Falernum: A Syrup That Screams Summer

Once forgotten Falernum is happily getting some buzz, not only because of the Tiki cocktail revival, but also because it’s, quite possibly, the quintessential summer mixer. Featuring flavors of lime, almond and ginger, I can’t think of a more perfect syrup for your hot weather rum drinks.

Here’s a perfect cocktail to get you started with Falernum. I recommend it poolside, while you’re porching it or anytime you desire a taste of the tropics.

Calypso
2 oz gold rum
1 tsp falernum
1 oz pineapple juice
½ oz fresh lemon juice
Dash (or more, to taste) Angostura bitters
Nutmeg, for garnish

Add all ingredients, except nutmeg, to a cocktail shaker. Fill halfway with ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
