An Unbiased First Taste of Bud Light Platinum

Anheuser-Busch isn’t set to release Bud Light Platinum (its new higher-alcohol beer) to the nation until January 30th but we were able to pull a few strings and score six of these highly publicized, hyped up brews a couple of weeks early. We’re not going to reveal our source, so don’t bother asking how we got them. Bud Light Platinum - Blind Taste Test It’s no secret that we have ties to the craft beer industry. It doesn’t take long to figure out that craft beer lovers love to hate macro brews. In fact, it often seems that despising “the big guys” is just as important to the culture as drinking good beer. All of the industry rumors seem to identify Bud Light Platinum as a desperate attempt to appeal to craft beer drinkers. Will anything they ever make appeal to indie drinkers? We’re not sure it’s possible. However, in an effort to be fair, we wanted to give A-B’s most recent effort a real chance. We put together a two-person tasting panel consisting of the most refined palates in our office. We also managed to keep the identity of the new brew a secret. We really wanted to know how they’d feel about Bud Light Platinum’s taste, without allowing the beer’s name or origin to skew their opinion. Anheuser-Busch describes Bud Light Platinum as having a slightly sweeter taste and more alcohol than Bud Light. According to their third-quarter earnings report, the beer is “a trendy blue-bottle line extension that appeals to a key group of beer drinkers and expands consumer occasions.” Here’s a “by the numbers” comparision:

  Bud Light Bud Light Platinum
Alcohol by Volume 4.2% 6%
Calories 110 137

Check out what happened when Pete and Justin tasted Platinum for the first time (without knowing it):

After everyone else in the office got to try a sample, we’ve determined that this upcoming Super Bowl commercial star is drinkable and it does have more of a flavor profile than the Buds that have come before it. Loyal macro drinkers and college kids will probably buy into it but if the folks at Anheuser-Busch are aiming to lure part of the craft market back, this beer probably isn’t going to do it. Then again, as we touched on before, it’s unlikely any beer could. The blue bottles and packaging kind of remind us of Zima. There is no vortex mouth, the glass is blue regardless of the temperature of the beer inside and we can’t really say whether it’s been triple hopped or not but we can say that the 6% ABV is definitely its selling point. The higher alcohol content is plastered all over the bottles and packaging like a badge of honor. Whether you’re a loyal Bud drinker or a total craft beer snob, we urge you to give it a try and formulate your own opinions before you make any judgements. Every beer is worth at least one try, right? We recognize that some of you are opposed to drinking any beer produced by Anheuser-Busch, based solely on principle. We respect that, we just ask that you try not to get too ridiculously preachy in the comments. [techtags:BUD LIGHT PLATINUM, BEER REVIEW, TASTE TEST]

I agree it’s a nice beer. One of the better buds. Select was better but I think too much calories so they don’t make it now. That was easy enough.. pheeew!! Lol sorry about all the idiots but this is the Internet. You people are everywhere

  • rocky rivers May 1, 2012 @ 8:57pm

How can the product be “light”? It’s high in calories (a whopping 137 calories, just like a regular beer) and high in alcohol (6%). This is misleading the consumers!!!!

  • crankyanke July 19, 2012 @ 7:12pm

Like taste but DO NOT like blue bottle———–reminds me of Phillip’s Magnesia

    • Bottle shouldn't matter why complain September 9, 2017 @ 1:10am

My wife and I actually really like this beer. We enjoy the sweetness of it and it really has a nice kick with the 6%. I felt it was flavorful for a lighter beer. If I can have one single beer on an empty stomach and get a nice beer buzz that with a nice smooth taste than I feel like its worth the buck. Other beers at 3% just don’t have it goin on…

Now many of you consider yourselves to be beer tasting pro’s and thats fine but as just a regular joe I have to say really good flavor, great buzz and the packaging is pretty bitchen. In fact I was trying to think of artwork I could make with these bottles as it seem a shame to throw out pretty deep cobalt blue glass like this. I saw where someone was cutting and polishing the rims to make beer glasses… NOW THATS BITCHEN!

    Good job Bud!

Now that’s the best, honest, down to earth, comment made . Thanks!

  • Donna Wolak April 16, 2016 @ 4:00pm

Love it my husband and I drink it all time. Wish restaurant carred it they bud light not premium

  • Thomas G October 19, 2016 @ 4:03pm

Haven’t had a Bud in years (many years) but this summer at the Jersey shore the happy hour at my hotel had Bud light specials, they were ice cold and not bad. After coming home and a couple months later I saw the “Bud light Platinum” oh well the ones at the shore were good, and I only wanted a few and wow, took the edge off quick and was also refreshing, clean and crisp too. Not a big beer drinker like back in the day but when I want a few now it’ll be BLP, (best little pal) lol.

