Houston Beer Lovers: Support Open The Taps

Monday, July 18th, 2011

As a craft beer lover and advocate, you may have heard a bit about Texas’ battle against antiquated laws that hold back Texas breweries and distributors alike. This year, two bills that would give more leniency for brewpubs and microbreweries have been squashed; House Bill 660 and HB 602.

House Bill 660 would have given Texas brewpubs the right to sell their delicious beer off-premises. The bill was not passed, so these businesses can still only sell beer from their pubs. The worst part about this is that out-of-state brewpubs are allowed to bottle their beers and have them distributed to stores in Texas, while Texas’ own brewpubs cannot. Why would a state not want to give their own brewpubs an equal chance?

House Bill 602 would have given Texas microbreweries the ability to (in a way) sell their beers on-premises. Technically they still couldn’t sell their beers, but they would’ve been able to give visitors up to 12 bottled beers at the end of a paid tour. This bill would’ve gone into effect for breweries that product 75K barrels or less per year. Sadly, not even this bill was passed, leaving these small businesses in an antiquated lurch.

Open the Taps

Enter Open the Taps. According to Leslie Sprague, Open the Taps’ Secretary/Media Relations, "the recent demise of [the two bills] that would have significantly improved the horizon for the Texas craft beer industry, coupled with the outdated restrictions on the industry, led a few citizens to band together to garner real change in our state laws to benefit the craft beer community."

The grassroots organization hopes that "by approaching legislative change from the consumer side, as opposed to from within the industry, [they'll] reach more Texas residents on a personal level in order to bring change from the ground-up, unifying voters and consumers into one voice."

Cheers to Houston citizens banding together for change in craft beer and best of luck to them in spreading awareness of their efforts across the state!

Stone, Baird and Ishii Brew Collaboration to Aid Japan

Monday, July 18th, 2011

In an effort to raise money for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan, three craft brewers have come together for an IPA collaboration. Japan-based Baird Brewing and Guam-based Ishii Brewing Co. (self-described as the ‘smallest brewery in the world’) traveled to Stone Brewing Co. to brew up a Green Tea IPA. Proceeds from the beer will go to relief efforts in Japan.

The beer, which is available now, weighs in at 9.2% ABV and features Crystal and Warrior hops from the US and it’s dry-hopped along with the green tea for an added kick of delicious flavor. I hope all of you craft beer lovers join me in picking up a few of these. Even small efforts can mean a lot to those in need.

Cheers!

Living the High Life

Friday, July 15th, 2011

One of the most controversial topics in sports over the past week has been the selfless decision made by New York Yankee fan Christian Lopez. Lopez, 23, was the lucky guy who caught Derek Jeter’s 3,000th major league hit at Yankee Stadium this past weekend. While Jeter’s hit might go down as one of the most memorable moments in Yankee history, it is the act of Lopez that should, and hopefully will, forever be remembered.

Christian Lopez

The value of the baseball that Lopez caught is worth upwards of $300,000 as projected by baseball experts. But instead of holding the ball ransom like I’m positive a lot of others would, Lopez did the right thing and returned the ball to its rightful owner, Mr. Jeter. In exchange for his kind act, the Yankees offered Lopez loads of memorabilia and tickets in exchange for the new piece of history, which he graciously accepted. The controversy lies in the aftermath of receiving these gifts. According to accountants contacted by the New York Daily News, Lopez could be taxed anywhere from $5,000 to $14,000 for the items he received.

What a shame that would be. What happened to a world where people were rewarded for doing the right thing, instead of acting out of greed? Thank goodness that others feel the same way I do. Miller High Life issued a statement Wednesday saying that the company would pay for all of Lopez’s tax bill if he were to receive one. "Miller High Life believes you should be rewarded for doing the right thing, not penalized," brand manager Brendan Noonan said in a statement. "We want to recognize Christian Lopez, and in turn everyone like him, for doing the common sense thing and help him continue to live the High Life." Cheers to doing the right thing and rewarding those who do so! That’s living the High Life.

