The recipe for these pleasantly potent aromatic bitters was inspired by the preferred formula used by legendary 19th century barman Jerry Thomas (1830-1885). It is inspired by a recipe in the Jerry Thomas Bartender's Guide, written in 1862.
Cocktail bitters are spirits infused with flavors, typically from plants, fruits, or spices. They date as far back as the early 1800's, originally used to assist with digestion and cure stomach aches. Infusing your cocktail recipes with just a few drops of bitters will give them an additional level of flavor depth. Many bitters are also renowned for their ability to cure hangovers.
This quality recipe is produced by The Bitter Truth bitters brand. Berg & Hauck makes its Jerry Thomas bitters by macerating roots, seeds, barks, fruits, herbs and plants in an alcohol base. The resulting flavor profile is full of citrus, dried fruit, clove, angostura bark, and cinnamon.