  • Joseph Tucker December 29, 2016 @ 10:06pm

I have never liked any budwiser,I drank Rolling Rock when the platinum came out I tried a few and enjoyed the taste it has a complete different taste than the regular budwiser, now I don’t see myself drinking any other beer except the platinum

  • Dave March 18, 2017 @ 5:32pm

I went looking for something different.. I seen the blue bottle and it caught my attention . After seeing the alcohol content i decided to give it a try. As an avid craft beer drinker and disliking inbev, I have to admit it was pleasantly surprised and hate to say that yes like it and would purchase it again.

  • Prem May 24, 2017 @ 1:47am

    I need this beer ?

  • William Shaw May 26, 2017 @ 3:39pm

Love it love it love it !! Was a faithful labbatt blue light drinker forever… one taste of platinum and it was over. Can’t even stand the taste of blue light anymore. Been a loyal bud boy for a few years now. Of course now that I’ve finally found a beer that tastes great with anything, I’m having increasing difficulty finding it. Go figure. Hopefully they aren’t discontinuing it. I’d almost have to quit drinking…

  • Mike June 5, 2017 @ 11:38pm

I’m buying for the bottles, they will make great points for knapping arrowheads…

  • Eduardo E Quintana June 12, 2017 @ 11:23pm

bought it by mistake, thought I was buying bud light in the aluminum bottle. I have starting drinking light after have a preference for imports. Really like the buds and will continue to be my go to beer.

  • gonzo June 16, 2017 @ 7:59pm

Without a doubt the best beer I have tasted over the counter in 60 years I want to thank you Anheuser-Busch great

  • Captain America July 6, 2017 @ 1:39am

Too sweet and not hoppy enough. The ABV is the reason for this purchase. One good thing, it doesn’t taste like soap like regular Bud & lite, so, slight improvement. I wish good beer makers would start using the aluminum bottles. For some reason, they seem to stay cold longer.

  • Jeannie Smith July 19, 2017 @ 2:27am

I like the blue bottles. Can you try making the other beer in aluminum bottles and tasting less soapy please? A taste improvement over the whole line with the exception of the platinum beer may do some good! otherwiseBudweiser is pretty good.
    In kindest Regards,

  • Steve Smith July 19, 2017 @ 2:41am

Yeah, why does your all’ s beer taste kind of soapy?
The Platinum beer tastes good compared to the rest, but it isn’t Light.

  • Martain July 24, 2017 @ 10:42am

It’s just too sweet tasting to me. It has kinda a bile like sweetness. I’m sure other folks have different taste buds but to me it felt a little like choking down vomit with some malt and carbonation mixed into it. I poured it out. I just can’t do it.

  • Mark Grooms October 21, 2017 @ 10:13pm

I like the other people that have made their positive comments on his beer were drunk from draft beer and a first place! This is one of the worst aluminum tasting beers I’ve ever had totally disappointed in Bud Light sorry been drinking it for years drink being Bud for years, but this beer totally sucks ass sorry for not being politically correct I voted for Trump!

  • John Wynne October 26, 2017 @ 8:48pm

This is really the ONLY beer my wife and I like to drink. I’ve been a beer drinker for over 50 years and have tasted all of the classics. I stopped drinking bear regularly for some time now but this Platinum Light has brought me back. I love it! To me it has a clear and non-bitter sparkling taste with no bear aftertaste. I also like that, for some reason, it does not give me that beer headache like the majority of beers, especially those craft beers! Perhaps the extra hops, etc have been fermented out in the process to get the extra alcohol content or something. The fact that it’s 6 percent makes it a big overall winner. Hope Budweiser keeps this one!

  • Rick toles November 25, 2017 @ 9:45pm

I bought bud lite got home opened one and took a sip.
Wow,not only did it taste great the bottle is cobalt blue.
It is still hard to find.?

    • Chris April 3, 2019 @ 4:23pm

      Hey Rick,

It’s a lot easier to find these days! Should be at a variety of local stores.

  • Tim December 8, 2017 @ 12:01am

I gotta say. This beer is pretty good. I have usually avoided a/b beers, but decided to give it a shot. It’s been my go to beer for quite a while now. I’m not really a fan of ipas, way too hoppy. So this suits my taste., slightly sweet. Have a couple before dinner, you can really feel a nice little buzz!

  • Scott March 14, 2018 @ 7:35am

Tried it, love it. Is my go to beer.

  • Mark April 21, 2018 @ 3:21pm

I found 2 Bud Light Platinum mixed in with my case of Bud Light? Just wondering why?

  • Joyce santo June 3, 2018 @ 12:15am

Best light beer i have ever drank. The 6% is a perk.

  • Brian sole October 13, 2018 @ 4:58pm

I hear alot about the blue bottle, but the can is silver.maybe the calories are more but when tried it i loved it and the alchol content made me drink less than regular bud light.i love the taste of it …
