I’ve been a big fan of the cocktail writing of David Wondrich for a long time and became a bigger fan after seeing him speak in person a few times at last year’s Tales of the Cocktail. He writes about his own personal drinking rules he’s developed over the years that has helped him remain “employed, housed and married”. As someone who’s been in the alcohol business for a long time, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your own set of rules. These guidelines are what separate the pros from the rookies / amateurs. You’ve seen the rookies before…don’t be one.

I would also add making sure you have a favorite cabby on your cell phone speed dial, in case you lose track (and you will occasionally) of your own rule book.
