Fall, Football and Harvest Ale

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Today marks the first day of my favorite time of the year: football season! I can barely contain myself. As of this moment whilst typing, I have but 12 hours to wait until the season officially begins. I swear I’m going to tackle anyone who even thinks about walking into my office. Consider yourself warned.

The past few days, I’ve been considering which beer to enjoy for the season opener. I wanted something autumn-oriented but not super malty, like an Oktoberfest, with an ABV that hovers between 5 and 7%. After much contemplation, I believe I’ve found the perfect fit – Southern Tier Harvest Ale.

Southern Tier Harvest Ale

Harvest Ale is a celebration of the fall season and the sowing of hops and barley that Southern Tier will use in future brews. One of my favorite styles, this Extra Special Bitter (ESB) takes its hops aspect to a whole new level. Not only does Southern Tier add fresh English hops to the brew, but they also dry hop after fermentation for even more kick. Despite all this, don’t go thinking it’s just a hop bomb. Harvest Ale is balanced by fresh, malted barley for an experience perfectly akin to the season.

Now you know what I’ll be enjoying this evening for kickoff. How about you? What’s in your glass tonight?

Thyme for Fall: A Cocktail Recipe

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Bittermans Xocolatl Mole BittersUpon waking this morning I was greeted with my first cool, crisp gulp of air of the coming season. I pulled on a pair of skinny jeans, my new fall boots, a cozy wrap sweater and thought to myself; "Self, it’s about time for an autumn cocktail." Lo and behold, I happened upon this one at the calgaryherald.com just this morning and absolutely had to share. You’re welcome.

As Thyme Goes By
2 oz single malt scotch
¾ oz Clement Creole Shrubb
½ oz Benedictine liqueur
1/3 oz simple syrup
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
3 dashes Bittermans Xocolatl Mole Bitters
Ginger beer, to taste
Sprig of thyme, for garnish

Add all ingredients, except ginger beer, to an empty cocktail shaker. Dry shake first, then add ice and shake well for about 15 seconds. Double strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a sprig of thyme.

The Bitter Truth Behind Berg & Hauck’s Cocktail Bitters

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Stephen Berg and Alexander Hauck are the former Munich bartenders behind the company The Bitter Truth in Germany.

Berg and Haucks Cocktail Bitters

Over the years we’ve had tons of requests for their products and we wanted more than anything to carry them but some legal complications made that impossible. Their bitters were considered a spirit; not a flavoring (food). For this reason, they could only be sold via distributors or stores with retail liquor permits.

Similarly, some liquor stores are not able to sell bitters brands like Fee Brothers because it’s considered food and they’d need different approvals and licenses.

Mr. Berg & Mr. Hauck didn’t want to keep their delicious concoctions from the US market any longer so they’ve created a brand separate from The Bitter Truth called Berg & Hauck. The bitters are the same delicious flavors, there’s just a little name and registration change involved in getting them to you. They’re registered in the United States as NON-POTABLE so places like KegWorks can sell them.

This friends, is the Bitter Truth. Rejoice and try one of these delicious flavors:

Berg & Hauck’s Old Time Aromatic Cocktail Bitters

Berg & Hauck’s Orange Bitters

Berg & Hauck’s Jerry Thomas Bitters

Berg & Hauck’s Creole Bitters

Berg & Hauck’s Lemon Bitters

Berg & Hauck’s Original Celery Bitters

What’s Brewing For Labor Day

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

There’s a good chance you’ll be grilling up some delicious food this weekend, in celebration of Labor Day. While the meal is ultra important (a person’s gotta eat, right?) the question on everyone’s mind is with which beers will you be washing down all that grilled grub?

It’s ok if you haven’t yet put any thought into this. That’s where I come in. Here’s a few surefire beers to perfectly pair with your menu and keep you happily hydrated all day long.

Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast
Start your Labor Day celebration off right with this creamy, tongue-coating Imperial Stout. Touting flavors of chocolate, coffee and bacon (oh yah, that’s right) there’s no better way to kick off your day off. Enjoy it alongside anything and everything involving bacon.

Victory HopDevil Ale
After you’ve enjoyed the heavy-bodied, malty Beer Geek Breakfast, you may be thirsting for something a bit more bitter. This medium-bodied ale gives your palate a swift kick of hops, balanced by a caramel-sweet malt backbone. Sip on HopDevil while munching on gorgonzola-topped apple slices or crackers and you’re golden.

La Chouffe
Snacking on shrimp cocktail before grilling? This Belgian Strong Golden Ale is the perfect accompaniment. Sweetness from the Belgian yeast pairs perfectly with the shrimp’s inherent sweetness, while the bitter, floral hops stands strong against the cocktail sauce. I highly recommend this combination.

Smuttynose Robust Porter
This smoky, balanced porter is a wondrous beer to pair with just about anything you toss onto a grill. Chocolate sweetness is offset by coffee and hops bitterness, making Smuttynose Robust Porter an ideal match to barbecue, burgers and steaks.

Got some other choice items on your Labor Day menu? We’d love to hear what you’ve got planned and we’d be happy to help you choose the perfect beers.
