A Goodbye to Gerg

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Today’s post goes out to Greg, lovingly known at KegWorks and on this blog as ‘Gerg’ (and all these years you thought it was a typo).

KegWorks’ photographer extraordinaire and SEO, Gerg is leaving us for new and different opportunities and we all wish him the very best. Of course, a proper KegWorks goodbye couldn’t go without burgers and beer, hence photos of our raucous farewell lunch. I apologize in advance because I most definitely caught everyone in the act of mowing food. We’re a hungry bunch.

Is Most “American Beer” a Big, Giant Sham?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

The popular website Gawker.com published an article titled Drunk Americans Display Patriotism by Buying Foreign Beer.

Budweiser American AleThe gist of the piece is that people are led to believe they’re drinking "American beer" and supporting the American economy when they drink Budweiser, Miller and other Anheuser-Busch or MillerCoors products, when the fact is that the American brewing industry is actually dominated and controlled by foreign interests.

The largest U.S.-owned company that makes and sells American beer is Rochester, N.Y.-based North American Breweries, which only has 1.2% share of the U.S. market with brands like Genesee and Magic Hat.

The article gently reminds you that no matter how many American flags you see in the commercials, the money you spend on Bud, Coors and Miller High Life ultimately ends up in British, Canadian, Belgian or Brazilian hands. The "foreign hands clutching our precious American dollars in one hand, and with the other hand making more patriotic All-American flag-waving commercials targeted at you, the drunk American beer sheep."

Are you a sheep? Is the article onto something? All I can say is that I’m glad to be the kind of person who primarily drinks craft beer and local microbrews. I know where my money’s going – and for the most part, it’s staying close to home.

20/20 Vision: Portsmouth Brewery Celebrates 20 Years

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Portsmouth Brewery in New Hampshire has quite a bit to celebrate: 20 long years in craft brewing, culminating today with a 20-year anniversary celebration. How will they be commemorating this grand occasion? With a special new beer, brewed by 20 craft brewers, touting 20 varieties of hops and 20 different malts. That’s how.

Portsmouth Brewery

According to seacoastonline.com, Portsmouth Brewery brewmaster Tod Mott gathered together 19 of his craft brewer friends just two and a half months ago, to create an imperial brown ale like none other. Weighing in at 10.1% ABV, it’s strong like a barley wine but smooth in body, as one usually finds in a well-crafted brown ale.

I only moved back from Portland, Maine just 5 years ago and while I was there, I spent many an evening at Portsmouth’s brew pub, just a short drive south. I have a hankering to join in these festivities, so don’t be surprised if I somehow end up on the road, headed north, this weekend.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Portsmouth Brewery and here’s to many, many more!
