Dogfish Head and Bitches Brew

Sam Calagione and the boys at Dogfish Head are at it again (Surprise!). This time around they're brewing a special beer, to be released in August, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of one of Miles Davis's watershed albums, 1970's "Bitches Brew". Being a fan of most things Dogfish Head, and a HUGE Miles Davis fan, this is wonderful news, and yet another great example of how breweries are creating beers connected with a piece of pop culture. In some ways, this was a no-brainer.

Record companies are notorious these days for giving evergreen albums by a number of artists the repackaging/remastering/reissuing with extensive packaging, artwork, and additional tracks and outtakes that were "discovered" in the vaults and never heard before by the general public. If memory serves me, Bitches Brew has already gotten this treatment twice before, the last being in 2000 for the 30th Anniversary. Sometimes it can get ridiculous, but the collectors like myself usually get sucked in a lot of the time. Sam and Dogfish Head were actually contacted by Sony for this, which is a testimonial to the brewery's reputation, stature for creativity and their influence on the craft beer scene.

As you would expect, this beer is going to be anything but normal; Sam explains in the below video that it will be a threaded beer made from multiple primary fermentations, that will be blended together. The first thread will be a Tej, an African honey beer with gesho root for bittering. The other three threads will be imperial stouts with Madagascar sugar.

Sounds like it's gonna be a doozy; I'm almost as excited to see what the artwork will look like as I am to taste the beer. Cheers to Sam and Dogfish Head, keep doing what you're doing boys!
