Super Classy Strawberry Margarita Jell-O Shooters

Friday, July 29th, 2011

I found this incredible, impressive recipe for Strawberry Margarita Jell-O Shooters on the Bakers Royale site and it’s too fun not to share:

Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots

Strawberry Margarita Jell-O Shooters

Yields 24-30 Shooters

Strawberry Prep
1. Cut the bottoms of the strawberry flat to get them to stand upright – just don’t create a hole at the bottom

2. Use a melon baller or apple corer to empty out the strawberry guts

3. Once emptied, use a towel to pat the outside of the strawberries dry

4. Check each strawberry for holes before you start filling

Margarita Mix
3 oz Box Strawberry Jell-O
8 oz tequila, preferably reposado or blanco
6 oz Cointreau
Salt for garnish

Instructions
1. Boil one cup of hot water in a saucepan, add in Jell-O powder and whisk until powder is completely dissolved (about 2 minutes) then set aside

2. Measure out 1/4 cup of cold water and set aside

3. Combine tequila and Cointreau, in cocktail shaker filled with ice

4. Add liquor mixture to cold water and stir to combine

5. Add cold liquor mixture to hot Jell-O mixture and stir to combine

6. Pour final Jell-o mix into strawberries and chill overnight

7. Dip your finger in water or use a moistened brush to wet the edge of the strawberries, dip and rotate the strawberries in salt to rim

8. Garnish with cut lime triangles to finish

Totally Worth Drinking: Flying Dog Woody Creek White

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Every once in a while I become borderline obsessed with a particular beer. My most recent fixation goes by the name of Woody Creek White. The folks at Flying Dog have impressed me once again and I just can’t seem to get enough.

Flying Dog Woody Creek White

I’ve had the witbier on draft and out of the bottle and both were great. It pours with a lot of white fluffy head and once it dissipates, there’s really gorgeous lacing on the glass. The color is an enticing cloudy yellow.

If I had to pick a more widely known beer to compare it to, I’d go with Hoegaarden – bready, yeasty with some citrus mixed in. It’s rather mellow and weighs in at 4.8% ABV making it my new favorite summer session beer.

Gran Inka: A Brand Spankin’ New Beer Cocktail

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

In reviewing beer and cocktail news over the week, I happened upon an article on chicagotribune.com touting new beer cocktails that simply blow the standard shandy clear out of the water. The recipe for Gran Inka really caught my interest, so I decided to share it with you. It’s got such an interesting flavor combination that I’ve absolutely got to try it.

Gran Inka

¾ oz hot pepper-infused pisco (see below)
¼ oz ginger liqueur
1 dash grapefruit bitters
4 oz amber ale
Lemon twist, for garnish

Fill a mixing glass about ¾ of the way with ice and add pisco, ginger liqueur and bitters. Stir well, until cold. Slowly add cold beer and stir for about 10 seconds. Strain into a pilsner glass and top off with more beer, if necessary. Slide your lemon twist over the rim of the glass, garnish and enjoy.

To create hot pepper-infused pisco:

Add 3 or 4 sliced of jalapeno or serrano peppers, with seeds, to a 750ml bottle of pisco. Let stand at room temperature for at least 3 days (the longer it stands, the spicier it will be).

The Casablanca Champagne Cocktail

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Champagne is oftentimes a person’s first thought when pondering celebratory drinks, but it shouldn’t be relegated to only such events. One of my very best friends even pops a bottle when she comes by for a swim.

Just as champagne shouldn’t only be drank in celebration, it shouldn’t always have to be enjoyed all on its own. Champagne makes an exquisite base in cocktails. In fact, it’s been a classic cocktail ingredient since before the turn of the (19th) century. Try your hand at concocting the very same Champagne Cocktail as was enjoyed in the classic film, Casablanca.

Casablanca Champagne Cocktail

Champagne Cocktail
1 bitters-soaked sugar cube
1 oz brandy or cognac
Brut champagne
Twist of lemon, for garnish

Place your sugar cube on top of the bitters bottle. While holding it in place with your finger, flip the bottle upside down until the sugar cube is saturated. Drop the sugar cube into a champagne flute and add your cognac or brandy. Top with Brut champagne, garnish with lemon and enjoy.

Russia Finally Admits Beer Is Not a Food

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Back in February, Hannah blogged about Russia preparing to reclassify beer as alcohol. Five months later, it’s actually happened.

Up until now, the government ruled that any drink with an alcohol content of less than 10% was foodstuff. That meant beer wasn’t regulated as an alcoholic beverage. Considering the levels of alcoholism in Russia are currently double the critical level as determined by the World Health Organization, this new classification is probably a good thing.

On Wednesday President Dmitry Medvedev finally signed legislation stating that all drinks with alcoholic content higher than 0.5% will now be classified as alcoholic and subject to new rules and sales restrictions.

Russian President

Last year the Russian beer industry was hit by a 200% tax hike on its products in an attempt to create some control. The new law won’t actually come into effect until 2013 when unlicensed kiosks will no longer be able to sell alcohol, stores will have to cease alcohol sales between 11pm and 8am and radio and television ads for alcoholic drinks will be banned.

According to the BBC, "correspondents say it is common to see people swigging beer in the street and in parks as if they are drinking soft drinks."

Hopefully these new measures will help to get the rampant alcohol abuse under control.

Sell-Out or Smart Move?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

50-year-old legendary Australian cricketer David Boon, known to many as the "keg on legs," seems to be giving up the suds for more spending money. [dailyindia.com] Boon originally got his old nickname from, reportedly, drinking 52 cans of beer, back in 1989, during a flight from Sydney to London. Impressive, right? Sounds like the stuff that legends are made of, if you ask me.

David Boon Canadian Club Ad

Boon is now to be the face of Canadian Club whiskey, advertising to fans that his new favorite drink is Canadian Club Dry, instead of beer. He’s quoted as saying, "deciding to be a part of the Canadian Club Over Beer? campaign wasn’t a hard one. I think it’s a good product which I enjoy drinking, so I’m happy to put my face to it. The campaign’s not about knocking beer."

I don’t know about you, but the very name of the campaign seems to be ‘knocking beer,’ as it were. Sure, peoples’ tastes change and I, for one, definitely enjoy good whiskey as well as good beer. Such a drastic flip of the switch seems to be a bit of a sell-out, is all. I mean, Boon goes from being the face of Australian beer as recently as 2007, to declaring that he’s ‘over beer’ for the Canadian Club campaign. Despite his claims disputing the idea, it sure does feel like money was a major player in his decision.

What do you think?
