A Cocktail for Veteran’s Day

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of my dad, but on this Veteran’s Day, I’m thinking of him and his service to this great country as a US Marine, as well as all of you out there who have served in US armed forces.

Here’s a picture of Dad in his Dress Blues, taken around 1966.

My Dad in his Dress Blues

I’ve always known my dad to be quite the comedian, seldom without a smile on his face, so when I found this shot of him, while stationed in Puerto Rico, standing stoically to the left of two laughing friends, I could help but smirk.

Now, Dad loved a good beer, especially poolside or while watching football (guess I know where I get all of that from), but when he was celebrating something, his tastes went to the classic Dirty Martini. We could never keep enough olive juice in the fridge; we’d end up with jars of sad, dried up little olives that never made it into one of those martinis. I wish we’d have thought of picking up bottles of straight olive brine back then!

Thinking you might want to kick back with a celebratory Dirty Martini? Here’s a recipe that’ll do just the trick.

Dirty Martini

¼ oz olive brine
2 dashes orange bitters
2 oz gin (or vodka, if you prefer)
½ oz dry vermouth
Olives, for garnish

Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, until condensation forms on the outside of the shaker. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with olives and enjoy.

Happy Veteran’s Day to all who served – that means you too, John and Ed. And Dad – thinking of you especially.
