one-off local favorites, start playing around with social media this way. This day and age, I can’t think of a better way than tapping into Facebook, Twitter and the like to bring more customers to the table.
