New Years Eve Safety Precautions

Choose to party your ass off and get home safely this New Year’s Eve.

Start the New Year off right by calling AAA’s Tipsy Tow Program* if you’ve been drinking this New Year’s Eve. They’ll pick up you and your friends (as long as there’s room), they’ll even tow your vehicle home. The best part is, this service is available to AAA members and NON-members alike – and it’s absolutely $Free!

Check local AAA participation or call the AAA Tipsy Tow phone number at 1-800-222-4357 (1-800-AAA-Help)

*For those of you in Western New York, AAA Western & Central New York does not currently offer the AAA Tipsy Tow program. If you need a ride, please contact Designated Drivers of Buffalo: Telephone: (716) 713-7703 / Visit: www.DDOBNY.com

Why Your New Year’s Resolution Sucks

Friday, December 30th, 2011

It’s that time of year again. By now, you’ve probably wolfed down more than your fair share of turkey and stuffing or latkes and pontshkes. You’ve probably also given-in to the siren song of a hundred sugary, chocolaty indulgences only to later feel the gastrointestinal sting of regret. Depending on your merry-making, you’ve also probably swigged or slammed your way to the bottom of one-too-many glasses (or bottles) of liquid holiday cheer, too.

So, here we are: the last week of the year. The home stretch. Get through New Year’s and you’re home free, right? After New Year’s, you’re going to straighten up and fly right. From this point forward, you’re going to eat more sensibly, cut back (a little!) on the drinking, quit smoking, and get those backburner projects done.

Just like that?

You and I are old enough and wise enough to know how those plans typically play out: The clock strikes 12, you go on your diet, you get your nicotine patch – or do whatever it is you’ve promised yourself to do, then BLAM! a few weeks or months later, you’ve actually gained weight, your New Year’s Eve face-in-the-toilet pleas to higher powers is somehow forgotten history, and the next thing you know, you’re sitting on your duff feeling fat, guilty, and overly drunk as you light yet another cigarette.

Sound familiar?

The problem isn’t whether or not you’re willing or committed enough to make a change in those things you’d like to see changed, it’s that we pressure ourselves and others to do it RIGHT NOW in this last week of the year – with little or no real planning. We force ourselves to conjure these last minute promises to ourselves, to even pick up past torches and blindly commit.

I can’t speak for you, but after the insanity of holiday shopping, the relentless gift wrapping, the pressured commitments to parties and gatherings (not to mention all the unnecessary eating and drinking), the last thing I really want or need is the added stress of throwing my life, my habits into a 180 degree turn that’s likely to become a spiral of failure and self-loathing.

Making dramatic changes in habit takes thought and effort because when we talk about resolving to do something for ourselves, what we’re really talking about is changing our pattern of behavior – behavior we’ve exhibited all our lives. In a very real sense, we’re resolving to make life altering changes and, as such, those things require careful thought and planning. So, what to do about this whole tradition of having a New Year’s Resolution?

If you feel you absolutely, positively must resolve to do something for this coming year, I urge you to truly consider when and how you will begin to implement those changes you seek for yourself. Set a realistic goal, set a reasonable date for any time during the year, mark it on a calendar, and begin preparations. Do your research, work new habits into your life slowly, and boil everything down to an action that you can do each day.

That in mind, you’ve just given yourself permission to celebrate and enjoy this coming New Year’s Eve and you’ve given yourself a way to make a change for the better. If all goes according to your well-thought plan for the near future, you’ll find your feet firmly planted on the path to success.

Happy New Year’s and Good Luck!

A Taste of French Toast & Corporate Culture

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

This isn’t going to be your typical KegWorks blog post but I think it’s important, so I’m going to write it. It’s going to have a little bit of bragging, a little bit of insight, and one big, valid point. I’ll divulge that point now; having a positive, enjoyable corporate culture can make your company more successful.

Yesterday my colleagues and I were treated to breakfast for lunch. We placed our orders from our desks and the food was delivered to us when it was ready. Sometimes I honestly feel like we work at the suburban Buffalo version of the Googleplex.

John Preparing Breakfast for Lunch

Lucky for us our outstanding, multitalented IT Director happens to have a serious passion for cooking and the small catering business to prove it. He prepared this particular meal but it’s not the first time we’ve been spoiled and it certainly won’t be the last.