Buffalo: A Gordon Biersch is Headed Our Way

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Thanks to my Twitter pal @Murocker, I’ve learned that the Queen City (specifically, the Walden Galleria) will soon be home to a Gordon Biersch. The 8000-square-foot brew pub-style chain restaurant is slated to open in October and touts "from scratch" American cuisine paired with "brewed-in-house" beers.

Gordon Biersch

According to their website, Gordon Biersch brews mostly German-style lagers that are "proudly brewed in house with the intention of providing you with the highest quality, freshest beer possible. While we may not have 100 taps of kegged beer, or the latest fruit infused ale, we can guarantee one thing – beer like it ought to be!"

I, personally, don’t know much about the chain but @Murocker seems rather pumped. As far as I’m concerned, any chance for newbies to join in the craft beer revolution, even via chain restaurant brew pub, is a good thing to me.

SABMiller to Use Less Water in Their Beer

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Just happened upon this article from reuters.com stating that macrobrewer SABMiller is slowly cutting the amount of water they use to make their beer.

There’s a joke in here somewhere.

Ok, ok, beer snobbery and distaste for many of the watered-down SABMiller offerings aside, the big brewer is actually attempting to do a good thing here. In a word? Sustainability.

SABMiller Coors Light Production Line

As SABMiller states, "The scarcity and availability of water represent a potentially significant risk to parts of our business, as well as to some of the communities in which we operate."

Their goal to reduce consumption of water is a rather formidable one. By 2015, SABMiller shoots to cut water consumption 25% below that used in 2008. So far they’ve already cut water by 8%. After researching water footprints in places they operate that fall under high risk for water stress, they found some differing results: in Peru, SABMiller uses 61 liters of water to make just 1 liter of beer and in Tanzania, a staggering 180 liters of water is used to brew just 1 liter of beer.

It probably goes without saying that the water overconsumption risk has become one of SABMiller’s 10 sustainability priorities. Those priorities, in order, are:

1. Discouraging irresponsible and/or binge drinking

2. Using less water while making more beer

3. Reducing energy and their carbon footprint overall

4. Reusing and recycling packaging materials

5. Efforts toward zero-waste operations

6. Encouraging enterprise development

7. Benefiting communities

8. Contributing to the fight against HIV/AIDS

9. Human rights

10. Transparency and ethics

Sounds like SABMiller has quite a bit on their plate over the next ten years and beyond. We wish the big brewer the best of luck in hitting and even exceeding these ambitious goals and hope that other macrobrewers might take steps in the same direction.

A Guide to Pairing Sour Beer and Food

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Oftentimes for me, there’s nothing more thirst quenching than a mouth-puckering beer in the summertime. Perhaps it goes back to the lemonade stands of my childhood or wheelchair rides with Daddy to the candy store for a box of Lemonheads. Whatever it is, it’s ingrained in me and has been for some time.

Brews like Gueuzes, Flemish Browns/Reds, unblended Lambics and the like oftentimes have a vinegar-esque aroma and an amazing tartness that can really overpower foods if you don’t choose well. If you take anything from this post when pairing a sour beer with food, make sure you choose dishes and flavors that can hold their own.

Some of the foods and dishes I personally recommend to pair with sour beers are:

  • Tangy, stinky cheeses like bleu and goat cheese, especially with fresh fruit
  • Mussels and other seafoods with a squirt of fresh lemon and/or drawn butter
  • Omelets and other egg dishes with creamy sauces or vibrant cheeses
  • Cured pork and other salty meats

If you have other food pairing suggestions for sour beers, I’m all ears! Please pass them along in the comments section.

Cheers!

A Classified Site Just for Brewers

Monday, July 11th, 2011

There’s a new classified website out there called Primary Fermenter and it’s been exclusively designed for homebrewers and winemakers.

Primary Fermenter

Much like the popular (and sometimes sketchy) site Craigslist, it’s free to post. The ads run nationwide for 30 days at time but you can repost them as many times as you’d like.

We’ve found everything from hops and wine grape vines to homebrew bottles, carboys and brew stands. They’re just getting started so there aren’t a ton of listings just yet but we love the idea. If you’re selling or looking to buy brewing equipment, it may be worth checking out and/or spreading the word.
