It’s fairly easy to reach and connect with thousands of people, when you use something they’re already connected with to do it. That’s the approach Ommegang is taking with their latest series of beers to be themed after the HBO series Game of Thrones.

The critically acclaimed show is based off of a series of fantasy novels written by George R.R. Martin. Set in the fictional continents of Essos and Westeros, the show blends several different plot lines, one of which follows the members of different noble houses fighting for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. If you don’t watch the show, this probably sounds like a lot of jargon, but try to look past it, and know that this will be a killer beer regardless.

Mike McManus, Ommegang’s head brewer and Innovation Manager, says the beers will be made with the show intimately in mind, and the plan is to release a newly themed beer with each passing season. The first will be called "Iron Throne Blonde Ale," set to release mid-march in anticipation of the third season, premiering on March 31.

House of Lannister

They went with a Blonde Ale to represent the evil house of Lannister. Mike McManus spoke on the beer’s connection to the house of Lannister with the following statement: "We wanted something fair-colored that related to the fair-haired Lannister household. There’s also a certain amount of conniving and back-door dealing that they do. To relate to that, we used a traditional spice in Belgian beer called grains of paradise. We also used lemon peel to make the beer a bit tart."

Iron Throne has a 6.5% ABV and will be offered in 750ml bottles at $8.50 a piece.

I’m only left with one simple question. I want to ask officials at HBO and any wise whiskey distillers, when can we see some whiskey with a Boardwalk Empire twist?
