It all started out as an epic April Fools’ joke, crafted and executed by Denver’s Wynkoop Brewing Co. this past spring. Rocky Mountain Oysters, or fried bulls balls, are a fairly common dish in Colorado, but never before have they been featured in a brew. Until now, that is.
The video (seen below) was part of the original April Fools’ hoax, and as you can imagine, it sparked a lot of reactions from beer lovers, writers, and brewers alike. Most of the feedback was positive, and it wasn’t just people commenting on the funny factor. A lot of people said they wished it were true.
So Wynkoop’s head brewer Andy Brown got a little ballsy and made this prank plausible.
You might be wondering what it tastes like. In the original video, a Wynkoop employee states that “the result of our efforts is a luscious, creamy stout that delivers loads of flavor — everything from roasted barley and coffee, to chocolate and nuts.” Oh, the puns.
In a blog post that was publishd on Monday, Wynkoop wrote that the beer “is an assertive foreign-style stout, slightly viscous, with a deep brown color. It has equally deep flavors of chocolate syrup, Kahlua, and espresso, along with a palpable level of alcohol and a savory umami-like note. It finishes dry and roasted with a fast-fading hop bite. The beer is 7% ABV and has 3 BPBs. That’s 3 balls per barrel.”
The beer will be available at the brewery in Denver next Monday, and will also be featured at their table at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver next weekend (Oct. 11-13). A few of my colleagues will be there, and I’ll definitely be asking them to give it a try.