No one wants to work the week between Christmas and New Years but here at KegWorks, it’s very important that we do. There are orders being placed, people calling with questions, gifts to be returned and lots of year-end things to do. Sure, there are moments I wish I were lounging around at home in my pajamas like everyone else but I can’t deny that being at work isn’t so bad when there’s someone delivering sausage, French toast, and a made-to-order omelet to your desk come lunchtime. Free beer isn’t the only perk we enjoy.

Brick Oven Pizza Truck

We’ve had several lunches provided from local restaurants and food trucks, we’ve zoomed around the parking lot on Segways, we’ve enjoyed fine champagnes (including Dom Perignon) in our conference room, we were given iPad 2s as a part of our bonus last year, our hire-date anniversaries are recognized and acknowledged, and we’re all well-respected, appreciated, and valued every single day. I’m not just talking managers and high-level staff – I mean it when I say every single one of us.

Riding on Segways

I don’t think it is a coincidence that turnover is ridiculously low and we’re the 13th fastest growing company in our region. When you believe in what you do and the people you’re doing it with, you enjoy your job. When you like being at work, you spend more time at work – and more time at work means more work being done. I never hesitate to go the extra mile because I feel lucky to work for a company like this and I know that my teammates feel the same way.

This office functions like a family. When one of our warehouse employees got sick and tragically passed away two years ago, KegWorks helped his wife, almost every single employee attended his funeral (on a weekend mind you) and there is a tree in his memory planted in front of our office. The owner and our CEO care about us and they treat us like people; that in and of itself makes all of the difference. The environment we work in causes us care about the company, the work that we do, and one another. That kind of atmosphere is inspiring and inspired people can’t help but to do more inspiring things.

So, there you have it. My gushing is done, as I believe I’ve made my point. French Toast is delicious and having breakfast for lunch can make all of the difference.

Note: No one asked me to write this, I really do enjoy my job this much.

After chowing down heavy pies and frosted cookies through the holidays, dessert on New Years Eve might not sound too appealing. Try tickling your sweet tooth with a sugary shot instead! This vanilla cream chocolate shooter will totally hit the spot. Chocolate, caramel, vanilla and amaretto flavored liqueurs swirling into an edible chocolate shot glass? Pass me another, please.

Hannah’s Top 3 Toasting Beers for New Years Eve

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

If you’re a beer lover like me, you may be looking to forgo the conventional Champagne toast and choose instead a brew worthy of ringing in the New Year. It doesn’t have to be advertised to be a replacement for the standard bubbly, in fact many of those beers will have jacked-up prices this time of year. I’d recommend steering clear of the usual suspects (think Sam Adams Infinium) and toasting with one (or all) of these fine brews instead:

Orval Trappist Ale

1. Dogfish Head Festina Peche
Its light, effervescent, many-bubbled mouthfeel alone make it a perfect New Years toasting beer. Add in its mouthwatering peach aroma, surprisingly tart peach/sour apple taste and doughy malt finish, you’ve got a real winner on your hands. This, my friends, is my top pick for New Years Eve.

2. Orval Trappist Ale
Pineapple is the star is this Belgian ale, both in aroma and taste, marked with Champagne-like carbonation for the bubbles you crave in a New Years toast. Funky brett, a touch of spice, a dry, tart finish and loads of voluptuous head make Orval Trappist Ale one of my favorite brews and my second choice to ring in the New Year.

3. Oude Lambiek De Cam
I haven’t yet written up a review for this yet, but it still slides in at number three. This unblended lambic is perfectly sour with a lovely barnyard funk (if you’re into that kind of thing) and dry finish, making it a great toasting beer for those of you out there who dig something a little different. Enjoy no-holds-barred sour fruit aroma and flavor, with that funky lacto to boot.

A Home Bar to Be Envied

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Scott Battis of Salem, New Hampshire was kind enough to send us some photos of the Old Irish themed home bar and theater room that he built himself.

It’s obvious he’s put a lot of time and love into the project. We’re happy to report that he put a lot of KegWorks products into it as well… bar foot rails, a double tap kegerator, a beverage center, and more. The theater room is equipped with 126" screen and a pretty sweet audio system. We could go on and on about it but the pictures let the bar speak for itself.

If we’re ever in New Hampshire, we’ll have to stop by for a beer. It’s certainly the kind of bar we’d like to hang out in.

Nice work Scott, and thanks again for sharing the photos – you just might inspire someone out there to make their own dream a reality.
